The Financial Times reported that the Guangdong province in China recently announced that it was planning on building more than two dozen BSL-3 labs and one BSL-4 lab over the course of the next five years.

But some Chinese officials have warned about poor security at existing facilities. In 2019 Yuan Zhiming, the director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology’s BSL-4 lab, wrote a review of the safety deficiencies in China’s laboratories. “Several high-level BSLs have insufficient operational funds for routine yet vital processes,” Yuan wrote, adding that maintenance costs were “generally neglected”.

“Due to the limited resources, some BSL-3 laboratories run on extremely minimal operational costs or in some cases none at all,” he said. In 2020, the central government passed a new law to improve national biosafety standards.

The report highlighted a well-known lab leak in China from 2004 where nine people were infected and one died after a SARS virus escaped.

However, the report noted a similar outbreak that happened in China just months before the current pandemic erupted that involved more than 6,000 people becoming infected with a bacterial disease after a leak at a vaccine plant.

In a little-noticed news report from November 2019, Reuters reported:

Brucellosis, a bacterial disease with flu-like symptoms, has infected more than 6,000 people in a single outbreak in northwestern China.

Usually caused by contact with animals, the outbreak in Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province, was due to a leak at a vaccine plant, according to Lanzhou’s health commission. People are still being treated at hospitals even though the outbreak happened a year ago.

The report comes as the narrative surrounding the origins of the coronavirus pandemic has shifted from calling the theory that it originated in lab a “conspiracy theory” to various top officials and news publications all of a sudden treating it as credible and highly plausible.

Dr. Steven Quay and UC Berkeley emeritus professor of physics Richard Muller explained in The Wall Street Journal over the weekend that the genomic structure of COVID-19 was unlike anything discovered in nature, which is the strongest evidence the coronavirus was altered in a lab.

The two explained that in gain-of-function research, a spike protein is altered for the purpose of making a virus more transmissible or lethal. A specific genomic sequence, CGG-CGG (known as “double CGG”), they said, has “never been found naturally” in “the entire class of coronaviruses that includes CoV-2.” They explained that natural processes could not create a sequence combination if it “isn’t present in any other virus.”

The two wrote:

Although the double CGG is suppressed naturally, the opposite is true in laboratory work. The insertion sequence of choice is the double CGG. That’s because it is readily available and convenient, and scientists have a great deal of experience inserting it. An additional advantage of the double CGG sequence compared with the other 35 possible choices: It creates a useful beacon that permits the scientists to track the insertion in the laboratory.

Now the damning fact. It was this exact sequence that appears in CoV-2. Proponents of zoonotic origin must explain why the novel coronavirus, when it mutated or recombined, happened to pick its least favorite combination, the double CGG. Why did it replicate the choice the lab’s gain-of-function researchers would have made?

So, the CCP has released onto the world a virus that now has the least preferred amino acid sequence of CGG. The lab-made virus that doesn’t infect bats, but is deadly to humans, will mutate and evolve into other deadlier viruses. And the CCP, unaccountable for its original killer, is building dozens more deadly research labs with the usual quality standards we have come to expect of “Made In China”. Fauci and Daszak must be proud, congratulations.

Quote:A World Health Organization advisory board member said Monday that China even now continues to operate a “massive cover-up” on the origins and spread of the coronavirus that caused the global pandemic.

“The Chinese have engaged in a massive cover-up that is going on until this day, involving destroying samples, hiding records, placing a universal gag order on Chinese scientists and imprisoning Chinese citizen journalists asking the most basic questions,” Jamie Metzl said Monday on Fox News.

“The more that China stonewalls, the more suspicious that it looks,” Metzl added. “We can’t give China a veto over whether or not we investigate the world’s worst pandemic in a century and then do everything we can to make everybody safe.”

Investigators are probing whether the coronavirus could have been leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China. Meanwhile, China is reportedly planning on launching 25 to 30 biosafety level three labs and one biosafety level four lab, the kind operated by the Wuhan Institute of Virology, over the next five years.

The idea that the virus could have escaped from a lab was largely dismissed last year as a conspiracy as the pandemic tightened its grip on the U.S., but the theory has been revived in recent weeks after a U.S. intelligence report found that several researchers at China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology were hospitalized in November 2019 with symptoms that resembled COVID-19 symptoms. China previously told the World Health Organization that the first person with symptoms similar to COVID-19 appeared in Wuhan the next month on December 8, 2019.

China is ranked substantially less prepared than the U.S. on biosecurity by the Global Health Security Index.

“There’s a reason why after a plane crashes, we do everything possible to understand what happened,” Metzl said. “If we don’t learn those lessons, there are other planes that are in the air. For all we know, the next pandemic is just around the corner and if we don’t understand and fix our biggest problems, we’re going to be at unnecessary risk. We have to get to the bottom of this, which means asking that tough questions and following the data wherever it leads.”

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) last week called the origins of the coronavirus the “worst cover-up in human history,” saying it is “more likely than not” that the pathogen’s spread was caused by a lab accident.

“You know, I do think it’s more likely than not it emerged out of the lab. Most likely accidentally,” McCaul said. “This is the worst cover-up in human history that we’ve seen, resulting in 3.5 million deaths, creating an economic devastation around the globe.”

House Republicans have called for a congressional probe into the origins of the virus, and some Democrats have joined them in urging for an investigation.

In January, the WHO delivered a rare rebuke to China, saying the country had refused to allow a team of scientists investigating the origins of the virus to enter the country.

Well if they are going to have more pandemics it makes sense to have the bio labs ready for the next vaccine.
