Utah is the nation’s fastest-growing state, with an 18.4% population increase from 2010 to 2020.

UVU is the state’s largest university, and Southern Utah is the fastest-growing. Fall enrollment at SUU is projected to balloon to almost 14,000 and school administrators are warning of a housing shortage in Cedar City of as many as 1,000 beds:

Meanwhile St.George is booming and Dixie State is Utah’s second fastest-growing university. Enrollment increased by over 40% from 2015 to 2020, currently exceeds 12,000 and is expected to grow to over 16,000 by 2025:

Couple all that with the continuing rapid growth in Texas and Arizona and it’s fair to say the WAC is better-positioned to benefit from current demographic trends than any other D1 conference.

When looked at from the perspective of growth in area population and enrollments (Utah Tech, SUU, the Texas schools) an FBS future does not appear completely unlikely. It is certainly more likely than the 2013 WAC even remaining as a conference at any division or that same conference being a healthy and proactive D1 conference like it now is on 07-01-2021.

Utah's also getting a lot of people seeking to escape the higher taxes and cost of living on the West Coast. Most of that increase over the last several years has been people fleeing California. It's not surprising that Salt Lake City is politically blue while Salt Lake County is bluish purple and the rest of the state is red.

It escapes me why Californians leave their state because of California's poor policies, and then still end up voting for those same policies in their adopted state. Same thing is happening here in Arizona.

According to this article, some of the names that could be considered are:

-Utah Technological University
(It will probably be shortened to Utah Tech by sportswriters.)
-Utah University of Technology & Arts
(UUTA????)
-Utah University of Technology & Humanities
(I think that's even worse than UUTA.)
-Utah Polytechnic University
(Well there is a Cal Poly... so Utah Poly? Sounds like an American Girl Doll.)
-Utah Institute of Technology
(I'm on the fence with this one. I can see haters using UTI as a joke.)
-Utah University of Technology
(I'm sensing a theme.)

Most of these would work for a school name. And I suspect that sportswriters will stick with "Utah Tech" if one of the above variants is used.

This is priceless, it only goes to show how misinformed the haters are...

Anyone that thinks a University in Utah named Dixie State had any affiliating with the Confederacy... "because its connotation with the Civil War Confederacy" is a direct correlation to the failure of US higher education.

I do agree that Utah Technological University rebranding will go a long way to enhance the Universities image.

But disagree with doing it because some IDIOTS that don't know that Utah is not in the south.

There are three Utah cities ranked in the Top 10 most overvalued markets in America to live in. Yeah. No surprise there. Salt Lake City, Provo, and Ogden--all college towns.

St. George is still affordable, though........for now.

Ignore the URL wording, it was an update to an earlier article when it was reported that there might not be enough votes.

It’s done. The bill to change the name has been signed by the governor and is now law. However despite the newspaper headline implying that the change takes effect immediately, information previously posted on the university’s website states that it will officially take effect on July 1, 2022.

Waiting until the year is over with to roll out the branding. No sense in doing it now in the middle of a sports season. Makes sense.

Raise your hand if any of you knew Dixie State was in Utah the first time you heard about the school. Any hands raised? Anyone? Cancel culture my a$$. Every man, woman and child that hears Dixie State for the first time would assume the school is located in the Deep South.

RE: Dixie State's new name...
So since Utah Tech is dropping the Dixie name, can another school somewhere else license the name?

Utah Tech isn't completely dropping the Dixie name, as UTU's main campus in St. George will be known as the Dixie Campus. This will distinguish it from the extension campus in the nearby town of Hurricane known as the Hurricane Education Center, and any future extension campuses the university may open.

It may seem like this is just a minor bone thrown to the name-change opponents, but when you think about it, every future student who attends UTU in St. George will be curious why the main campus is called the Dixie Campus instead of the St. George campus. When they find out or are told the answer, the unique history of what "Dixie" meant (and means) in the Southern Utah context will be passed along.

The first time I heard of them was when they announced the WAC move. I was confused why the WAC was going to the South East until I looked them up.

-- Louisiana Tech (most use the shorter "LA TECH")

-- Texas Tech (TTU)

Coincidentally, Tennessee Tech was once called the College of Dixie.

For the final name, I'm disappointed that the legislature went with Utah Tech University instead of a more formal name like Utah Technological U. or Utah Institute (or University) of Technology.

I knew that Dixie State is in SW Utah; then again, as someone who follows Division II sports, I have some reasons for knowing this.
