The big winner: reality-based readers. This should end the ridiculous 16-24 team coast-to-coast fantasy posts.

To be fair, this actually gives credence that there were some legit legs to this story (at least regarding Boise State).

Boise State just isn’t that good anymore. Never a suitable destination for their olympic sports anyway.

Looks like the AAC could be stuck at 11 for a long time. Aresco needs to get to work on that rule change.

If they need an affiliate to tide them over until the picture post-2024 is clear, there are several available.

The big loser is C-USA, as UTEP wont be tapped to replace Boise State.

One could say SDSU is runner up. Without Boise moving, they are stuck too.

That might be less likely than Boise. Waaaaaay too many issues. Nobody is leaving a conference for a temporary affiliate status---so that means it must be an indy. UConn is a hard no for obvious reasons. That leaves UMass, Liberty, and NM State. Then---you'll either have to buy out a bunch of indy games in order to immediately free up their schedule---or---you can wait several years for their schedule to open up---which would put you around the mid-2020's---and it would be sort of a "whats the point" endeavor once you get that far down the road.

No. It looks like the AAC is essentially an 11 team football/basketball league for the forseeable future.....unless Aresco finally decides to invite VCU.....04-cheers

RE: Game Over: AAC shuts the door on Boise
I’m not sure the story is as much “AAC shuts door on Boise” as it is “Boise decides moves to AAC not viable.” Boise couldn’t find a Western home for non-football sports so the move wasn’t possible, the article says. I find it a little hard to believe the WAC would be uninterested so I assume that was more Boise being uninterested in the WAC.

Either way, it’s the right decision. The AAC doesn’t have a guaranteed future with its current alignment and it really is too far. Long term, the MWC is a solid home. 25 years ago Boise was transitioning into FBS and has since won 3 BCS/NY6 bowls, had multiple perfect seasons, peaked at #2 in the AP poll, and received countless hours of television coverage. Not bad for a school that was semi-recently a junior college.

I think Boise State meant an acceptable home. I think their Big West interest has to do with California recruiting, but it has to be balanced against horrible basketball. The WCC was the real target, as that would be almost a sideways move, but they were not considered compatible by the WCC, who politely told them "CoVid-19 put things on hold" rather than directly blow them off. They then, countered by asking the AAC if they could join in all sports, that they were willing to accept the travel (the AAC meets the "acceptable" criteria), but the AAC decided they couldn't do that.

Boise State leaves out the word "acceptable" as they are not wanting to offend anyone, not be taken by the WAC or Big Sky as those conferences not being acceptable, as they didn't even approach them.

BTW, I talked with a few different Big Sky school associated folks, and they told me the conference would jump at Boise State even as an associate in some obscure sport. It would be a huge thing for most of the schools. Something to keep in mind come 2025, should the AAC and Boise State get hot again; that pretty much any sport the AAC, as a condition for full invite, asks Boise State to leave behind, would have a home waiting in the Big Sky (e.g., women's soccer or volleyball).

The AAC stretched the truth a little too, as we know from the emails the talks went on into the fall. "Pre-Covid" seems to entail a lot of time period where Covid was everywhere, but that is what the AAC says.

*It would be hypocritical for me to say I haven't looked at this through green-colored glasses. There is a solid add right on the doorstep of AAC.*

Having said that, I think that train has made its last stop. There is no way the NCAA gives AAC an "infinite" extension and I don't think the CCGs will go away. Why? The CCGs are buckets and buckets of money for conferences and networks. No one is tossing that away.

It would also throw college football into complete chaos. If I can get along w/out 12+ teams, then why the hell am I letting 3+ at my table? And conf commissioners are not going to let one conference do it's own thing.

Who said anything about getting rid of CCG’s? The only thing the AAC will suggest is a rule that allows conferences with more than 9 members to play a divisionless CCG without completing a full conference round robin. Such a rule would INCREASE the conference options for a CCG—not get rid of CCG’s. As for not needing 12 teams to have a CCG—-that ship sailed with the 2016 rule change that allowed the 10 team Big12 to have a CCG. Under the current rule, a minimal 8 team conference can have a CCG.

As for expansion options—-I think a few things are clear. Its been two full years since UConn announced that they would be leaving the AAC. If the AAC presidents believed any G5 in the east was a great option—-they would already have issued the invite. Instead, they are talking to schools 2000 miles away. That tells me the presidents will stand pat and continue to wait for a clear and obvious value adding candidate to emerge. Thus—-unless BYU, Boise, or Army have a sudden change of heart—I suspect the AAC will be at 11 for as long as it takes for a school to develop into a clear and obvious choice. That could be 5 years or 5 decades. No way to know.

RE: Game Over: AAC shuts the door on Boise
I don't believe it isn't in the Autonomy 5's best interest to keep the current championship rules anyway. The ACC and SEC can just get rid of divisions permanently and have non divisional teams play each other more often. I don't know if the ACC had any rhyme or reason as to who played who in the regular season but having divisionless definitely works in the ACC's favor even if Notre Dame isn't a full football member. The "two best teams" would play in the ACC Championship even if they are in the "same division" (and the ACC divisions don't make geographical sense anyway). Jim Delany had in the past talked about getting rid of divisions. It would be nice for Penn State to get another crack at Ohio State in the championship game once in a while. You can say beat them in the regular season but Wisconsin lost to OSU before in the regular season, why do they get a 2nd crack at them? One year Auburn and Georgia played in the SEC Championship. It's not like rematches never happen.

RE: Game Over: AAC shuts the door on Boise
Before Covid-19, I was convinced the Big Ten was going to push to get rid of divisions and change the CCG rules in 2022. The main reason was 2021 was supposed to be the end of a 6-year rotation where every team played everybody else at least twice and once at home. 2022 was going to be the start of a new 6-year rotation so that seemed like a logical year to dump the divisional format and go to a new format with 5 permanent rivals.

COVID-19 messed that up in 2020 and now I am not so confident anymore whats going to happen but I still believe its in the Big Ten's best interest to dump their divisions sooner rather than later.

Yes, this isn't your older brother's Boise. They struggle to win the MW these days.

I hope Dodd is right, and I thank Aresco for not caving in to Boise's desire to join with all sports.

Bill Dazzle now makes calls to "his people" to arrange a meeting with Mike Aresco and officials from Appalachian State (football only) and VCU (all sports but football).
