Stallings is under one of the NCAA's harshest punishments, the "show-cause" order. No school will touch a coach under show-cause.

The only major college coaches I can recall who got a second chance after a show-cause order was Kelvin Sampson at Houston and Bruce Pearl at Auburn. Most of the others, from Bob Wade to Dave Bliss to Kevin Ollie, never coached in college again.

Good catch on my fumble, DFW Hoya. I forgot Stalling is under a show-cause order (and, as such, could not have gotten a job even if a program had wanted him).

Sampson and Pearl are like John Wooden compared to KStallings, so the latter's future is not bright.

Worst Coaches and Why They're Infamous
Worst is a deep dark hole. Here's a few real stinkers in no particular order: Bill Lewis at GT. Ted Roof at Duke. Randy Edsall at UCONN. Paul Hewitt.

San Jose State:

Fitz Hill, head football coach 2001-2004. The walking, talking example of the Peter Principle.

His 14-33 is not the worst record of all time, but it's not very far from it. What sets him apart was that he was a con man, who prolonged his stay by playing the race card. Essentially he was a full time activist, an average motivational speaker, and completely lost as a football coach and hopeless as a recruiter.

Mark Purdy was a cheerleader for him years, putting heat on SJSU to keep him after the opinion was near unanimous to can him after two years. And he remained a cheerleader even long after Hill was fired and nobody ever touched him again as a coach. Hill managed to parlay his activism into the Presidency of Arkansas Baptist College in 2006.

In Basketball we've had a number of really bad ones. George Nessman is the one I remember. Just totally out of his league. His next job, whcih he still holds, after being fired by the Spartans is Assistant JV coach of Harker High School (rich kids Division IV, which is for small schools ... they suck). George is a nice guy, but not qualified ever to be a D-I coach.

But Jean Prioleau is possibly worse, 8-62 MWC record from 2017-2201, 20-93 overall. I know little about him, except I thought when he was hired this wont work, and it hasn't.

But we have some hope, as we picked up Tim Miles who had winning records at Nebraska and Colorado State. He has recruited reasonably well and coached at a higher level. I am hopeful this works out for us.

Steve Kragthorpe
Took over Orange Bowl Champion squad here at Louisville with 18 returning starters in 2007. The team was ranked #10 in preseason poll. The team finished 6-6 including losing as a 37 point favorite to Syracuse. I believe it still stands as one of the worst losses by a favorite in college football history.

Syracuse Orange (+37) over Louisville Cardinals

Sept. 22, 2007

Syracuse had lost its first three games of the 2007 season by an average of 28.7 points and was taking on a ranked Louisville team that had won 20 straight at home. But none of that mattered on this day. After entering as 37-point underdogs, the Orange took a 38-21 lead in the fourth quarter before holding on to win by three.

Final score: Syracuse 38, Louisville 35

Kragthorpe went on to drive the program into the ground in three seasons. Kragthorpian has become an adjective for terrible coaching in Kentucky.

Haha. I remember that game well. Louisville had lost a game the week before, against I believe Kentucky, and there were a couple Louisville fans on the BE board that week of the game posting stuff like "Sorry Syracuse fans, nothing personal" in their anticipation of the Cardinals taking out their frustrations on the Orange.
I fully expected SU to get scraped up pretty bad by the Cards since we had a HC who was more pathetic than Kragthorpe, Greg (GERG) Robinson.

It was a Kragthorpian result indeed. 04-cheers

He was so bad he makes you appreciate even a mediocre at best coach like Scott Satterfield. When people say “it could always be worse”, that’s exactly what I think of.

When being introduced as KU's new coach, he answered the question "Are you be moving here?" with "No." It was over before it started.

Not sure how I'd respond to "Are you be moving here?" myself, think you may have left "going to" out of the quotation, LOL. Presumably, the Lawrence-area food supply had sufficient time to rebound from the Mangino-related shortages during the Turner Gill-era immediately preceding Charlie's tenure at KU, so that shouldn't have been an impediment to moving to Kansas.

I jumped off of that bandwagon when it was announced that he decided to stay at Ohio State to coach in the bowl game AFTER being introduced as the new HC at RU. He never understood the high school football culture in NJ and never networked with the in state coaching cabal.

For Cincinnati many would point to Tommy Tuberville, but I think the correct answer is Dave Currey (1984-88). Not only was Currey 19-36 during his tenure, he got the program put on probation for recruiting violations.

In my era of watching, it’s a tossup between Ewing and Craig Esherick. Craig made it to a S16, Ewing won a Big East Championship in his house. Esh had a better, but not drastically better, BE and overall record. Ewing recruits better, but hasn’t been able to keep his teams together whether due to transfers or disciplinary issues.

Esherick: 103-74, One NCAA (2-1), Three NIT (5-3), declined 2002 NIT.
Ewing: 62-59, One NCAA (0-1), One NIT (0-1)

Neither are "worse". Esherick had to replace a legend without head coaching experience (ask Jon Scheyer how that'll go) whereas Ewing arrived as a legend without head coaching experience. In both cases, they were selected by John Thompson for the role.

And that’s the problem.

Edit: I do put a ton of weight on BE tourney championships, which is the only reason I have them as equally bad.

Football-Charlie Strong. 16-21. 3 losing seasons in a row for the 2nd time in program history and first time since the 30s. Worst record of any Texas football coach and one of only two to have a losing record at Texas. The other one died at Iwo Jima. Charlie had no such heroic positives. Charlie was one of the dumbest game day coaches in all of football. His in game decisions were mind-blowingly stupid.

Basketball-Bob Weltich 77-98. Took an exciting, regular SWC contender under Abe Lemons and turned them into boring losers. Tom Penders came in right after and won over 20 games 7 of the next 8 years and made it to the NCAA 8 of 10 seasons.

Charlie Strong may have been a bad coach but I never had issues with him as a person. He never complained once about the expectations expected at Texas. Contrast that with John Mackovic, an absolutely horrible person who complained from day one about UT fan expectations. During the football season, he was always golfing during the week at Barton Creek Country Club flirting with every attractive woman in the place. Ask any player whoever played under him(and I know quite a few) and they will tell you that he really didn't care about them as individuals. All the glory belonged to him. John Mackovic would have run the UT program into the ground if he was allowed to return for his 7th season. Thank goodness, 3/4 of Longhorn Foundation Members threatened not to renew if he was brought back. The 6 years that Mackovic was here are years I can never get back.

Agreed with Bob Weltlich, I knew the UT basketball manager back then and he used to tell us fellow football managers horror stories about Kaiser Bob, a complete and utter jerk. Under Weltlich, UT Basketball was so bad that my college roommate waked on and made the team.

Sorry Clifton but IMO it's Tommy Tuberville. He bailed on Texas Tech when it was apparent that his sham coaching was about to be exposed. He came to Cincinnati thinking he could coast into retirement. Currey never had a high performing program handed to him like Drubberville did when he took the Bearcats job. His record [horrid] in big games and in "bowlcations" speaks for itself. He burned our program down and set us back years after he was fired, er, retired.

For Iowa is has to be Basketball coach Todd Lickliter. Lickliter was hired after a successful run as the head coach at Butler. Unfortunately Iowa hired the wrong Butler coach and should have hired Butler assistant Brad Stevens instead.

In 3 years as Iowa head coach from 2007 to 2010, Lickliter finished with 3 strsight losing seasons, 38-58 overall record, including 12-20 in his last season. But even worse, his teams played a boring style of low scoring games, and Iowa attendence absolutely plummeted.

Meanwhile at the same time, Butler assistant Brad Stevens was promoted to butler head coach and won 30 games his first season and ended up leading Butler to back to back NCAA NCG in his 3rd and 4th seasons.

This was a close one to call, but I will go with Ray Goff, or as Steve Spurrier liked to refer to him, Ray Goof. This guy, while very nice, was definitely in over his head as a head coach. He also worked for his.old coach, Vince Dooley, who still had to fire him after giving him several years to right the ship. The one thing that bailed out Goff a lot was that Tech was equally bad during this time.

For basketball, I will go with Ron Jirsa. Very non descript head coach.

(05-31-2021 09:33 PM)AllTideUp Wrote:  Here's a nice offseason topic, I thought.

We like to talk about the best, but let's give a moment to the worst.

Who is your program's worst coach and why? Who are some of the worst coaches you remember observing and why?

Not intended to be smack talk either...just a reveling in mediocrity.

I'll go first. For Alabama, some might be tempted to say our worst coach in recent years was Mike Shula. Granted, he wasn't great, but Mike Price takes the cake.

The dude came from Washington State with some semblance of promise only to be dismissed a few months later after a crazy night with a stripper. BTW, he used a UA credit card to pay for "services" at the strip club. Not only that, the primary reason he was dismissed is because he had already been warned about carousing and other raunchy behavior. Couldn't control himself apparently.

The only game he coached was the A-Day Game. I was there that day and I was actually a little excited about the upcoming season. In fact, I had saved the newspaper from the day he was hired because I thought it was going to be the beginning of something pretty good.

Here's to you Mike Price, one of the biggest screwups this sport has ever seen.

I know it's not a coach, but I'd like to submit our former AD, Bob Entzion, as an honorable mention. First off, he was an associate AD at our rival, UND, when we hired him. I mean, who does that? He almost immediately butted heads with our successful head football coach(Rocky Hager) who had been pounding on UND for a decade. Things first came to a head when the two almost came to blows on the sideline during a televised game. Eztzion(as NDSU's AD) didn't like that Rocky was running up the score on UND because a blow out would hurt UND's chances of a playoff spot. Rocky didn't appreciate that Entzion was trying to interfere with his coaching during a game. I don't think any punches were thrown, but the two had to be physically separated. And it was all caught on camera.

Sadly, it was Entzion that had the final word, and Rocky was fired a year or two later. Entzion turned around and hired Bob Babich as a replacement. Babich turned out to be the worst FB coach we've had over the last 40 or 50 years, though some of that was outside of his control. He shifted us from the veer option to the WCO, and we didn't have the correct personnel for a couple years. Then when we started having the right recruits for his system, we got seriously hit by the injury bug for a season or two. Still, it was a rough half decade for Bison FB.

The cherry on top of it all was how Entzion's career at NDSU ended. During an away trip to play Nebraska-Omaha, Entzion got busted trying to solicit sex from a male undercover police officer in a public park.

On the plus side, we ended up moving to DI and getting Gene Taylor(AD), Craig Bohl(FB), and Tim Miles(MBB) in the aftermath of Entzion's resignation. So, silver lining, I guess.

That's easy... ELOSS 0-12 Johnson.

We come off a 12-2 year with Larry Fedora, the plate is still full of brimmiing talent with _13_ returning starters.

Eloss brings in Anthony Alford as his starting QB.

We have a good game with Nebraska going into the end of the half (Only down by 11), and Eloss brings in Alford to let his new quarterback run the system "Because we weren't going to win anyway". Thanks Coach Good-for-Nothing....

So yeah, you can't tell me Eloss wasn't brought here to cause our program to be nearly destroyed from the inside out....
