RE: Cruz Jr Hired as Next Coach
Terrific article on how he plans to capitalize on Rice brain power...

https://ouresquina.com/2021/jose-cruz-jr...ain-power/

...with regards to the section on analytics, as I believe I mentioned before, Rice Baseball and Sports Management have teamed together to develop a course on "The Introduction of Baseball Analytics", which is being offered for the first time next Semester. There will be one primary professor to oversee the program, with guest speakers from across baseball...and interested students will serve as interns (with a modest stipend) to assist the baseball coaching staff in collecting and analyzing the data. Ultimately, the data will be used to help position players defensively and provide "heat maps" of opposing hitters to guide our pitchers.

BTW, note that we've already hired a Director of Baseball Analytics and we're going to be hiring a Director of Player Development (following the recent practice of some of the elite P5 programs to get around the NCAA limit of 2 paid assistant coaches and one volunteer coach).

Exciting stuff!

I can't tell you how much I believe this will improve these players. Really happy to see Jose embrace this but also get Rice academics on board. Other schools have done this successfully (NC State comes to mind). It is also data that can be provided to MLB teams for players wanting to play pro ball which will also aid recruiting. Exciting times ahead.

This. I suggested it to JK regarding football 10 or so years ago

Bones, just a hint-- put up the money to sponsor said initiative and it will happen. Note-- the baseball analytics course will be funded within the School of Social Sciences and the Sports Management department.

First, I don't personally have that kind of money anymore.... and to the extent I do, I would want to make sure that the AD et al were on board. They didn't ASK me to fund it. They didn't tell me how much my idea would cost. The idea, much like my food truck idea went into a black hole somewhere. I did this once and the AD (not JK) wasn't on board with the idea, so I did something else.... I funded one of THEIR ideas. Why is it okay for me to fund one of their ideas, but if I bring them an idea that they obviously eventually buy in to, I have to also bring the funding??

Second, I DID tell them ways to fund it/ raise money from alternative sources... specifically healthcare. Covid and the drives at the stadium for vaccinations and voting were small but perfect examples of the sort of ideas I gave them... but 6+ years later... and for political/public health purposes but not for raising money or attention or profiles at Rice. I don't know if the ADs office had much to do with that, other than saying 'okay' to the facility use... or maybe they did it all on their own... so I don't know if they even see/saw it. I proposed partnerships with the Medical center providers and insurance payers to promote wellness and 'quality' which were and still are major focuses of large amounts of dollars in healthcare. Those identical ideas were utilized there... though I don't know that we got any money for it... with lots of positive press I might add for Rice. The things we did during COVID, we could have been doing for the past 8+ years for mammograms, well child visits, immunizations, flu shots, eye exams, any of a large number of things, before, during and after games at Rice stadium, Tudor, Reckling and other places. My idea would have also involved the rec center and all of the community members of those facilities, plus the thousands who run the hedges and stands (or used to)... and of course all of the students. Let providers provide the services and let insurers pay us for providing the 'outlet' as well as the invite. We had hundreds of school age kids and their families ... many NOT from West U or near the med center... at our last game. Some I recognize from areas where quality care isn't readily available. I'm betting we could have helped some insurance companies close some care gaps.... which means $$. Billions of dollars collectively.

Third, I don't work in academia so I can't possibly know how to make all this work. My idea was to take a Rice-like/cerebral approach to football analytics and to have a course in it that might attract fans (as a continuing ed course at Glasscock) and students (as an analytics/stats course). Have coaches be guest lecturers and/or demonstrate how they might use such stats. Might that connect Rice and Rice football better to 'math' students?? How about Sports Medicine people in the Med Center who perhaps played ball at Harvard? How about just fans of UT who couldn't possibly get that sort of 1:1 time with a college coach at UT, who can then use what he's learned to enjoy his UT games more... but now Rice is his 'second team'?? I proposed all of this on this forum as well. Heck, if its a college course, maybe we can increase our 'sports management' offerings and attract more grad transfers??

I appreciate the advice Walt... but sometimes you're doing well to lead a horse to water. I specifically suggested on here dozens of times and in person to JK years ago the use of food trucks at our games. A few weeks ago, I suggested it again in front of a large donor who thought it was a great idea and he asked a VERY highly placed member of the ADs office 'why aren't we doing that'... the response was along the lines of, 'we just hadn't thought about that.' I bit my tongue. Moments later, the donor suggested that the AD's office member bring him a multi-million dollar wish list (including academic things to take to now President DeRoches) so that he could work on the funding and administrative needs for it.

Bones, just an FYI-- the baseball analytics initiative was not done through the Athletic Department, though they were kept in the loop on discussions. Rather, after getting Cheito's buy in, it was coordinated through the School of Social Sciences and the Sports Management department. Quite frankly, it was a match made in heaven, and the timing was perfect. Unbeknown to me at the time, the Sports Management department had already gotten approval to offer a new, sports analytics major, so when they were approached with the idea of a baseball analytics program they just ran with the idea...and sought guidance and input from Jose. The whole thing came together-- from the initial idea to the program/course outline-- in just over a month.

We’ve hired a new player development coach.

Previously was the pitching coach at Siena in Albany, NY.

GREAT, but you're missing my point entirely.

I suggested YEARS AGO that we involve the University... Remember when we spoke about 'money ball' for football? Looking at statistics in a different way? Maybe involve math sci department? I spoke about looking at pass plays and special teams coverage like physics. I spoke about having the coaches or players who want to be coaches involved in Doerr to teach the alumni or interested fans about the wishbone. ALL these things I spoke about....

and you suggested that I also arrange the funding and apparently get the coaches and University departments to buy in?

That's precisely my point, Walt... If I'm doing all that, wouldn't that make me the AD with a big six figure salary??

Obviously things can happen quickly as you note when the ADs office buys in... but without that, its a struggle. Sometimes even when the coach wants it. See OG.

ETA - a lot of the things I've suggested had to do with fans and getting butts in the seats... which isn't usually a coaches top priority. They want wins... not 'better concessions'

As an outsider, it feels like he is using our brand to promote product for side $. Many of his tweets explicitly mention a product he is promoting. Please put me in my place, b/c I would like to be wrong on this.

I really don't have a huge problem with this. If Mike Leach can write a book and make money off it, then I don't really have a problem with this. Plus, it could be a very subtle way to gain a significant leverage in recruiting pitchers.

Nothing subtle about it. By focusing on development with state of the art tools we are making a very clear competitive differential pitch toward pitching prospects.

I expressed the same concern a while ago. Changed my mind. My impression is that he's doing this to engage with potential recruits. Social media is the coin of the realm for the kids.

I think what all here need to understand is that all of the products mentioned are well known to engaged pitching recruits. They already, in most cases, use some if not all of these products so advertising that these products are part of the development program at Rice is awesome. Promoting the products is also promoting the culture that Rice, and specifically in this case, Coach Bostick are building. Not only are these exceptional tools they are being implemented by someone who knows how to use them. I for one hope these "product" Tweets continue.

Regarding his contribution to the book this is a book any parent that wants a fantastic guide to player development etc. should get. Walter Beede is the father of Tyler Beede (1st rd pick out of Vandy I believe in 2013) and has been a coach and involved in player development for over 30 yrs. Great resource and asking Coach Bostick to be a contributor I'm sure was an honor for him.

Great resource. Every Little League/Pony League should have a copy for the technical information and to promote league play.

Dan Heefner from Dallas Baptist made a talk for the men's breakfast at my church Saturday morning. One of the things he led in with, probably because he likely gets a lot of questions about it, is all the products that are advertised and purchased by baseball teams to improve their performance. He said none of them help much. 'Had to take the man's word for it. Seven straight years of more than 40 wins. I hesitate to say this but really, if they played in Big 12 or SEC, I am not sure they would have that distinction. But they did okay in the TCU regional last year, so there's that....and they've been to post season a lot lately.

I have a lot of respect for Heefner, but his comment probably reflects the fact that DBU doesn't have the resources for some of the advanced tech/analytical tools and the staffing to utilize them correctly.
