Bloomgren Salary
Some of the discussion in the baseball thread made me look at the most recent Rice 990 filing, which lists the compensation of some high paid university employees (not exactly sure how they determine who gets listed-as some rather low paid people get listed-for example Renee Block, who made 163k-why is she listed over unlisted professors who certainly make more??).

Anyhow, the 2019 filing lists Bloomgren's compensation as $1.332MM. This would rank third in C-USA behind North Texas and UAB.

So I guess the question becomes-why are we willing to pay at the top of the conference in football-but not in baseball, our most historic program?

The football coach's salary is endowed.

Isn’t the whole point of an endowing a coaching salary that it provides budgetary flexibility for the rest of the department?

As to your point re: the LSU game-I don’t understand how that would influence budgeting on a 5-year coaching contract given that it was a one time revenue loss. Perhaps it could effect a signing bonus of some kind-but doesn’t make sense to me how it would effect it in the long run, when we’ve got other money games scheduled going forward (Texas and Arkansas this year).

Because we DO pay at the top of the conference in baseball. I do not know the exact salary of Bragga, but it was well north of $200,000.

Got it-Well, if true, unclear to me why we are seeing candidates drop left and right from wanting the Rice job (besides not wanting to work for our AD).

First off, we don't know if candidates are dropping left and right. I don't think Gautreau was ever a serious candidate (outside Kendall's mind). He might have interviewed, but with no Texas ties whatsoever, he was not going to be a leading candidate. If Allen did drop out after his second interview (likely earlier this week after the regional round), it could have been over salary, especially given there are a number of other quality P5 programs with current HC openings (e.g., ASU, LSU), who have the resources to pay MUCH higher salaries. Our salary would have been a bump up for him, but not a doubling or more. Also, I'm not convinced Allen would have been a better choice than Hallmark. I think most of the Rice community would be behind Patrick as the next head coach.

I would be. I'm just not sure it's a good move for him.

You seem to be discounting the reality that both Patrick and his wife (Jada) bleed Blue & Gray, and would likely love to return to Houston. Also, from a recruiting standpoint, Rice is an easier sell for the hotbed of local talent, especially with the Rice Investment.

Not true at all re: Gautreau.

I thought Rice doesnt actually pay Blomgren, since his salary is considered an endowment.

There's nothing stopping us from sweetening the pay on top of the endowment. Nobody else is going to decide to pay him, after all.
