Hey Ken,

Everything you said is a reasonable and valid point that I agree with.

Bob said that if it were him he would have beaten the doctor up and that UM is a cult that he isn't susceptible to. He implied the victims are weak. It shows a fundamental lack of understanding for victims of sexual abuse. It's gross as hell.

Dear dansplaining,
Thanks for that clarification of your statement. I can now see your point. However, we all get too excited, emotional, or upset, occasionally and that leads to outbursts that others do not understand.

Not what I said. I stand by what I said. To cover up what happened and to defend Bo, it would take a sick, twisted cult. My heart goes out to all the victims but ESPECIALLY Matt! He was 10. He couldn't defend himself obviously. However, I remember being an 18, 19, 20 year old in college and I mean this sincerely without bragging...a nerdy middle aged doctor would have gotten ROCKED if I felt I was getting raped, scholarship be damned. I suspect (hope) I'm not the only one who feels that way.

No one is "victim blaming." I am on the side of the victims! I only know what I would do if put in that horrendous situation. Both my parents are retired counselors who have their Masters degrees from U-M. I was very fortunate growing up. Not everyone was so lucky. I mean, there are over 900 victims in this tragedy and likely THOUSANDS more who were able to stave off this criminal. Bottom line, the enemy is the U-M athletics department which would enable such behavior, the doctor, and Bo Schembechler. Just use your head and quit trying to impress people with your over the top wokeness. We are all equally disgusted by this.

Heather Dinich on ESPN explained the proposal EXACTLY that way. 1-4 will be the top ranked conference champions, which this year would have included Oklahoma and of course left the Irish playing in the opening round.

I like the basic concept, the near miss teams like Georgias, Floridas et al that now play in bowl games without their NFL draft picks will now have their full rosters engaged. I just wonder how many of the additional 8 games ESPN will buy and place in the secondary bowls they own. It could be bad news for the MAC and the rest of the G5.

YES! Those 12 teams will be playing for a national championship instead of teams 5 - 12 playing a bowl game. Big difference.

A 12-team CFP does diminish the non-CFP bowls. HOWEVER, remember bowl organizers (which are charitable, and do good for the community) and ESPN still wants those games. ESPN LOVES live events (better from re-runs, etc.).

One thing I like it that I can see the rights fees say doubling or even more. E.g., the opening round of 4 games, would be over maybe two days, maybe big name programs for different parts of the country (e.g., PSU vs. Georgia). Those games draw really well as there will be EIGHT teams playing and they will attract a lot of viewers.

I will leave it to DP to decide how the invidual schools will spend the extra money. It is a big windfall for the CONFERENCES which will have a team (or teams) in the CFP. They then distribute to the member schools.

In the grand scheme of things, does having a 12 team college football playoff amount to a hill of beans? This country's obsession with 18-22 year old young men playing sports is part of the reason why we have these scandals on all these different college campuses. JHC! Can't we just leave well enough alone?

Great post Steve!

I had forgotten that ESPN bought a bunch of bowls because they attract more viewers than NBA games at that time of the season. I was assuming existing bowl games would be occupied by this format, a zero sum game of sorts. You, however, have changed my viewpoint. The Camelia, Quick Lane, Utah Potato bowls and such would not have existed previously without a certain demand and this playoff will not change that.

This proposal won't eliminate the spirited but less elite games that Detroit, Montgomery, etc... really enjoy hosting. It will, also, not burst the bubble of those higher profile non CFP bowls where possible NFL draft picks sit out. Win-Win.

RE: Monday Musings June Edition
It's Monday so I'm musing about:

Heard this a.m. that nationally undergrad enrollment was down 4.9% in spring. Grad enrollment up 4.4%.

How this plays out is that some colleges we take small hits; others big hits.

Hope we did okay.

Many Skilled trades apprenticeships open right now to high school graduates. Wayne County Sheriff is holding a job fair for deputies anyone over 18 can apply. Lot of good paying jobs not requiring college uniquely open right now that were not ten years ago. I would hypothesize that is a reason undergrad attendance is down and will continue to go down until that trend changes.

I essentially agree with you.

HOWEVER, it depends if the associates or bachelor degree is a wise career path.

An associates degree in psychology is of little value. An associates degree in a technology presumably is very valuable. An associates degree which is a prerequisite for a 4-year degree is worthwhile (good way to save money - if one plans to do grad work saving money the first two years might not be a bad thing.).

And yes there is now a big emphasis on graduate degree in many areas and enrollment is increasing.. Lot of therapy positions (e.g.. physical, occupational, speech and language, etc.) are advanced degrees. I assume more and more teachers are getting grad degrees. Business is a MBA haven. Lot of other fields have always required a masters or beyond (e.g., social work, clinical or school psych, etc.).

.

It's taken until mid-June and this edition of Monday Musings, but UDM finally is done with Gilbert or vice versa.

If anyone wondered what purgatory is like, this is it. UDM WBB descended to the netherworld and finally got released from it.

Lot of other fields have always required a masters or beyond (e.g., social work, clinical or school psych, etc.).

.

The Fan hit the nail on the head once again! I can honestly say from first hand experience that I know auto mechanics, plumbers, welders and HVAC guys who gross over $100K a year, in Michigan that is REALLY good money. Unlike many recent college grads they are not whining about their student debt even while that degree indeed provides all the "prestige they can eat". Also when was the last time you heard of the aforementioned professions losing their jobs due to "offshoring"?

Steve you are spot on as well. The educational model of the past needs refreshing for sure. As you alluded to, a liberal arts degree is unpractical for most.
