One scam deserves another?

Really helping the poor?

Bill Maher weighs in.

He made a joke about Lori Loughlin. He's been known to do that, since he's a comedian.

No, he made a joke about higher education using Lori Laughlin as a part of his running social commentary about current events.

So what are your thoughts about the content, that Maher speaks to re US higher education and the connection to driving “income inequality”?

RE: 500% increase in tuition cost
Dear Cucumber Salad,
Part of the huge cost of a college education is the fact of thirty years of state legislatures cutting back on the amounts of money they used to give to the public universities. Part of that probably had to do with the increases of student enrollment that skyrocketed with the Vietnam War. Let's face it though, if one wants a better life, and a better paying job, for most, college is the route to take.

Maher Comments that since 1985 10 years after the end Vietnam war college tuition has escalated 500%.

How has that occurred if state and federal government hadn’t funded public universities?

Other than obnoxious levels of student debt what has been the end product of the 500% tuition increase?

As a result why is the “income gap” reportedly widening?

Did you watch the segment? I watched the segment & I'm forming my opinion based on what he said and not Fox News' interpretation of what he said. I long ago stopped trusting their interpretations of facts & news.

I agree with his overarching point that the cost of college is rising at a ridiculous rate while offering less real world applications of their degrees.

Society is also requiring degrees for far too many jobs now. Forcing people to go into debt for a degree that often doesn't really get you anywhere is a bad system. Not sure I know a great solution.

Side note...I forget the exact % Maher mentioned, but it's alarming how many A's colleges give out now compared to 25+ years ago. Something like 15% to now 45%. Kids aren't getting that much smarter. It's just much easier to get A's now. Colleges know what students/parents want & they give it to them as long as they get paid.

RE: 500% increase in tuition cost
Dear Broncos,
To go along with what I said earlier, in the 1975-76 school year the State legislature paid 68% of what public universities needed. Today they pay 23% of what is needed. That's three times less.

That's because "what is needed" has gone up so much. Public funding is more today in inflation-adjusted dollars than it was in the 1960s.

This data isn't super recent, but everything i can see shows the trend continuing.

For something more recent, 47/50 states decreased their funding per student from 2015-2018, even with most having a modest increast from 2015-16
