Also will be interesting to see what BYU does.
Do they feel the need to join a conference (AAC or back to MWC) to compete for that one guaranteed slot (and guaranteed revenue share) or do they compete with Notre Dame (and the other indies) for one of six at-larges.
I'm inclined to think they view the latter as advantageous given they can schedule aggressively and own all their money, but there's still a lot of math to run.
I just don't see how football-only Boise to AAC is still even floating around. If that is the only move AAC makes then the closest school, Tulsa (who just got in the AAC by the skin of its teeth, is definitely not among their peers, has an undergrad enrollment of 3,000, and even with a $1 billion endowment has rumblings of dropping football because it's bleeding $$ worse than we ever were) is 1,500 miles away.
Ok, they want football-only Boise with some western partners. So you add San Diego St and that is 1,000 miles from Boise. They're all-sports so you add another all-sports around the west. Who? By all (public) accounts Air Force is just fine with where they are. No way to Wyoming or Utah St, so now it's Colorado St or bust...and they are still roughly 1,000 miles to Tulsa.
And, in general, are schools in the Central time zone going to want Mountain and/or Pacific kickoffs?

Most colleges students have to find PT jobs to have money in their pockets to make ends meet. I also don't think they're exploited either because 99.9% of these athletes want to play regardless of how many games they play.
But more games cut into their student time and try to sell me "well they have tudors". At the end of dat day it doesn't matter what side of the argument you fall on because greed always win.
Admittedly I have been out of the loop for a while, but there are some things that may not have changed. One is an NCAA prohibition for part time jobs for scholarship athletes. The past coaches brought this about by arranging false jobs provided by boosters which involved no work.
I don't know the present "cost of attendance" money, but I doubt it is anything like the $5,000 mentioned above. While talking about "free education, food, housing, textbooks, etc., remember that the Athletic Department writes a series of checks (using the above figures of $31,000 to $51,000) for all these things to the university coffers. They get it all while the athlete may still get zero. Remember also that for every 125 new FB athletes brought in over 5 seasons, 40 must be "FIRED" by cut or transfer to keep only 85 for football each fall. Since the individual median household income in Alabama is less than $40,000, the price of continuing a child's college education is huge.
fifteen seconds on google says $5,386 is the athletic stipend for out of state players at Alabama in 2015 a 34% increase from 2013. I'd be willing to bet its gone up since. I was not inflating the numbers to make a point. I picked one of the schools most likely to have its players in the extra games you are complaining about. If Alabama is shelling out $5000 per player so is Clemson and Ohio State. Thats above and beyond what they were getting before. These guys are not starving and unable to go to a movie. If a player cant afford to take a girl to a movie its because he spent all his money as soon as he got it. they do need to have classes in financial management every year for all players.

RE: Lotsa smoke for some fires...
Thanks for the info on stipends. With the elimination of athletic dorms, the athletes are now out on the open market for living space. The quote from Reggie Ragland was very enlightening in where his stipend money goes - mainly for house rent and food - since he and his friends like to eat a lot.
Back in the 60s, athletes at Bama lived in Lewis Hall, one of the old "Presidential dorms" before Bryant Hall was built expressly for athletes. It was reputed that star athletes of the 60s posed for the fountain in front of Bryant Hall.

Notre Dame and BYU
If Notre Dame and BYU join a conference they would not be in the playoffs. They would get beat in the Championship Game at best. Pick your opponent and let the fans bases get you in. Two of the biggest fan bases in the country.

Didn't Notre dame just get in the four team playoff while in a conference?

Unfortunately yes, they shouldn't have been in the playoffs
But Bama ran them out the field

Early rounds of playoffs may have plenty of those(blowouts)...
As they probably should (just like every other sport’s tournament). And I am sure opponents of an expanded playoff will say, “See, those teams didn’t belong there to begin with.” But that’s part of the benefit of being the higher seed, you get an easier first round game. And as pointed out in past years, it’s already been that way with just four teams.
But there could be upsets, and at least now things would be settled on the field. And everyone would, at least theoretically, have a chance when the season starts to play for a championship. Like every other sport, and football division.

The CFP semifinals have been largely uncompetitive as it is, and nobody seems to recognize, or care, about this fact.
