Crayton's 2021 Simulation [NC: Texas>Miami]
Usually each week I simulate the remainder of the season 10,000 times to generate %s for postseason berths (playoff, NY6, bowls eligibility, etc). Last year, I simulated the lost 2020 season. This year I'll do the same for 2021 (assuming 0 cancellations).

It proved to be a good exercise for familiarizing ourselves with the upcoming schedule and rooting for our sporting interests. Toward the end of the season we analyzed potential playoff scenarios. This year's "committee" has been updated to not count "lost last week" so bad, specifically when compared to idle teams; last year, the loser of a 1-vs-2 B1GCCG inexplicably fell to #7 (past two 10-2 idle teams).

I plan to upload most of the season in chunks:
a. Weeks 0-3 (later tonight)
b. Weeks 4-7
c. Weeks 8-11
d. Week 12
e. Rivalry Week
f. CCG Week
g. Playoff/NY6/various playoff formats

RE: Crayton's 2021 Simulation
I’m curious—what do you use to simulate the results?

Wrote my own program years ago. It started out as a ranking system then I added a Monte Carlo simulation on top. I've been tinkering with a fantasy multi-year simulation (novel schedules, conference alignment choices, etc.) but I don't have much of the same time anymore. For this sim, I am using Simulation #123 of 10,000. It takes only about 15 minutes to do 10,000, but I have all the results saved, so I don't have to do it more than once each week.

RE: Crayton's 2021 Simulation
I see going into Week 3 that North Carolina is 1-1 and Virginia Tech is 2-0. That must mean that your simulation has pre-season #46 Tech beating #27 UNC. Is that due to home field advantage?

You have Clemson and Alabama losing the first week? Obviously the fact that they're playing Georgia, Clemson losing isn't a surprise. I would be stunned if Alabama lost to Miami.

Colorado 50, Texas A&M 3??????????????

Oh man. Not all the results posted. Thanks. Updated. Ctrl+F to find your team(s).

Virginia Tech did win 34-31 at home. They say home field is about 3 points, so yes you can blame it on being at home. Looks like an exciting game in Blacksburg at any rate!

Colorado 50, Texas A&M 3??????????????

LSU is the lone SEC-West team still undefeated. Auburn beat Akron and their FCS opponent by an average of 37 points, but then laid an egg against Penn State, 14-34.

Alabama lost to Miami, by 3. Does that mean Miami is the real deal or that Alabama is a little more pedestrian this year? The Tide beat their FCS opponent by 4 scores and Florida by 3 scores; should have blown out the FCS team by a bit more but a 22 point margin against the Gators is typical. Miami took App State to the woodshed, 13-50, and then escaped a visit by Michigan State 27-20.

Jimbo and the Aggies don't look good. Kent State took them took the fourth quarter before losing 28-35 and the New Mexico Lobos had a "respectable" 21-45 loss to this previously-considered title contender.

Clemson almost dropped their second game, against their FCS cupcake, nearly harkening back to the '06 Michigan-App State game. They may have righted the ship, hanging 50 on the Yellow Jackets.

With Alabama and Clemson stumbling, how are Ohio State and Oklahoma doing?

Tulane took Oklahoma to the wire, before the Sooners locked in a 16-13 win to start the season. Oklahoma rebounded with a strong, 42-10 showing in their FCS game. But the Cornhuskers (1-2) secured a win, in Norman, 28-27. It is/was a rivalry matchups, so maybe it'll be forgiven if the Sooners win out... but it is looking like the playoff field is wide-open.

Ohio State beat Minnesota by 6, Oregon by 4, and Tulsa by 34, about what you'd expect. The Tulsa game in particular showed the Buckeyes may have the legs to reach the playoff.

(06-03-2021 02:21 PM)Fighting Muskie Wrote:  so Alabama is still #2 despite losing to undefeated #6 Miami. How does that work?

"'Cuz it's 'Bama." Too-long explanation below:

Pairwise comparisons aren't done unless two teams are adjacent in the rankings. At this point in the season, rankings are almost exclusively based on a team's "Strength of Record" (SOR).

There are 2 major factors that go into a rating: Power, which is largely a guess at a team's ability to win on a neutral field and SOR which is largely based on anticipated record, early in the season.

Power is based primarily on point-differential/MOV, with a pre-season bias that diminishes as the season goes on (it becomes a straight SRS, or Simple Rating System). SOR uses opponents' Power to evaluate a team's Strength of Schedule; SOR is the strength a team must possess to accomplish that team's Record, given their schedule (early in the season the "Record" used is largely anticipated Record vs. scheduled opponents). SOR improves as a team wins AND as their opponents' Power/MOV improves.

On a neutral field, the Tide are still given ~60% win probability vs. the Hurricanes and this translates to a better SOR. SOR is the primary ranking value, but a team can* hop another if they have 2 of (better Power, head-to-head sweep, or better record).

If Miami (and their opponents, particularly the ACC Coastal) continue to win and by decent margins, they will eclipse the Tide's Power or SOR, either of which, combined with the H2H victory, should put the Hurricanes above the Tide.

#1 (#4 Power) Ohio State (3-0)
#2 (#1 Power) Alabama (2-1)
#3 (#2 Power) Georgia (3-0)
#4 (#8 Power) Notre Dame (3-0)
#5 (#3 Power) Clemson (2-1)
#6 (#5 Power) Miami (3-0)
#12 (#6 Power) Penn State (2-1)
#15 (#7 Power) Florida (2-1)

As the season goes on and team records are more stratified, and we get a better look at conferences'/teams' power (not just the 1 lucky/unlucky game), and there are simply more head-to-head games, those tie-breakers will factor in a bit more.

RE: Crayton's 2021 Simulation
Thanks for the explanation. Yours isn’t necessarily the criteria we’d see the AP and coaches poll rate these teams (although I’ve always disliked early season polls because there simply not enough data points to make a fair assessment.

I used to have an ELO element that added big swings early in the season before petering out to the underlying SOR, but I replaced that with the SRS/Power model described above. I'm sure I considered keeping all 3, but thought that'd be overly complicated... it would improve the "feel" of early season rankings. In either case you're right that it doesn't follow the AP/Coaches model where teams tend to "stick" to their rank and move up and down when a team above them loses or they score a big victory.

Most computer rankings should better be named "ratings" because teams are listed in the order of some calculated number. Incorporating a (small) amount of pair-wise comparisons for tie-breaking was my attempt at bucking the "rating" nature of computer rankings. I'd like to include more, expanding beyond teams initially adjacent, to better mimic human polls but it is often hard to add "rules" that the computer won't run amok with.

I'm always up, though, for building a better mouse trap.

RE: Crayton's 2021 Simulation
Boise State had a statement opening win in Orlando, defeating UCF 50-10. However, the wheels fell off the of the Citronauts' football team as the next week they lost 23-21 to their FCS opponent and went to 0-3 the following week against Louisville.

Boise had a too-close 11-point win against #130 UTEP, and fell to #20 OK State by a close 24-21. The only undefeated G5 teams?? Houston, Air Force, Ohio, and Buffalo. Probably the fewest number of such teams after 3 weeks.

BYU has started the season strong with 3 wins against the Pac-12: Arizona 21-14, Utah 20-10, and Arizona St 35-13. That nets them a #9 ranking. They have 2 easy games against USF and USU before their showdown against Boise for the Best of the non-Power West. I'll note that the Cougars season ends @ USC... would be nice if that game had playoff implications.

Top G5 Champ %
1) 21.13% Boise St (2-1)
2) 18.54% Buffalo (3-0)
3) 16.15% Air Force (3-0)
4) 7.94% Ohio (3-0)
5) 7.71% Cincinnati (2-1)
6) 6.53% App St (2-1)
7) 6.12% Houston (3-0)
8) 3.46% Western Michigan (2-1)
9) 2.44% Ball St (2-1)
10) 1.85% San Jose St (2-1)

RE: Crayton's 2021 Simulation
Looking ahead at the playoff at this point, Power teams (including independents Notre Dame and BYU) are 99%+ likely to make the playoff if undefeated. Georgia and BYU are the only undefeateds to get locked out in at least 1 of 10,000 sims. After that, the odds follow thusly:

Chance TEAM (frequency)
Guarantees >75%
99% 1-loss CHAMP Big Ten (37%)
98% 1-loss CHAMP Pac 12 (13%)
97% (11-1) Notre Dame (35%)
87% 1-loss at large Big Ten (26%)
75% 1-loss at large Pac 12 (1%)
Contenders >50%
69% 0-loss CHAMP MWC (5%)
68% 1-loss CHAMP ACC (38%)
67% 2-loss CHAMP Big Ten (22%)
66% 1-loss CHAMP SEC (42%)
Need Help > 25%
49% 1-loss CHAMP Big 12 (23%)
47% 0-loss CHAMP AAC (1%)
44% 1-loss at large ACC (22%)
