Let's be honest. Say the guys team is so-so next year and the women's team is great. Davenport and a couple of the other guys get commercial deals and not one girl gets anything. The sh*tstorm will be of biblical proportions.

Free market...no one in Cincinnati gives a **** about women's basketball unfortunately. If they're private contractors as they aren't being funded by public money, then Title IX doesn't apply.

You really think that it's going to be that cut and dried?

In today's world?

Yes.

This is going to be ripe for abuse on a scale we’ve never seen before.

Boosters are going to openly be smack dab in the middle of the recruiting process.

A few thoughts:

1. The small private schools are going to do better with this than people think they will. Duke, Wake Forest, Tulane, SMU, Tulsa… their alumni have more accumulative wealth than schools like UC and a lot of others.

2. Donors in urban markets are going to support athletes from other markets. Ex. Ole Miss athletes are going to get money from businesses in Memphis. In our market, a business like Kroger is going to throw money at Ohio State and Kentucky athletes. Get ready for commercials in town featuring a star XU basketball player or an OSU football player pimping one of UC Health’s local competitor hospitals/health systems.

3. Because of #2, UC best be trying to arrange deals for their guys in other markets. A Des Ridder car commercial that runs in Louisville an Ahmad Gardner BBQ sauce deal in Detroit, etc.

The University won't be arranging **** when it comes to private company promotions...that's literally against the letter of every law that has been passed. The S-As can go get theirs and they can be advised about the details and contracts by a sponsored entity, but the University itself can't set it up for them.

Your other points remain (and still happen now anyways, just without actual work for that compensation), but it's not like UC is going to be brokering Ad deals for its players. Also, this isn't going to affect a majority of our recruiting, since I doubt many companies are going to be shelling out for a 3* freshman who isn't going to see the field consistently for 2 years.

It’s going to impact recruiting directly at every football and basketball factory...and for other schools with boosters with huge companiy ad dollars to spend who want to play AD whenever possible...just wait until the word gets out that Fred Ex is throwing ad sponsorship dollars to all Memphis recruits just for signing.

This is going to end up looking New Coke awesome in practice.

Forgot that gem!

There will be loop holes so big you can drive a train through them. Nobody says ad sponsorship $$ needs to translate to actually being in an ad. It will end up being used as a signing bonus for a lot of schools who will hammer it as a recruiting tool.

UK and World Wide Wes can come out of the shadows and operate legitimately.

So, essentially its turning back the clock to the 60's and 70's when boosters went on the recruiting trips with the coach? Catlett always brought a booster with him on visits.

They will not have to go. The coaches will know the numbers that they have waiting for them when they meet in recruits living rooms.

Let the bidding wars commence.

Oh sure, donors in urban markets are going to support athletes from other markets. Just like athletes from urban markets often go to schools in other markets.

But the home team has a big advantage in marketing.

There's lots of UK alums in Cincinnati. But can you really see a Cincinnati car dealership signing a large sponsorship deal with an Oak Hills football player who is going to Kentucky?

Forget Joe Blow Auto, I am talking about Kroger.

They are sending a ton of money to UK and Louisville right now. Kroger had the naming rights to UK’s football stadium. Louisville is building a new baseball facility that is being funded by Kroger. Get ready to see UK and Louisville athletes getting paid internships at Kroger HQ.

What’s really funny is that we all just assume it’s going to be big established businesses that are spending these dollars. Just wait until individual boosters or groups of boosters (perhaps in concert with team staff) start forming corporate entities solely for the purpose of funneling $$ to keep the recruiting pipelines rolling.

You think I’m joking. The low hanging fruit for fraud and misuse will be abundant once people start getting their heads around what kind of Pandora’s Box this opens.

The difference is between Kroger and the auto dealer is that Kroger isn't going to be corrupt. Kroger will only sign sponsorship or internship deals that improve their bottom line.

Kroger, 5/3, GE, P&G, etc don't do many celebrity endorsements. Why would they start now?

No, it's going to be private companies run by alums. And private companies are larger in big cities.

But they'll only spend serious money if they see a return on that investment.

And they'll get higher return at schools that are 1) more dominant in their market, and 2) in a larger market. That's why OSU might be the best-positioned school in the whole country to benefit from NIL rights: Columbus is probably the biggest market in the country that's completely dominated by one school.
