Cincinnati Athletics Launches IMPACT to Prepare Athletes for NIL Changes
I probably missed this but could someone explain this to me. Are college athletes now allowed to get paid for their likeness? Can college athletes do commercials, speaking engagements, autograph signings, etc and get paid?

Quote:
CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics announced the launch of IMPACT, powered by Opendorse Ready, the market-leading Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) readiness program.

Available to all Cincinnati student-athletes, IMPACT is a comprehensive development program designed to prepare Bearcats student-athletes to positively influence their brands and platforms in the Name, Image, and Likeness world.

As an additional component of the IMPACT program, UC will engage Empower, a national creative media agency with Headquarters in Cincinnati, for group educational sessions on impactful topics and direct, 1-on-1 personal-brand coaching and brand building with a select group of student-athletes.

This is in preparation for the expected proposal and vote for a formal NIL policy. The Committee in charge of reviewing NIL for the NCAA recommended that they allow it, and there are 31 states who have passed or are in the act of passing NIL legislation of their own, along with a Federal bill being tossed around the Capitol.

Your hypotheticals could be true once everything passes. No one is really sure what the NCAA is going to come up with, but most of the state policies that have passed are essentially anywhere from unrestricted pay directly to the individuals for use of their likeness to a University managed escrow account set up for each athlete that holds the money until after they graduate/leave the program. The NCAA has made more than a few allusions to the belief that S-As shouldn't be allowed to negotiate group likeness disbursements (a la the NFLPA paying every NFL player for their likeness in a video game)....which pisses me off as an ardent fan of the EA NCAA Football franchise.

RE: Cincinnati Athletics Launches IMPACT to Prepare Athletes for NIL Changes
This is long overdue. Ridiculous that student-athletes can't profit off their NIL when the schools they play for make millions off of them. This costs the universities very little aside from adding the staff to educate the athletes and monitor compliance. On Chad Brendel's most recent Holy Grail podcast, I heard him say something about Ahmad Gardner being able to make money coaching at camps soon. Maybe this is what he was referring to? I was doing other things while listening, so I may have missed the details on that one.

Also, they've been talking about NIL stuff on sports talk radio up here in Columbus a ton the past few months. Schools in major cities like UC and OSU stand to gain the most from this, as there will be more marketing and event opportunities for our athletes than the rural campuses for the most part. Now, if you're going to Georgia or Alabama, you'll still have plenty of opportunities due to the popularity and power of those programs. But this is going to hurt mid-tier and lower-tier programs who aren't in major markets.

I always loved the fact that my first engineering co-op back in 2006 had to be unpaid because it would've been an NCAA violation since I stated that I played a sport at Cincinnati on my resume that Turner used to hire me. Thankfully the NCAA dammed that river of stupidity in 2007. After that whole ordeal, I've just found the NCAA completely useless.

Maybe I'm wrong but won't this just turn recruiting into the wild wild west of the Southwest Conference days? What's stopping Joe Schmo's auto dealership from calling up a potential recruit and telling him he'll pay him $100K to do a couple commercials if the kid commits to his favorite college?

Well, yeah, that could happen...then again, it's happening already without the commercials at quite a few schools.

I mean, technically speaking, that's still a recruiting violation since affiliates of the University (boosters, fundraisers, etc.) aren't allowed to correspond with prospective student athletes. So if it did happen prior to the kid being enrolled, they'd be hit...and probably harder now than before.

At the end of the day, this is 95% good and 5% bad...yes there will be shady dealings, but I'm willing to accept those so that all of the young men and women who have been used to the benefit of the University without receiving any further compensation (their scholarships are for their play on the field, not their pictures in the posters/ad campaigns). Plus, it would potentially allow for better competition as the incentive to go pro wouldn't be as high for some...say Nike was able to given Zion a huge shoe contract while he was still at Duke...probably a poor example, but whatever.

Great point.

During our away games at Purdue and Illinois, I chuckled at the difference in in-stadium marketing versus Nippert. It's almost like a minor league baseball game versus the majors. Purdue has things like a high-profile gas giveaway from a local gas station with one location.

That is weird because when I was in school (1984-1989), Roger McClendon was an engineering co-op student, and I always heard they had to make sure he was paid the same as other co-ops in similar jobs.

That was absolutely a part of it, my 3rd-6th co-ops I couldn't get a raise unless ALL of the other co-ops did.

All I know is what compliance told me about that first one...they paid me, but it was in an escrow that was inaccessible until my graduation or until I worked for another place where I "did not use my status as a student athlete to be hired." Unpaid wasn't the best way too put it, but it felt like it since I couldn't use the money I was being paid...it was also around the Huggins stuff so I'm assuming they were being hyper vigilant with compliance. Maybe things were different in the 80's, or they just didn't give a **** because at that point Catlett had done enough damage to the program anyways.

I'm glad you were at least able to collect your money later, although that still really blows. Just out of curiosity, how do taxes work in that situation? Did you pay the taxes the year you earned the money, or the year you collected it?

Taxes were taken out of the paychecks at the front end, so there were no other taxes removed after the fact when I collected. Since I didn't hit the income threshold they basically all came back as a refund anyways.

Ancient history but UC Bus was once a 5 year Co-op deal like Eng. UC put in a 4 year no Co-op because the NCAA felt it was an unfair advantage. It came into being for The Big O and also Ralph Davis. I did the 4 year and in retrospect I think it was a mistake.

i'm interested in how this gets done. The examples of car dealerships and market power are all applicable but i feel that those dollars have a limit. imo, social media and memorabilia are two areas where money can really be made more broadly, not just reserved to superstars.

i am concerned about how the monetization of ncaas might contribute to even more stratification of teams (less of conferences). i realize that there are always going to be blue bloods and national programs, so i'm not talking about them, but i wonder how Cincy will compete with the next tier down (however defined); and how these regs can reshape that order.

Like most things nowdays, I don't think this is too well thought out.

Let's be honest. Say the guys team is so-so next year and the women's team is great. Davenport and a couple of the other guys get commercial deals and not one girl gets anything. The sh*tstorm will be of biblical proportions.

Free market...no one in Cincinnati gives a **** about women's basketball unfortunately. If they're private contractors as they aren't being funded by public money, then Title IX doesn't apply.

I think it has been perfectly well thought out.

Next year Saban at Alabama and Day at Ohio State will look at their roster and decide what player at another school they need to transfer. They will turn to their big money backers and say, "Offer this kid a LOT of money to use his likeness in your commercials."

UC has to make the playoffs this year, because after this likeness thing passes there will only be a dozen or so competitive teams in college football. The rest will just be feeder teams.

Will college basketball uniforms soon look like NasCar or IndyCar suits.
