Because it was the Southern part of Utah, it was were the LDS cotton and Tobacco farms were, and many of the early settlers were from the South.

Thanks for the info!

I mentioned this on the WAC board, but Utah Tech would allow branding as UT. Not bad.

Absolutely correct, and unless you live in Georgia you wouldn’t know that the flagship university mascot is spelled Uga while UGA designates the university (I noticed you were a fellow Dawg fan).

Utah Tech will be fantastic for rebranding for just general student population in the future. Like others have pointed out, under the name Dixie no one would know where it is in the first place unless you're already near it. Whereas Utah Tech puts it in line with a lot of other states that have a good Tech option (even if they're not at the same quality just yet) - people know Techs. CalTech, MIT, Georgia Tech, etc.

Getting that *insert state name here* Tech as your name is good for business.

I could also see "UTech" as an option, for the "who techs?" "yoU Tech. Come tech at UTech" ads and such.

What "wokeness" are you referring to?

Things like removing and rebranding cultural touchstones, institutions, and historical areas because of perceived association with racism and prejudice regardless of how attenuated it was, distant it was, or how the modern usage no longer has any such undertones or meaning.

Would you care for examples?

Looks like some form of "Utah Tech" will be the name. Not bad. I always thought Dixie State was pretty poor name.

Ooh, ooh I’ve got one. Just saw this morning that one of Oxford’s colleges removed a portrait of Queen Elizabeth. Why? Because Monarchy is associated with Colonialism and her photo might not be viewed as welcoming by certain international students.

I was in the Dixie National Forest just last week. I wondered how long that name would stay on the Forest. Probably best to change it to Ute National Forest if a change is made.

The National Forest was not named until 1905. Even Indian Territory wanted to side with the Confederacy because 3 of the 5 had slaves, but figured if the North won, they would take it out on them and Canada. However I think the Dixie origin is something other than the American South iirc.

Is it offensive to name national forests after indigenous tribal groups?

Some will find that offensive. But it's a hell of a thing to take the Indian Girl off the Land o Lakes butter but keep the land. That's white folks at work.

Without examples of positively marketed native Americans they will slip from the collective conscious. When you use the words Knights, Pirates, Commodores, Boilermakers, Cornhuskers, Deacons, etc., etc. you are hearkening back to an idealized connotation of a what was considered strong and worthwhile. College students did not develop nicknames to portray themselves as weak or losers.

In the popular fiction of the 10's, 20;s and early 30's, Native Americans were the outnumbered but brave warriors fighting to stay alive. Kids wanted to be Indians not the settlers. It's a shame and a cultural white wash by the fringe.

Dixie is a French word for their $10 note. It came here through New Orleans and the Louisiana Territory.

Except neither Oxford nor the College made that decision. The students voted to remove it. Honestly, not sure why they did; if you wanted to remove everything from the UK that was colonial in nature, there wouldn't be much left.

The real question is will the high school down the street from the current Dixie State change its name too since a cursory look on Google Maps shows that the main HS in St. George is Dixie High.

The name needed to be changed because it was lousy branding that was clearly confusing to most Americans who had no idea where the school was located. That would be true whether or not someone perceives the word Dixie as evidence of racism.

That being said, I confess that I have a hard time taking people who use the word "woke" seriously. Its use, especially in a context like this, exhibits a cultural and political bias in its own right, and to me it diminishes the message the user is trying to convey.

Neither Magdalen College nor the University made the initial decision but they affirmed the right of students to vote on such matters and the queen’s portrait was removed. I’m not sure why they did it either other than students are forever in search of one cause or another.

Dixie is a name of a female as well. There were Native American women named Dixie. This is woke politics for sure. People need to get educated that words does not mean it had to do with slavery.

I mean, in this case it's specifically to do with the area being settled by confederates and former confederates, and has nothing to do with women's names.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_(Utah)

Quote:Origin Edit
“[The] first groups of settlers [arriving in Spring 1857] - the Adair and Covington Companies - were people from the Southern States, mainly from Mississippi, Alabama, Virginia, Texas, and Tennessee.”[5] While there is no indication of slavery in Utah’s cotton farming, Robert Dockery Covington, the leader of the second company of saints, was formerly a slave overseer and owner of eight slaves in the 1840 Census,[6] which made “farming a very profitable occupation.”[7] A contemporary said: “He was a strong Rebel sympathizer and rejoiced whenever he heard of a Southern victory.”[8][9] Covington was the first President of the Washington Branch of the LDS Church.[10] Covington's first counselor was Alexander Washington Collins, who the contemporary says was a former slave driver, who boastfully, with humor, and in public, told horrific stories of whippings and rapes of his slaves.[8][9][11]

Also, "Dixie State" is just a profoundly stupid name for a college located at the intersection of Utah, Arizona, and Nevada even if it were totally benign. Being "Utah (something)" is better all-around.
