McNaney improves to 63.96 (209' 10") on his 3rd throw to finish 20th. He was seeded 19th, so a solid season for him.

Wow! Mississippi State has 3 of the top 5 (75.61-76.73 meters). (Two are from Iceland, the third is from Trinidad & Tobago.)

Out of the 24 in the field:

Iceland - 2
Trinidad and Tobago - 1
Germany - 1
Switzerland - 1
Denmark - 1
Texas - 3 (and we don't even have high school javelin)

RE: 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships
If tonight is an accurate measure, be prepared to be frustrated at ESPN's coverage of tomorrow's women's 10K finals. Even though it was a record breaking race - 10 runners broke a record that had stood for over 40 years, the lousy announcers did not even pay attention until the final 3 laps. Here's the breakdown (listing the winner's time as the "end"):

0 - 1:35.07 show race
1:35.07 - 2:57.82 interview Decathlon leader
2:57.82 - 4:49.05 show race
4:49.05 - 5:29.06 show one jump in the long jump
5:29.06 - 6:12.36 show race
6:12.36 - 9:25.87 commercials + show "quad box"
9:25.87 - 15:41.79 show race in background, while paying no attention, but talk about John McDonnell for 5 out of the 6 minutes of "coverage"
15:41.79 - 18:11.90 commercials
18:11.90 - 21:44.98 show race
21:44.98 - 24:15.38 commercials
24:15.38 - 27:41.87 show race

If you don't count the 5 minutes they spent NOT talking about the race that was going on, they followed the 10K for 15:25.69 and did NOT follow it for 12:16.18.

With all of the breaks, it was impossible to get any sense of the rhythm of the race, plus it wasn't until about 600 meters to go when they realized how historically fast this race was.

The quality at ESPN has really reduced significantly since they had their big layoffs l think it was last year or year before last.

I guess it depends in the sophistication and interest of the audience they are talking to. Most people are not going to want a lap by lap discussion of a long race. For example, I am not going to watch every lap of the Indy 500 - if I wanted to watch people driving fast in a circle, I would take my lawn chair and a sixpack out to the Loop. BUT...I might watch the last lap, and if the announcers had any interesting tidbits, that would be mild interest to me.

At the very least, ESPN should either (1) show the entire race on ESPN3 or, (2) have the race continue via split-screen during commercials. It's just not that difficult.

Yeah, I don't watch them either, unless it is a sudden death playoff.

I've watched a little of the ESPN3 coverage. It's very bizarre how they keep going back and forth between meters and yards on their scorecards for the field events.

BTW what is the large silver spaceship looking building next to the hammer field? Is that their basketball gym? I went once to the NCAA's in Eugene decades ago, but I don't recall that building at all.

A fight for 2nd - the thrower from Cal just set a new collegiate record. But a good throw for Simpson-Sullivan - that should get her into the finals?

That was my guess, too, though I thought hammer was supposed to be able to be done entirely within Hayward Field. I'm not watching, so can't really say. I guess there are timing conflicts, when getting so many events done, that they went back outside for prelims?

https://hayward.uoregon.edu/about

They did a lot to update the Field and add to it (like the tower and museum).
