Great basketball player and great dude.

Biggest surprise? For me, and there is no close #2, is Dick Dallmer.

After serving in WWII, he became honorable mention all American in his sophomore and junior seasons and a 3rd team all American in his senior year. When he was done, he was UC’s first all American and all time scoring leader.

He was essentially a “fill in” recruit because he had been away from basketball during the war and he was somewhat local according to him. No one could have guessed that he would accomplish so much and put UC basketball on the map for coaches like George Smith who came after Dick was graduated from UC. It is possible that were it not for Dick Dallmer and his accomplishments, UC would hbave never signed George Smith and in turn, never signed The Big “O” and UC would be just another school in regards to basketball.

I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Dallmer several times since he was a friend of my wife’s parents. He was truly a first class person and a first class ambassador for UC.

He also coached hoops at my alma mater, Norwood High, for a couple of years.

Maybe not the biggest surprise but a random one for me was D’Juan Baker. After coming in as a juco transfer he had a really quiet junior year (I forget who he was behind). Then was a really good player when he got his chance as a senior, averaging 13.4 points per game while shooting 86% from the line & 37% from 3.

Baker was so clutch in the 98 tournament. Too bad west banked in that partially blocked three pointer.
