The battling Buccos are a blooper reel in the making. It's an absolute joke. The players obviously share some blame in this, but they're nothing more than bench players or AAA players that's put in an unfortunate situation. The Pirates are just a vanity project for Nutting and it's shameful.

There are three MLB teams worse than the Pirates at the moment. Of course their fans would probably like new ownership as well, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Americans don't like it, but this is the strength of pro/rel in other places around the world.

You can't just slide by and not try to win as an owner.

For better or for worse we are stuck with the closed leagues we have.

But given that, I would like to see teams punished for losing. Why should a team that isn't trying hard to win be rewarded with an equal share of league revenue and high draft picks? I'd answer that question with:

(1) Give each franchise half of a share of league revenue as a base amount. The other half of league revenue is distributed according to success. (The English Premier League does something like this with its TV revenue.) The teams with the worst W-L records get a very small percentage; the teams that make and advance in the playoffs get the largest percentages, decreasing gradually down to the bottom of the standings.

(2) Abolish the player draft. If the owners are too antsy about that, then use a draft lottery to assign every pick in each round, with each team getting an equal chance at picking in any place in the round. Losing is not rewarded with higher draft picks or even a better chance at higher draft picks.

The NBA has that.

But again, if an owner's bottom line was hit hard for having one of the worst teams, and they weren't rewarded for it with the best draft picks, there would effectively be a salary floor anyway.

The owner has enough money to make millions in political donations, but not enough to get beyond a Single A bullpen.
