A look back at the Big-12 expansion episode
AAC schools making the cut to the final eleven candidates were Houston, UCF, USF, Cincinnati, Tulane, SMU, and UConn. ECU, Memphis, and Temple were previously rejected.

Other schools making the cut were Rice, BYU, Colorado State, and AFA.

Without question, Houston was rejected not because the Cougars were not good enough; the problem was Houston was too good and correctly judged as a threat.

OU President David Boren, without consulting his Big-12 colleagues, went public that the Big-12 was psychologically challenged and needed to expand. It set off a public relations disaster and set in motion a fiasco that took on a life of its own that the Big-12 could not stop.

For those ten AAC schools hoping for a Big-12 invitation, I think the only way to attain P6 status is to continue to build the AAC conference, the reason I put this thread on the board. The fact that Boise State, SDSU, and Colorado State are willing to join AAC if invited tells me that they have no fear that the current AAC will lose any schools to a P5 conference via expansion.

DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN THE BIG 12 WAS GOING TO EXPAND? By Jeff Trotter, ESPN, June 28, 2017.

"During league meetings last June, the expansion push lost almost all momentum, especially after (OU President) Boren was informed that adding the likes of Houston or BYU or Cincinnati would not deliver the lucrative conference network for the Big 12 he so desired."

BIG 12 PASSES ON EXPANSION FOR NOW. HERE'S WHY, USA Today, By Richard Johnson, October 17, 2016.

"The Cougars looked like a slam dunk."

"But a lot of what makes them attractive also makes them dangerous."

"Former Oklahoma Coach Barry Switzer said "Don't give them (Houston) creditability. I've always said if I could get the top 30 players that came out of Houston every year, I'd play for the national championship every year."

"Hell no," Switzer said when asked about the idea of empowering Houston."

"You can call it scared, you can call it pragmatic. But if Houston got into the Big 12, it'd further muddy the waters of a high-stakes recruiting area. Why should Texas, Oklahoma, TCU, or Baylor want to validate more competition in the state?"

RE: A look back at the Big-12 expansion episode
OU President Boren was wrong in suggesting that the B12 was “psychologically challenged” by having 10 members. Having fewer members has allowed the CFP distributed revenue to be much higher on a per school basis. The B12 has gained stability by having higher media per school payouts than the PAC and ACC. The NCAA also gave an exception to the B12, allowing them to play a CCG with only 10 teams. This CCG strengthens the top program’s schedule while adding more revenue.

Oklahoma has thrived in the new B12. Hard to see Oklahoma wanting any expansion now (unless it’s with a P5 team...which won’t happen).

If Switzer is correct and Houston was such a threat because of Houston recruiting, how come Houston got progressively worse, not better, over the 20 years they were with the big boys in the SWC?

Yes, the real issue for the Big 12 was the lack of the "13th data point", which was hurting them on CFP selection Sunday.

Getting the NCAA rule changed to allow them a CCG basically put that to rest.

Agree. The BXII had no intention of adding anyone. It was all leverage to used in negotiations with the networks to end the pro-rata clause. I have heard a couple ADs from finalists say it became pretty apparent they were being played all along on the “final interview” in Dallas.

I was about to defend U of H, because I remember lots of success for them in the SWC era. In their 20 years in the SWC, they won four conference championships and played in seven bowl games. I thought they were more successful than that. I know they were on probation during the height of the Run-and-Shoot era. Their best teams were on probation.

With their location and facilities (vastly improved over SWC or C-USA days), I believe if they were in the Big 12 that they would achieve the same type of success as TCU: playing in a bowl game most years and competing for a championship every few years. There are PLENTY of players in Greater Houston to go around. Their talent level would improve, but the other schools would still be able to recruit Houston.

Houston wasn't a good idea for the Big 12, but it might work for another league...the ACC. That conference gains by siphoning off players from more notable Big 12 programs.

To be fair, that was a long time ago and UH has a better financial base now.

And in those days, how many programs in the SWC were truly good anyway? That league broke apart because of TV money, but outside of a few schools, most of the SWC needed political help not to be relegated.

That and I don't think Switzer was implying that UH would supplant the powers, just that their presence in the Big 12 would make their job tougher with no real benefit.

I would think it’s a part of due diligence. You do this because what might happen (or not) if you didn’t apply. Or, in the Big XII’s case, there was somehow found a cause for expansion, even if this was pretty much always a ruse.

What was disgusting about the whole thing was the colossal waste of time all the “applicant” schools spent on this thing for what little more the conference got from it. The CCG, I thought, was passed at this point.

I am in the camp that believes the Big Ten leaked a list of expansion applicants to shake someone it really wanted loose from their current tree. That was Nebraska. There was an endgame. What the Big XII did? Went further than it had to, and made it too public. A cheap farce.
