That is incorrect

Yea there were a lot of Utah Technical College at XXX campuses. I always thought one of them would have graduated to flagship status for Utah Tech. Most of them are still small regional tech locations that have adopted local names. Davis Applied Tech, Bridgerland Applied Tech, etc.

I always thought that Utah Valley University was a name that sold itself short. Especially if they wanted to attract more attention to itself beyond Utah County. Utah Valley wasn't even a recognized name on any state maps as a geographical location. To this day, UVU has the reputation of being a feeder school to students who want into BYU, but couldn't get in at the time.

IMHO UVU should have completed their plans they had when they were trying to get into the Big Sky and sponsored a FCS football team. Currently along the Wasatch Front (where the bulk of Utah's population resides) Dixie State gets more attention than Utah Valley. I believe football attracts more attention than UVU's college soccer team plan.

I was reading up on UVU to see about the old Utah Tech moniker and I found out UVU is the largest D1 university in the state of Utah. 39,931 students in 2018. Pretty crazy!

I think this works well for marketing. Just my opinion.

Most Tarleton fans don’t use use state when using the name and I wish the uniforms didn’t display the name. The name Tarleton is a unique brand and doesn’t need the state dragging behind it.
For the most part we do. Students and Alumni just call it "Tarleton". The athletic website is TarletonSports.com not TarletonStateSports

It is the Tarleton Athletics Hall of Fame
Tarleton Memorial Stadium

Football Jerseys say "Tarleton" or "Texans" - https://dbukjj6eu5tsf.cloudfront.net/tar...e_Pros.jpg

WBB says "Tarleton" - https://tarletonsports.com/images/2020/1...width=1600

Baseball- https://twitter.com/TarletonBase/status/...7559141376

Softball- https://tarletonsports.com/images/2020/1...width=1600

Tennis - https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E0Ke0eGXMAAS_3U.jpg

The only one that seems to hold onto the "Tarleton State" name is Men's Basketball. However, when you look at their Twitter - its "Tarleton MBB" https://twitter.com/tarletonmbb/

Everything says "Tarleton" not "Tarleton State". images on the website show players holding the basketball with the "Tarleton" brand open to the camera while "State" is cut off or covered.

And tarleton.edu calls you Junior Aggies...

Utah is the nation’s fastest-growing state, with an 18.4% population increase from 2010 to 2020.

UVU is the state’s largest university, and Southern Utah is the fastest-growing. Fall enrollment at SUU is projected to balloon to almost 14,000 and school administrators are warning of a housing shortage in Cedar City of as many as 1,000 beds:

https://www.fox13now.com/news/local-news...of-housing

Meanwhile St.George is booming and Dixie State is Utah’s second fastest-growing university. Enrollment increased by over 40% from 2015 to 2020, currently exceeds 12,000 and is expected to grow to over 16,000 by 2025:

https://www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/archiv...tegic-plan

Couple all that with the continuing rapid growth in Texas and Arizona and it’s fair to say the WAC is better-positioned to benefit from current demographic trends than any other D1 conference.

When looked at from the perspective of growth in area population and enrollments (Utah Tech, SUU, the Texas schools) an FBS future does not appear completely unlikely. It is certainly more likely than the 2013 WAC even remaining as a conference at any division or that same conference being a healthy and proactive D1 conference like it now is on 07-01-2021.

RE: Dixie State's new name...
UVU and BYU definitely have a strong symbiosis. Not many places anywhere have almost 90,000 students studying or living within a few miles.

While it is true that St George is one of the fastest growing places in the nation, and Dixie will continue to grow, I think it will cap out at around 30k. It will not replicate UVU growth. UVU is rapidly approaching 50,000 with little sign of letting up.

Dixie will only grow with St George and it will always have a limited draw from the Wasatch due to Utah specific dynamics. Dixie is a St George school more than a Utah school. While the st George Temple expansion was long over due, when it is complete in 2022 it could add fuel to the St George growth.

SUU could probably reach 20K eventually depending on how big St George gets. Cedar is booming, but nothing like St George itself. Dixie has already established themselves as THE school for Southern Utah and the Arizona Strip and nearly all future student growth, but more importantly, new academics programs and graduate programs will all go to Dixie. SUU will become even more arts focused.

This is the core of the WAC, and long term, I think these schools will play an outsized role in its future.

I didn't realize Dixie was a tech school. Do they offer a bunch of Engineering programs?

Dixie/Utah Tech is on a collision course for moving to FBS in football. I'm certain it's in their long-term plan. They do have a beautiful campus and are a booming university. Having football will help them get more visibility and I believe will allow them to pass Utah Valley in notoriety, if it hasn't already. I saw that Dixie is on a few future BYU football schedules. I remember Dixie when they were called the Rebels (dropped for obvious reasons) and then eventually the Red Storm. I never understood why the Red Storm nickname was changed. It didn't seem to last very long.

The combined St. George and Cedar City metro areas have a large enough population to support one FBS-caliber program but not two. And I agree that in the long run Utah Tech will be more likely than Southern Utah to move up.

Should have gone with Utah University of Technology, Arts, and Humanities (UUTAH).

Dixie St has already received more press along the Wasatch front than UVU. I believe it's because one plays football.

If I am reading this right, Step 10 is now complete and Dixie State is literally a Utah Legislature approval away. The Utah Legislature does not convene again until January 2022 (if I am not mistaken) so this was done in ample time to get on their purview.

Smart move to rebrand and good choice of name. The legislature’s approval should be no more than a formality. Bold prediction: if Utah Tech keeps growing and plays its cards right I could see it being a candidate to join the MWC a decade from now.

The Dixie State name change to Utah Tech just passed the Utah Legislature. I don't think the Utah governor will veto it (he hasn't shown any desire to stand up to the legislator)
