College football playoff
I've been arguing for 6 autobids for a long time but not guaranteeing 5 to the p5 instead going 6 highest ranked conference champs. It looks like that's the direction we're heading. That's awesome.

RE: College football playoff
That is great news...of course that obviously means the P5 plus one for most years, but I'd argue the AAC and Pac 12 are perceptually identical to most voters now.

The biggest thing to note here is that the committee recommending this is comprised of the SEC commissioner and Notre Dame AD. Those two guys have a massive amount of influence in CFB and if this is their recommendation I'd be surprised if it doesn't move forward. B12 and MWC commissioner on it as well.

There's really no underselling how massive this would be for us. Easily the next best thing to getting a P5 bid. Further cements UC as a better job than many P5 mid tier programs.

RE: College football playoff
This arguably makes our path to the playoff, and our ability to recruit using that rhetoric, better than the likes of Kentucky, Purdue, Indiana, Pitt, Illinois, etc. By nature of being in one of the 6 top conferences, if we win it, we would more than likely be in the Top 6 conferences listed...everyone and their brothers know that the teams I listed have a less than zero chance of winning their conference, which would mean they're competing for 1 of 6 at large spots with EVERY team in America.

RE: College football playoff
This is about the best possible outcome for the Cincinnati football program and the AAC. Cincinnati now can become a destination job because there is a clear path to a national chip. At least access to the CFP will not be a barrier for a head coach to stay for an extended period. Let's be honest though, the driving force behind this is $$$$$$$$$$ for all parties involved. Can you imagine the fan interest and ratings for a true playoff format in college football? Advertisers and sponsors, start your engines...

Quote:A College Football Playoff working group Thursday formally recommended expanding the four-team field to 12 teams.

That 12-team model would invite the top six conference champions and six at-large teams into the field. There would be no limit on the number of selections from a conference, and no conference would receive an automatic bid.

In this format, the top four conference champions would get byes in the first round and the other eight teams would compete in first-round games on the campuses of the teams ranked Nos. 5-8. Those games would take place in the two weeks following conference championship weekend.

The quarterfinals would be played at bowl sites (games not specified), taking place on Jan. 1 (or Jan. 2 when New Year's Day falls on a Sunday) and an adjacent day. It has not yet been determined when semifinals and the national championship would be played, but the working group suggests the semifinals not be played as a doubleheader like presently constituted.

The playoff bracket would not take regular-season rematches into account when the teams are ranked, and there would not be reseeding in the quarterfinal or semifinal round.

The working group's recommendation will be discussed and vetted next week at a previously scheduled CFP Management Committee meeting on June 17-18. The committee is made up of the 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick. If approved, it would be forwarded to the CFP Board of Managers, which are holding a meeting on June 22. That group is comprised of presidents and chancellors representing the 10 FBS conferences along with Notre Dame president Rev. John I. Jenkins.

From there, if the board determines that it wants to move forward with the 12-team model (or another model it prefers), it will "authorize feasibility assessments and potentially discussions with other entities that would allow for implementation of any altered format." The board would then meet a second time in September to review results of the studies and potentially make a decision.

There are five years remaining on the current CFP contract with ESPN. It is unknown when Thursday's recommendation, if formally approved, would go into effect.

Finally There Is A Real Chance!

I absolutely hate how Notre Dame has institutional representation when no other University in the country does...that is so ridiculous.

RE: College football playoff
I'm coming around pretty quickly to really liking this scenario. I generally don't like the idea of byes - I mean do the elites (Alabama, OSU etc.) really need MORE advantages? But the alternative is sending the bottom 2-4 seeds of whatever number makes the playoffs straight to the slaughter 90% of the time. I like the idea that at 12 each of them at least has a reasonable shot to make their mark on the big stage.

And for UC specifically it's a fairly cozy position to play for and recruit to. As long as the AAC remains very solid or improves, we're probably an auto bid if we're undefeated and a at-large if somehow we aren't. Heck we may even get an auto bid with one loss or at least a VERY solid shot at an at large. It may even be possible to get an at large bid with 2 losses especially if one was to a big time P5 program on the road. I can easily foresee there being room for 2 or maybe even 3 G5 teams depending how things shake out in a given year so we don't necessarily have to fear a BYU putting it altogether or a row-the-boat WMU catching lightning in a bottle ruining our chances.

Of course I say all of that in the given landscape which isn't necessarily going to last all that long and with the major caveat that we haven't even heard about how the money will be handled. But for now, I'm liking it a lot.

RE: College football playoff
Here is a good explanation why the 12 team playoff became the proposal:

https://sports.yahoo.com/college-footbal...ZBt94PJA2U

Basically the P5 would lose at large bids going to 8 assuming 5 or 6 are reserved for conference champions and the best of the G5. Currently 4 at large; drop to 2 or 3 at large. And a guarantee of a G5 representative in the 12 format brings along the G5 schools.

Well at this point I'm in favor of anything that's not the Alabama, Clemson, Ohio St. and a guest star annual tournament.

If this goes through, as I read it, gives us the best chance to keep Fickell around for a while.

The SEC is in favor this? So if the SEC's champ is ranked #1 in the country and the SEC runner-up is ranked #3 in the country, that #3 team won't make the playoff?

Of course that scenario could happen to any P5 conference but its just way more likely to happen the SEC these days.

And the 6th best conference champ has a ranking of #15, they get in?

If this happens I'll be blow away. I can't believe some of the P5 conferences would agree to this.

Agreed. I don’t even like that scenario. That would be unfair. We’re trying to make things more fair for us and we should want the same for everybody.

Seems like Some type of objective computer rankings weighing The most with a small portion of weight coming from a diverse committee would be great! There may be holes in that Approach though because I haven’t studied it like some of you guys.

the NCAA BASKETBALL tournament set up is much more fair.

Edit - Sounds like they’re looking at 12 teams. Which is much more fair.

College football playoff
I continue to be shocked that this appears to be the direction things are heading. It almost makes too much sense for CFB. Feels like a sport that I had dying interest in is finally back from the brink. This next season is gonna be a blast even without the expansion.

Good call, Mark. It made sense to me, but no way I thought they would ever go with it. I'm nervous. It's almost like they are being too generous.

Trust me, it is not generosity.

Notre Dame likes it because they are unlikely to crack the Top Four very often.

The SEC likes it because they expect to grab at least three of those six at large bids.

The PAC likes it because it is about the only way they will ever sniff the playoffs.

The P5 like giving the G5 one guaranteed spot because now it is only 1 out of 12, the television people will get their Cinderella story every year, and they just got any politicians off their back.

They all like it because they expect to see a serious rise in network money out of the deal.

The only people who won't like it are the bowl people, but they have been slowly becoming less relevant the last decade or so.
