Ugh. Certainly not breaking any news here, but three-point defense is going to be a major Achilles' heel again this season.

For sure. What is especially concerning is that most of the threes were made off the catch, not the bounce. The Liberty game last year was very similar to the one last night.

Trying to be optimistic about last night.Hopf looked good. I thought he and Devault were effective on limited time. Scotty has got to change the defensive scheme. They need to tighten up on the shooters and not worry about penetration. Everybody is looking to shoot 3s as an offesive strategy

Hopf is yet another "steal" of a recruit by Scotty! My gut tells me that he's going to be really good.

Crowd was disappointing -- Scotty works so hard to promote the program, and the support from this city, which supposedly loves college sports so much, is lame.

Free admission and very sparse turnout. Disappointing. Very disappointing game also. A few good spots but more things to be negative about. I'm trying desperately to be optimistic. Its only one game but we have many really tough games in Nov/Dec. I should stop here before I think about what our won-loss record will look like when the conference schedule begins.

Yeah, it's good stuff, and the program is getting a lot of publicity out of this.

What a great video, not just because its about BU, but what a high level of analysis. The fact that you can get that free is amazing. Trouble is, its awfully good scounting.

11:25 left in the second half with the Knights down 51-39 to Murray St. Personally, my most positive takeaway from today so far is the competitiveness and fearlessness Garrett Tipton has brought off the bench. Would love to see more minutes for him based off his performance so far

RE: 2021-22 Season
Hard to find too much positive to talk about from the Murray game. The "pass-first" offense doesn't seem to be generating many easy buckets. Curt Hopf looks like he is going to be a good addition to the team. But what about Ben Johnson? Is he injured or what? Devault and Thelen only get a few minutes on the floor. At times we're out there with 4 guards.

Yes Ben Johnson has been ill and didn’t make the road trips this week. Scotty expects him on the swing west.

As far as the pass first offense, it wasn’t executed tonight. Only 2 ball reversals in the game.

How does a veteran team like this not reverse the ball? Maybe it wasn't there....18TO, 9 steals, 26 points for MSU
Seems like we are shooting a lot of 3's
We miss Pedro badly

I do like how Tipton and Hopf are looking, but, yeah, this team desperately needs another playmaker a la Pedro.

Insert usual disclaimer [here] (Scotty's forgotten more than I'll ever know, yada, yada)

BUT, I just don't understand why DeVault can't get more playing time. He got 5 minutes Saturday (apprx. 9:13-4:40 first half) It was the best 5 minute stint of the game for BU. DeVault hit one of two 3's, both the shots were very good looks. He made no serious errors on defense and had no turnovers. He was successful in stretching the MSU defense. Devault was removed during a timeout with BU having its biggest lead of the game, up7. Thelan came in and committed a TO and a foul almost immediately. BU didn't score for the rest of the half and not until about 17:00 mark in the second half. DeVault never got back off the bench.

Contrast Devault with Wieland and Thelan. Weiland played 13 minutes, had 0 points, 3 TOs, 4 fouls and 1 rebound. Thelan played 9 minutes had 3 points on a banked in 3 pointer. I can't help but think that your looking at a different game, if Devault gets the 22 minutes Wieland and Thelan got.

RE: 2021-22 Season
Well, that plethora of turnovers cost the game, but at least that looked more like a "typical" Bellarmine performance (which we've been spoiled to watch over the last dozen seasons).

Three-point defense was better, but that big guy Tass for the Gaels was a load on the inside.

Have to think that last year's squad would've defeated St. Mary's, but onward and upward. Good to see my man Hopf getting a lot of "on the job training."

RE: 2021-22 Season
Second half turnovers were so frustrating because they were so unneccesary. Betz and Penn have to know better. Penn was great of course. I would have liked to see him kick out to Flemming a few more times. Frankly, I was not impressed by St. Mary's. We made a below average big man look like an all American. We did miss Thelan on the defensive end or at least we missed his five fouls.

The game was exhibit 1 in the need for some bigger stronger interior defenders.

On a different note, I liked the SMC radio/streaming commentators. The closest they ever came to criticizing the refs was saying that a player did not like the call.

Agree with you on a couple of things. St. Mary didn't look that great. St. Mary's has been Gonzaga's main competition in the WCC in the last several years, and from what I saw last night and Gonzaga's game this week against Texas, Gonzaga is light years better than St. Mary. Second point is I get tired of Mark Bugg doing nothing but complaining about officiating.
