It’s not fair but it’s a hell of a lot better than having no chance which is what we have today

How can it be better when nothing is really going to change? Those six at large bids will go to P5 teams. I'm not falling for the banana in the tailpipe trick.

Better is guaranteeing the G5 two spots in a 12 team playoff.

One G5 team is guaranteed a slot. One is better than ZERO which is what we have now. Demanding two slots are will likely end with nothing. Life isn’t fair. Right now the move is take what we can get then push for more

This is huge -- 6 highest-rated conference champs is waaaay more access than p5 champs + highest rated G5.

I think I read that the current system will remain in place for 2021 and 2022 at least. Current contract doesn't expire until 2026, but they're talking about re-doing it for 12 teams as early as the 2023 season.

My only question would be what if the G5 doesn't have a ranked conference champ? Otherwise great news for the G5 and the AAC in particular if this is approved.

Coastal Carolina and Cincinnati both would have made the playoff in this format last year, with Cincinnati hosting a playoff game.

If I am Boise, no way I leave the MWC for the American. I'd keep winning the MWC and use my brand to schedule good nonconference games as they do now.

Less certain about BYU but I still think they stand pat. Looking at their future schedules, they have some strong home-and-homes. https://fbschedules.com/ncaa/byu/

It's great news for every G5.

That's a big difference.

A quoted response to her tweet:

"No conference would qualify automatically and there would be no limit on the number of participants from a conference."

So the SEC could get 4 teams in and in a down year for the PAC-12 it's possible two G5 teams could make it. In 2020, Cincinnati and Coastal Carolina would have been in. BYU would have missed an at large spot by one team.

According to CBS, the four highest ranked conference champions will be seeded 1-4 and given the 1st round bye. I wonder how this will be received in South Bend, Indiana when they realize the sacred cow, Notre Dame can never be seeded higher than 5th under this system. Assuming CBS has it accurately.

My personal response to the Irish would be that it's time to join a conference if you want the advantages of being in a conference.

That covers my question about an unranked team winning the conference.(which has happened before, and could cause some collusion if it wasn’t addressed)

Sucks to be you. You want to live in your own world and play by your own rules, here’s what you get. Notre dame has been catered to far too often over the years, it’s time for everybody else to force their hand.

There is a reason Notre Dame became a member of the ACC instead of the Big Ten. The same reason Notre Dame plays USC, Stanford, and Navy. Notre Dame has every right to tell the Big to go F themselves.

RE: Lotsa smoke for some fires...
Here's the CFP poll after conference championship week last year.

https://collegefootballplayoff.com/ranki...?year=2020

If using this poll, teams would be:

1. Alabama (bye)
2. Clemson (bye)
3. Ohio St (bye)
4. Oklahoma (bye)
5. Notre Dame
6. Texas A&M
7. Florida
8. Cincinnati
9. Georgia
10. Iowa St
11. Indiana
12. Coastal Carolina

By conference:

SEC - 4
Big 10 - 2
Big 12 - 2
ACC - 2
AAC - 1
Sun Belt - 1

First round matchups (played at campus sites):

Coastal Carolina @ Notre Dame
Indiana @ Texas A&M
Iowa St @ Florida
Georgia @ Cincinnati

Georgia and Cincinnati actually played in the Peach Bowl and it was a great game. Imagine if it was at Cincinnati's home field instead of Georgia's back yard?

And then you have this:

Quote:The proposal, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, calls for the bracket to include the six highest-ranked conference champions and the six remaining highest-ranked teams as determined by the CFP selection committee.

"No conference would qualify automatically and there would be no limit on the number of participants from a conference," the proposal states.

RE: Lotsa smoke for some fires...
It is probable that all 5 P5 champs will earn autobids most years, and even when they don’t, I would expect a p5 champ to earn an at-large. But I think it’s probable that we will at least occassionally have at least one g5 champ ranked higher than at least one of the p5 champs.

This is about as good as g5 could have hoped for a recommendation short of automatic bids for every league.

If you schedule decently and win, you have a shot. And an artificial perception barrier is lessened or perhaps removed entirely.

I was a little leery when I first started reading this. Now that the discussion has expanded, I can't believe the P5 schools agreed (or at least sorta agreed).

It looks like this is moving forward. No dates announced officially, but the CFP recommends it officially.

Pending approval - which it will be approved - @CFBPlayoff headed to 12 teams. Earliest start would be after 2023 regular season, sources told
@Stadium. Because of impact of expanded playoff, expect anywhere from 4-10 bowls to be eliminated by 2023, sources said

Chris Hummer@chris_hummer

Here's how many teams each conference would've put in the #CFBPlayoff since 2014 if we were operating under the recommended format for expansion
@RossDellenger reported earlier.

Big Ten: 20
SEC: 19
ACC: 12
Big 12: 12
Pac-12: 11
AAC: 5
Independent: 2*
M-West: 1
MAC: 1
Sun Belt: 1

Only conference missing from that list is CUSA.

The trade off is going to be fewer bowl slots for the G5 teams. ESPN owns those bowls, and will be throwing all their resources at the extra playoff games. Won't necessarily be a bad thing to have fewer bowls. It was already getting hard to fill them all.
