RE: NCAA Baseball Tournament
The home plate umpire in tonight's game is the worst yet. Missed 3 calls-- all in favor of Rocker and Vandy-- in the first inning. Even the broadcasters couldn't understand how he could have missed them so badly. On the so-called stikeout of Logan Allan (after one gifted strike call earlier in the count), Kyle Peterson commented that Allan didn't budge because the ball was nowhere near the strikezone.

Oh, BTW, MSU is up 3-0 after 2 1/2. Bednar hasn't been great (3 BBs in 2 IP), but Rocker has not only been uncharacteristically wild (save multiple times by the up), but he's been hit hard-- even the outs.

Vandy's fielding percentage on leadoff hitters must be world-class dismal.

Bednar has retired 9 in a row, and though Rocker had a dominant fourth inning (striking out the side in order), MSU is battering him in the 5th inning. 5-0 Cow Bells and still batting....and Rocker leaves the mound for the last time in his college career in one of his worst outings in his career.

Yep.

Bednar's now got a no-hitter through 5.

Because of Bednar's control issues the first two innings he's already exceeded his pitch count. They may let him start the 6th inning, but I suspect it's going to be Sims the rest of the way.

First NCAA title for Mississippi State in any sport, leaving Ole Miss as the only school in the SEC without an NCAA team title now I believe. In fact, that might have been the first NCAA team title for any D1 school in Mississippi (USM doesn't have one - I may be missing an obvious school though).

Barely a month ago a month ago (on May 26), Ole Miss women golfers won the NCAA title. How quickly we forget. :-)

(This was the first-ever Ole Miss womens title, and (according to the article linked above), the first national title for Ole Miss since 1962.

From the Ole Miss football Wikipedia page:

Quote:Ole Miss has been selected national champion three times by NCAA-designated major selectors in 1959, 1960 and 1962. Ole Miss claims these three championships. The two major wire service polls of the time (AP Poll and Coaches' Poll), named Syracuse, Minnesota, and USC as the national champions in those years, respectively.

I was looking at the 2020-21 NCAA manual which only listed national titles prior to this athletic year.

Wow, it's been a good month-plus for the Magnolia State.

RE: NCAA Baseball Tournament
Back in the pre-BCS days, Ole Miss won three split poll football NCs (1959, 1960, 1962), but those are not recognized by the NCAA as official. One involved Rice. 1960 team was undefeated, but so was Minnesota, most polls were based on regular season only, and they went for Minnesota. Minnesota lost the Rose Bowl, Ole Miss beat Rice in Sugar, and a few that decided NC after bowls went for Ole Miss. Of the three, the 1960 claim is probably the strongest.

ETA: Just thinking, how long has it been since Rice played a late season football game with national championship implications?

Must be competing with the clown behind the plate in the O’s v Astros game tonight. Pitches inside the zone are balls. Pitches outside the zone are called strikes. Brent Strom ejected in the T1.

Wow, it's been a good month-plus for the Magnolia State.

Checking the NCAA Championships summary (through June 2020), I see that 39 schools -- including some D-II & D-III schools -- had won just one D1 team title.

(Regarding individual titles, Rice athletes have won 44 national crowns over the years: 4 in men's tennis, the rest in track & field (5 each in men's and women's indoor, 21 in men's outdoor and 9 in women's outdoor.)

Mississippi State joins Rice (2003), Coastal Carolina (2016) and Wichita State (1989) as schools whose only NCAA D-I national team championship is baseball.

Pitt also should be on that list (they have 5 football titles but do those really count?). Some people in this thread claim maybe Rutgers too as they have a 1949 fencing NCAA title but that sport might not have been considered an NCAA sport back then?

The whole should football count or not is a gray area I guess. If it's a year in which there were multiple teams claiming a national title, then that's one thing. But the 1976 Pitt football season in which they were 12-0 and consensus national champs is pretty much a slam dunk in my eyes.

He's been climbing up the draft board, but still predicted to go the second half of the first round. Leiter and Rocker are Top 5 picks, and Madden likely Top 10.
