The Big Ten was expecting to finish a 6-year rotation in 2021 where every team played everybody else at least twice and at least once at home. Then start a new 6-year rotation in 2022. So since they were starting a new cycle in 2022 anyway, it seemed like the logical year to switch to a divisionless format instead where they would start playing 5 permanent rivals every year and play the other 8 teams every other year.

I thought this idea had a lot of momentum in 2019 but now I am not so sure. The 2020 schedule got screwed up and teams did not play everybody they were supposed to. Sometimes I wonder if the Big Ten might try to tweak the 2022 schedule to make up for the missed games in 2020. But now I have a feeling the Big Ten will just forget about it and just push forward with the old plan and change nothing.

They may or may not opt to go divisionless---but my point is I doubt they are still adamantly opposed to a rule allowing divisionless CCG's. It might require specific language to address any concerns they might have---but I suspect the Big10 would be much more supportive this time around.

Yes, I agree with that part. Whether or not the Big Ten decides to go divisionless itself, they are likely to support a permanent change to the CCG game rules to support a divisionless format.

I wonder if rather than changing the rules, maybe the conferences can consider trying a champions week format like the Big Ten tried last year.

In other words, leave the scheduling for the last week of the regular season flexible and try to match the best 2 teams in a CGG, and match the 3rd best team against the 4th best team, etc. Or if a conference still has divisions, match the 2 division winners against each other in the ccg. And the 2nd best teams in each division against each other, etc. You can set it up so that each division will be the home team in opposite years for non-ccg games.

You go with this format, you don't even need to change the rules for the CCG, because those rules are only necessary if you want the CCG to be the 13th game.

The ACC wants non divisional flexibility for regular season scheduling so games like UNC Wake, FSU GA Tech and Clemson VA Tech can happen more often

You are then asking schools to have the CCG to be their 12th game and have 11 games regularly scheduled, leaving money on the table. In a non COVID year, I don't see that happening.

I'd be fine with a rule change to allow unbalanced divisions or no divisions at all. It would give the SBC some working room to try and convince USM to come on over.

I wouldn't be surprised if P5 conferences agreed to do away with any rules about who plays in a CCG and also support allowing conferences to have a four team championship tournament. Coupled with retaining the four team CFP but limiting it to champs only effectively creates a 20 team playoff within the P5. They could still choose to reserve a spot in the NY6 for teams outside the P5.

I would prefer it be completely unregulated other than only allowing just 1 extra game to determine a league champion. Having a mini-playoff is too much of a safety issue--especially in light of an expanded playoff. However, that would still allow the option of leaving the last week of conference play open so that the schedule could be altered (based on the standings after 7 conference games) to effectively create a "mini-playoff" by using every teams 8th game.
