Matt, why moves would you have made as commissioner back then?

And each of the B1G schools are now much richer because of it. There should be zero regret.

Rooting for men in suits lining their pockets must be so exciting.

RE: What was better about college sports when you were college age?
Selfishly, my team lost 6 football games in my four years of college, winning one national championship. Three of those losses were to Miami. Basketball was almost as good, winning two conference championships and losing in a heartbreaking upset in the 1988 national championship game. Those were great days.

The Big 8 was a thing. The world was a better place when the Big 8 was in it.

I miss Astroturf, 1:30 kickoffs, games primarily on radio, and spartan facilities. I don't really miss those things (well, maybe 1:30 kickoffs), but they bring back positive memories. I do like the exposure and the facilities that increased media money have brought. Things were not purer then, but they were simpler. The money is much bigger now.

I always wanted a playoff. I never thought I'd miss the poll system. But I kinda do. Just win your conference, go to a good bowl game and win it, and let the chips fall where they may.

I miss the 80's.

Oh the irony, because rooting for women stuffing their g-strings is exciting to a lot of losers.

Maybe this is the B1G equivalent of the Full Monty!

I miss the idea of cheering on, and against, my peers rather than for or against people who were toddlers or not even born yet at the time I was in school. I think all of us can relate to that.

I will miss the atmosphere in the stadium parking lot and field, now home to beautiful new dorms.

I miss watching games with so many friends in the student section.

I miss the lack of piped in music and the sound of the band.

I miss (but don't at all want to go back to) being in a conference at the time where I had friends or relatives at the majority of the other members. That was fun talking trash to them... on AOL Instant Messenger.

I miss all the coaching strategy that went on back in my college days from the mid to late 1980s. Back then, college football teams ran a variety of offenses and defenses that made the game a lot more interesting. Now it seems that everyone runs the same offense over and over again. Same with defense. Watch tackling back then compared to now.

As a Cuse fan:

A great diverse schedule as an Indy
3 hour games
Players you followed for 4 years
Laying on the couch listening to the game with my Dad
Attending an occasional live game with my Dad
Outdoor game, 60-70 degree weather and an upset victory
Not learning crap in school that week before a big opponent or better yet a TV game

Things I hated:
A TV game maybe once a year
No replays of games if you missed a game on the radio
Sitting in crumbling Archbold Stadium on a raw, cold day
We never tailgated

RE: What was better about college sports when you were college age?
The Pre-NFL SWC was something really special

Everyone in the state had their team that they were affiliated with either because they were your alma mater, or your family school or they represented your home town, your part of the state or even your religious affiliation. Almost everybody had a connection to their favorite team.

Which made the rivalries insane. It was East vs West, North vs South, town vs town, urban vs rural, religion vs religion and any combo thereof.

Church on Sunday and work the Monday after was always full of tragedy and triumph as you faced your neighbors and coworkers around the collection plate and water cooler as bragging rights for the next year were made.

It was a special moment in time and it’s never ever to be repeated

Damn you must be old. I can't even remember Syracuse not playing at the Carrier Dome. I had to look up Archbold Stadium, never heard of it before. It did close after I was born so you're not that old.

You mean we still have tackling? Damn, I haven't seen any. I thought they just bumped people out of bounds or slowed progress until the whistle is blown. Next you'll be telling me we still cover pass receivers!

I gotta here this story

It wasn’t that uncommon. My mind went straight to Dan Kendra, a top QB recruit from the Lehigh Valley (Bethlehem Catholic) who initially committed to Penn State, then signed with Florida State. It didn’t seem to matter that the kid’s dad was an assistant under Bowden. The Lehigh Valley may be bigger Nits fans than Happy Valley itself. And, this was before things like Rivals and other recruiting sites, or before switching was as common. You better believe it did not go over well when he changed his mind on Penn State. It was a top story in the region’s newspaper. The family eventually moved out of the area. It was later revealed the family (and kid) got death threats. I want to say the local paper virtually ignored him after he left; they may have run an article about how he transitioned out of football, or from QB to punter. Definitely had one of those smarmy “look how high he went, folks” vibe to it.

The Lehigh Valley is like that. Some real JO’s there. I grew up with family who loved Reading Phillies/Fightins baseball. That same Lehigh Valley rag, which did cover Berks County, wouldn’t give them much of a sniff, and constantly preached how Allentown deserved a team. Maybe even the Phillies’ AA one. I wasn’t surprised by PSU craziness...I grew up close enough to it.

I actually went to a game of Kendra’s (he played for Bethlehem Catholic) against their arch rivals, Allentown Central Catholic that year (CCHS’ QB would also commit to and then play for PSU, Matt Senecca). Every once in a while, Senecca stories show up. He coaches/d for an area college. Nevermind that he was a flop at PSU (but did co-start in those bad QB by committee years). He’s a true local guy, don’t you know!

I mean, you've never seen a kid commit to a school, or just cut his list down, on social media and see fans of a school he didn't pick talk on Twitter or their message board about how the kid obviously was scared of competing for playing time against (player X on their roster) and wants everything handed to him, or that it was all about who was willing to line his dad's/uncle's pockets the most, or that clearly their program backed off of him because he wasn't that good/had red flags in his character?

I remember when Syracuse was a vagabond team, playing all over NYS while the Dome was being built.Back before every SU game was on TV, the smaller schools like Cornell, could get 13-20k a game and need both sides of bleachers.

RE: What was better about college sports when you were college age?
I spent 15 years in college, so my range of selection is wider than most. Having stated that, I have a top 3...

#3 Arguing over the AP, UIP, and Coaches Poll- Based on where everyone's teams were ranked or receiving votes your favorite poll could change from week to week.

#2 Texas/Texas A&M on Thanksgiving- Really all of the old rivalries that were lost due to realignment and greed.

#1 The story of Joel Ron McKelvey AKA Ron Weaver- In my opinion, no one has ever loved playing college ball more than this guy. ESPN should make a 30 for 30 about his story. I was so fascinated by it, that I drove to Austin and bought his helmet after the '95 season ended.

The tackling in today's college game is awful. With all these new rules about targeting, it appears a lot of players are afraid to even try and tackle anymore. As far as WRs are concerned, watch the college game adopt the NFL bump rule in the near future.

I was in college when we upset ranked Navy on a glorious, sunny 72 degree day in November, 1978. That was the last game in Archbold Stadium. The wrecking ball came in on Monday and started demolition for the Dome.
