With the expanded playoff, I could realistically see Fickell's process playing out like this over time (including previous seasons to show the progress):

2017: Rebuild the culture from the Tuberville dumpster fire and begin recruiting the right guys.

2018: Vastly improved team that won 11 games and a bowl game. Recruiting in Ohio has been established.

2019: Make it to the conference championship game. Even better recruiting. Another P5 bowl victory.

2020: Win the conference championship game and make the NY6 bowl. Best recruiting class ever.

2021: Win conference again and either win NY6 bowl or make the CFP. Another strong recruiting class.

2022: Build off 2021 momentum in recruiting and start inching recruiting rankings towards the top 25. Win another conference championship, or have a 10-win season worst-case after losing a lot of upperclassmen, but having young guys ready to step in.

2023: Win the conference and make the first 12-team CFP. Recruiting continues to trend upwards.

2024: Make the CFP again and win a game. Secure first top-25 recruiting class in school history.

2025 and beyond: Multiple top 25 recruiting classes and CFP appearances. Eventually, we have the depth of talent where a special QB could take us to the CFP semifinals. Do that, and recruiting trends upwards again. Rinse and repeat...

I think 2022 is a going to be a rough one for us with all of the losses we're going to sustain. I could see it being more of an 8-5/9-4 season truthfully, although, the schedule does seem tasty in the OOC (Indiana at home and a VERY winnable game at Arkansas).

Yeah, if there's going to be a step back, it will be in 2022. That said, 2020 and 2021 are the highest-rated recruiting classes we've ever had. If a lot of those guys are ready to contribute, I don't think we'll fall off too much. Of course, the development of Evan Prater will be a huge factor as well.

Agreed...everything I heard about Prater last year doesn't make me super enthused about the prospect of him leading the offense without a major step up this season.

My hope is that we can get big leads frequently this season and let a lot of the younger guys get reps often. Can be a huge help for their development.

I feel like our defense will always be solid and keep us from falling off too far. We may see more reliance on the running game and defense next year with Prater’s first year under center and what should be a returning Jerome Ford that we can lean on heavily at times.

I mean, here are our losses after this season (* denotes likely draft entrant):

Offense:
Desmond Ridder, Alec Pierce, Josh Whyle*, Leonard Taylor, Michael Young, Jerome Ford*, Vincent McConnell, and Cole Smith
Essentially, we are likely going to be replacing every skill position player and our most tenured OLman, though the rest of the OL should be more than solid in 2022

Defense:
Myjai Sanders, Curtis Brooks, Marcus Brown, Malik Vann, Darrian Beavers, Joel Dublanko, Coby Bryant, Ja'von Hicks, Brian Cook, and Ahmad Gardner*
For those taking notes, that's at least 3/4 DL, 2/3 LBs and our entire base defensive backfield....yeeeesh.

Hopefully coach is looking ahead 1 year while Still focusing on 2021. This isn’t O$U. We need to develop people and give them playing time. Hopefully we have a few big leads in the fourth quarter and we can start grooming some people.

On the basketball side, Mick Did an excellent job at that. He knew he did not have the high-end talent, and he groomed people. I specifically remember him saying how he was working so hard to turn Dion Dixon into a scorer. He knew he would need him to score by his senior year.

Great minds think alike!

RE: College football playoff
My fear is that we end up losing some of these great recruits who had imagined getting significant playing time this year, but get very little PT due to all of the guys from last year coming back for another year. And now that they've made it very easy to transfer, we feel the negative effects of the transfer portal.

I think the transfer portal is a massive advantage for a well run program. Not that we're going to take much from it but with the culture Fickell and co. have built around here people want to be a part of it. I believe they're being very transparent and giving kids opportunities. Occasionally we'll lose a guy like Jakari after Renfro beats him out but the issue is when you lose young players you're developing. Look down the hall at the mutiny at the BB program this season and you see how important that relationship development with your players is in keeping your players out of the portal in high numbers.

Yeah, I'm not thinking that'll be a huge problem here...most every one of those big recruits likely is looking at the depth chart and realizing they're going to have a couple years with no one in front of them after this one, and pair that with (hopefully) a trophy or two this year to tide them over, and I think you'll be fine. The only guys we've lost due to playing time to the portal were players who were beaten out by guys who were younger and more talented than them (Bryant, Jackson, and Robinson), the other portal guys were likely told that they weren't going to see much of the field for one reason or another.

This. There is an incredible culture being built in this program. Not worried about transfers at all.

Sure better than players leaving because the program sucks!
