RE: CFP Recommendation: 6 conf. champs + 6 at-large
FCS Schools Could Make The Jump To FBS For 12 Team Playoffs
It is very interesting. Adding a 12 team field could generate more money which P5 schools could look to expand to 16, and G5 could start raiding each other. The conference in FCS that could be ripped apart in this would be the MVFC/MVC scenerio. Then you have the WAC and ASUN want into FBS business. Could a twelve team field go into expansion mode? Could there be the ASUN, WAC, A-10, MVC and CAA going for FBS membership in the future?
This would mean any D2 schools can be called for replacements as well.

Two downsides:
- Hawaii exemption becomes less valuable
- Expecting fans to go to a Conference Championship Game on the weekend after Thanksgiving
Given that TV drives the bus, this is probably what we'll get. This would then allow the CFP to start either the first or second weekend of December - my hunch is it would be the second weekend just for the logistics of arranging playoff teams, and the team that plays the Thursday or Friday game won't have quite as short a turnaround as they would playing the first weekend of December. I also wouldn't be surprised if we see this:
Saturday, 12/9/23 - 4:40 PM Eastern - First Round Game #1
Saturday, 12/9/23 - 8:20 PM Eastern - First Round Game #2
Tuesday, 12/12/23 - 8:20 PM Eastern - First Round Game #3
Wednesday, 12/13/23 - 8:20 PM Eastern - First Round Game #4
Saturday, 12/31/23 - 4:40 PM Eastern - Quarterfinal #1 (Fiesta/Cotton/Citrus)
Monday, 1/1/24 - 1:00 PM Eastern - Quarterfinal #2 (Orange)
Monday, 1/1/24 - 4:40 PM Eastern - Quarterfinal #3 (Rose Bowl)
Monday, 1/1/24 - 8:20 PM Eastern - Quarterfinal #4 (Sugar)
Monday, 1/8/24 - 8:20 PM Eastern - Semifinal #1 (hosted by Fiesta/Cotton/Citrus)
Tuesday, 1/9/24 - 8:20 PM Eastern - Semifinal #2 (hosted by Fiesta/Cotton/Citrus)
Monday, 1/15/24 - 8:20 PM Eastern - Final
I like your thinking.
Tweaks...
Make all the quarterfinal games on Tuesday and Wednesday night (9-10 days after CCGs). Dec 12 and 13. More time to rest/travel...play a double-header on both those nights. Start one at 6pm ET, the other at 9:30ET. The NFL does doubleheaders...and this CFB playoff is probably equal in viewership/popularity as a regular season NFL doubleheader.
Give two weeks before the final game--Jan 22. More time to rest. Especially in this era of player compensation, a team on --hypothetically--week 16 of the season who just had to travel to/from/to/from/to/from/to a game site in the previous month (it could happen! CCG, road game 1st round, bowl-road game 2nd round, champ-road game finals!)...it just wouldn't have a good PR. Those players will be in the limelight and giving them two weeks to prep/rest/travel/do media will be better.

That CCG loss could hurt them in the at-large selection process.
Conversely, I think it ensures that an upset doesn't screw over the conference and more or less locks up those byes. In fact, I strongly believe there will now be additional support for divisionless championship games.

While I believe there will be more support for doing away with rules dictating how conferences must determine their champion, I also believe that if those restrictions were to be lifted, some conferences may opt to retain divisions (and the Big 12 might adopt divisions they don't currently have) for reasons that Muskie points out.

Not having the P5+1 AQ keeps the selection show interesting. Yes, top 6 are locked in, but you still have to rank them, and their may be a minimum ranking although that doesn't appear so at least to date. Lots of room for bias and subjectivity which will keep the buzz going into selection sunday.

For the first round, I could see one game on Friday night and then a tripleheader on Saturday. This entire exercise (and all of the money that comes with it) all about TV, TV, TV, TV, TV - ESPN is going to want every game and that inherently means that there can't overlapping windows at all. I agree that they're not going to spread the first round out to Tuesday and Wednesday.
The timing around New Year's Day makes sense.
I think it will be spread out more once we get past the quarterfinal round with the assumption that every team is going to need at least 7 days rest, especially with presumably neutral site games.
Thursday/Friday is generally better for neutral site games (at least for fans and local economic interests) compared to Monday/Tuesday (which is partly why the NCAA Tournament follows that schedule). The semifinals would get pushed to Thursday 1/11/24 and Friday 1/12/24 in order to avoid NFL conflicts. The final would then be the next Monday at least 7 days later, which would be 1/22/24.
2024 has New Year's Day on a Monday, so that's actually a situation where the schedule using this format is spread out the most other than times where New Year's Day is on a Saturday. (Note that bowl games get moved to 1/2 when NYD is on a Sunday, so those don't apply.) When NYD falls on any other day of the week, the semifinals can be structured to have a 7 to 9 day turnaround from the quarterfinals, which makes the schedule more compact in those particular years.

RE: CFP Recommendation: 6 conf. champs + 6 at-large
I don’t see what you couldn’t do the opening round as a Friday night game, followed by a Saturday triple header so long as the 12 EST game doesn’t include a West Coast team. That seems pretty easy to achieve.
For the Quarterfinal Bowls we’re probably looking at 3 NYD games and the 4th at 8pm on the 2nd.
Unless you do the Semis on MLK Day, we’re probably looking at weeknight prime time semis. (I personally like the idea of putting them on the Saturday before the Pro Bowl and doing the same with the NCG before the Super Bowl).

Do you really believe that they'd potentially have Team X play in a CCG on a Friday or Saturday in one neutral city...travel back home...and then travel again the following Thursday or Friday to another city (if the away team)?
Seems like too tight of a window to me. Seems like two weeks (or at least 9-10 days) are needed between CCG weekend and the 1st round.

And for TV viewing, the current "Army-Navy game" weekend, with no big ticket games on, followed by a First Round weekend, is better for ratings in the First Round.

RE: CFP Recommendation: 6 conf. champs + 6 at-large
Assuming then that 2 weeks are needed between CCGs and the First Round...
...and that CFB won't challenge the NFL on a Sunday before Jan. 10...or a Saturday AFTER Jan 10...
...and that over 7 days are needed to travel between cities for these teams who win...
Here's what I think the dates will look like in 2023 and beyond.
2023
CCG—Fri Dec 1 and Sat 2
1st round—Fri night Dec 15 and Sat 16 (triple header)
2nd—Mon, Jan 1 (triple header) and Tues night Jan 2
3rd—Friday night, Jan 12 (double header)
champ—Monday night, Jan 22
2024
CCG—Fri Dec 6 and Sat 7
1st—Fri Dec 20 and Sat 21
2nd—Weds Jan 1 and Thurs Jan 2
3rd—Friday night Jan 10
champ—Monday night Jan 20
2025
CCG—Fri Dec 5 and Sat 6
1st—Fri Dec 19 and Sat 20
2nd—Thurs Jan 1*
3rd—Friday night Jan 9
champ—Monday night 19th
*The CFP could also take Friday night the 2nd...but that's chopping a day off of travel for the winner of that game. I don't know if they'd make an exception in this year and have a more narrow window from New Year's Day to the next Friday night...or stretch it out a full two weeks, thus pushing the championship game back to the 26th. Not sure...

How would you do a double header on a Friday night for the 3rd round? I'd do 2 separate nights (Th/F or M/T).

Here is the Pac 12 money quote:
“The Pac-12 supports expansion of the CFP and believes that the (Power Five) champions should annually qualify for the CFP. We greatly appreciate the work of the CFP sub-committee, as well as the thoughtful and productive discussions amongst the management committee this week in Chicago. We now look forward to reviewing the expansion proposal more thoroughly with our members, student-athletes, partners and other key stakeholders.”

Good new is Scott is leaving very soon. Bad news is, it's unlikely his successor will take a different view, as the PAC seems vulnerable without autobids. This could crater the deal.
