"Assurance"? Got to believe Parrish & Brown both think they can win the job. Parrish didn't leave LSU to sit either. And BTW White was recruited by & played for Norvell at ASU. That's a little different relationship. But the point is both Lynch & White had a noticeable adjustment period before they were really productive. That can cause losses that would otherwise be wins

Reminds me of this thread and what some of us were saying there. I didn't like what I was seeing from the Penn St. game on, but I'm willing to be more forgiving with this added perspective.

We scored more points and gained more yards on Penn State than anyone else had; including Ohio State and all of the Big Ten. An interception at the goal line prevented us from scoring 46 points. Our defense getting lit up prevented us from scoring even more.

Orona-Lopez got destroyed after replacing Dill and Magnifico out also hurt us big time. Right now, IMO, it is all about not having the same players. Gibson, Coxie, Gainwell, Jones, and no practice time for the kids.

Last but not least, a little perspective is in order...

NCAA TOTAL OFFENSE
2020 - 22
2019 - 10
2018 - 4
2017 - 4
2016 - 28
2015 - 19
2014 - 49
2013 - 118

Look at that 2014 team. Hayes was our leading rusher with 949 yards, and we had one run from scrimmage longer than 40 yards all season. Our leading receiver was Malone with 555 yards, and we had one reception over 50 yards the entire season. That was a good offense that was #49 in the country. Last year we were #22 in total offense.

You can't compare last year and this year with the 3 years before it, the same way you can't compare any basketball team with 2008. You have to appreciate that the 3 years for the offense in football and 2008 in basketball, were so special, that it might not be reasonable to expect that type of excellence more than once in a blue moon.

You hope you can come close to duplicating it, and you hope that the defense can pick up the slack. It should be much easier for the defense to make big improvements (which it did the last half of last year) than it is to expect to have a top 5 offense every year.

So maybe we were lucky to win a high percentage of close games last year. So in a normal year, maybe we lose one of those games, but we beat SMU, beat UTSA and UT Martin, and Purdue is a toss up. We end up 11-3 or 10-4, or maybe we have average luck and go 9-5.

That is no reason to think that teams worse than us will beat us and we will go 6-6 this year.

If any of those other QBs are better than Gunnell...we are going to have a fantastic year.

Everyone seems to assume it because it is common sense. Gunnell is proven as a very good D1 quarterback and has 2 years experience. IF he isn't the starter it is because Parrish or Brown are spectacular. We are going to have very good quarterback play this year. Out of all that we don't know about our offense; the surest things are Gunnell, Austin III and Dykes.

Please be careful. If you keep posting about how great point guards make teams play better, or insider info like this, they will turn it into a pay site.

White was exponentially great with a great offensive line, and exponentially not great with a not great offensive line. The new quarterback will almost for sure not be as accurate, but all 3 are much better runners and will also be able to buy more time in the pocket.

I suppose we’ll see. We won 8 games last year with no running game… riding the back of a senior QB who could check us into the right offense and complete passes even when defenses dropped 8 & managed to pressure the QB. Our oline was dreadful… so it’s asking a lot of the new group and a new QB to maintain. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m just trying to be realistic & 6-6 seems fair.

We won with a bad offensive line, a quarterback with zero mobility, lost 3,800 of receiving yardage, and lost a lot of great players. We went 8-3 during what turned out to be a rebuilding year.

Nicholls
Arkansas State 4-7
MSU 4-7
UTSA
Temple 1-6
Tulsa 7-3
Navy 3-7
UCF 6-4
SMU 7-3 H
ECU 3-6
Houston 3-5
Tulane 6-6

Why would we be an underdog to anyone except possibly UCF and Tulsa? What have the other teams done to warrant thinking that half of them will beat us?
I'll answer for the A-State game.

When anywhere close to healthy last year, they were a good team as evidenced by games with Memphis, K-State, and Louisiana, about the only games they were not devastated by COVID-you do remember that COVID thing don't you? It kicked their butt, especially in the trenches after their game with you.

They return the majority of that team, helped their underachieving HC fined another home, and hired a better one.

They were going to be a better team this year without any additions, and more than a handful for the Tigers at their place anyway, but old Butch did not stand pat and added 50+ newbies this week, and included were the following:

Thurman Geathers -DE (Louisville)
Te'Vailance Hunt-WR (TCU)
James Blackman-QB (FSU)
AJ Acock- QB (LSU)
Allen Walters- QB (Miss St)
Akeem Hayes- WR (Kentucky)
Jack Combs- WR (Iowa)
Johnnie Lang- RB (Iowa State)
Nick Lewis- OL (Kentucky)
John Mincey- DL (Tenn)
Kivon Bennett- DL (Tenn)
Tim Hardiman- DL (Navy)
Charles Willekes- DL (Mich St)
Quay Mays- DL (West Virginia)
Scooby Carter- CB (Alabama)
Khyheem Waleed-WR (Boise)

The COVID virus ended their 9 years of winning records and bowl games, but it was going to start again this year without these additions. If you get out of Jonesboro with a win it will shock me.

Oh yeah I think the majority knows what we did to PSU yardage-wise compared to other teams they played. And yeah once PSU finally realized what they could do with their run game made things worse. But I still feel we got away from what got us there in the first place like I mentioned in that thread.

Also when it comes to the yardage ranks I still feel the same way as I did here when we talked about it. Looking back and comparing 2014 and 2020 you referenced, they were pretty much the same rank in efficiency. This shows they had to do a lot of work to achieve those numbers you listed last season.

My view is still play-calling was the bigger issue than talent. And with MvE pointing out the lack of time to install the changes they wanted, I'm willing to give the OC an opportunity to show how well his system works next season.

(06-02-2021 06:50 PM)MvETigers Wrote:  3 Factors that nobody apparently wants to discuss when it comes to the 2020 team as opposed to this year's team.

1. Defense - we had 8 TOTAL practices prior to starting the season. NONE of which had a full offense practicing against a full defense. Then prior to the second game of the season, we had a 28 day layoff, in which the majority of that time players weren't even allowed in the athletic facilities, much less practicing. The defense improved greatly as the season went along, because we had time to actually install the defense. We've had a full offseason and return some great talent, as well as add some very impressive potential talent.

2. Offense - While we had the same OC, anybody that knows the program knows that Norvell called 99% of the plays and it was 100% his offense. Once again, even with Brady White, we installed a new offense in EIGHT practices. That new offense was centered around Gainwell and Coxie, who played in a combined total of TWO games. While we returned starters on the OL, it was a new blocking scheme with new assignments all installed... well, you get the point.

3. Schedule - We go from a C19 crazy schedule back to a normal schedule, with 100% fan participation at the Liberty Bowl. We actually had a Spring Camp. IF you were at Friday Night Lights, there is a lot to be excited about with this team, but the defense definitely looked improved. Fans - there was nothing as weird as the first game of the season with only 4,000 fans. It was much more surreal than the ECU game, I was there for that one too. One last point, not only do we have a normal schedule, we also get to drop Cincy in the regular season and replace them with ECU.

Even with all the negatives of last season, we were still in contention for the AAC Championship Game. We still had a solid offense and improving defense. We won our first bowl game in years. And yet fans think we are going to struggle to get to 6-6.... Give me a freakin' break!

Haven’t seen many think our kids will struggle to reach 6-6. But many have recognized that 6-6 is a possibility, on the low end

Every school dealt with covid, some worse, some less so than Memphis

There is not a game our kids cannot win, but there are few that are guaranteed wins. 8 sounds right, hoping for 12 of course

In a nutshell, The 78 yard TD run by Gibson against SMU, would have been a 4 yard run by any of our backs last year, and half of Gibson, Henderson and Gainwell's big plays would have been 5-10 yard gains. If we had players of that caliber, our offense would have been really good, despite the poor line play.

If we had last year's running backs and receivers in 2019, we would have lost 3-5 games.

For fun, I checked clown show's list of wide receiver transfers...

Hunt - TCU, 2 years, 5 catches for 18 yards
Hayes - Kentucky, 2 years, 5 catches for 59 yards
Combs - Iowa, 2 years, 0 catches for 0 yards
Waleed - Boise, 2 years, 0 catches for 0 yards

4 transfers, 8 years on a D1 roster, 10 catches for 77 yards.

Their running back transfer should light it up...

Johnnie Lang - Iowa State, 4 years. 2020 3 rushes...2 (TWO) yards

Oh, and Butch Davis. Off to the Access Bowl we go 03-lmfao

I folllow FSU to some degree and Blackman was never effective as a QB at FSU. Lots of problems there to be fixed. Norvell recruited over him with every QB he signed, so he saw the writing on the wall and transferred. Aycock is a local Jonesboro kid who had good stats in high school. Walters never played at MSU. It shows he played in three games in 2019 but, it must have been very briefly since MSU has no stats for him that year. Not sure where he played in 2020 since he appears not to have been on the MSU roster. I doubt any of these players beat out Hatcher as starting QB.

That is a stat that is not sustainable. With graduate transfer taking a hit at our depth, there's just too many unknowns.
The Arkansas State game will be the game that solves a lot of questions. It'll be our first test on the road against a team in Butch Jones that is trying to revamp himself and will coach with a chip on his shoulder.
I do believe Gunnell will do good, but the playmakers around him will be lacking to a certain degree.

Arkansas State loses 2 of their top 3 receivers receivers, their top running back and a lot of other key seniors from a team that went 4-7. We are 26-2 at home the last 4 years, with a 1 point loss to #10 UCF and a 1 point loss to Iowa State, only because Henderson sat out.

Sure, we are all of a sudden going to go 6-6. Some of our fans sure do like to keep it "real." 03-lmfao
Arkansas State lost Jonathan Adams who took the baton from Bayless. Rucker will pick it up now. The best two RBs return and the QB plus a lot of competition. The offense will be improved with a healthy Marcel Murray and Pare as a sophomore.

Biggest change will be on the defensive side where a ton of transfers who contributed or excelled at P5 schools will bring a whole new look to a return to a four man front. Scooby Carter, Kivon Bennett and a bunch of pass rushers will definitely improve what was the worst defense in 15 years.

Biggest improvement will be the departure of Blake Anderson.

Geathers: Loserville - In 2019, appeared in 13 games on defense and on special teams ... played mainly on the punt return team. Opted out of 2020 03-lmfao

Mincey: Tennessee In 2020, Played in all 10 games as a reserve linebacker/defensive lineman, totaling eight tackles and half a tackles for loss ... Made a season-high two tackles at Vanderbilt (12/12) ... Made one tackle and half a TFL vs. #6 Florida (12/5). 03-lmfao

Bennett: Tennessee - Leads team and is tied for second in the SEC with 7.5 TFLs ... Tied for team lead and fourth in SEC with 4.5 sacks. Seems like a great player.

Hardiman: Navy - 2020 recruit, no stars 03-lmfao

Willekes: Michigan State - Walk on, played in 1 game in 2019. 03-lmfao

Mays: West Virginia - Back in late December, West Virginia defensive lineman, Quay Mays elected to enter his name into the transfer portal after spending just one year in the Mountaineer program. Upon arrival, Mays was expected to add some immediate depth to the West Virginia defensive line behind Darius Stills. However, Mays saw very little game action and recorded just four tackles on the season. 03-lmfao

This is one of my least favourite things about early summer. Usually opposing fans have the courtesy of waiting until 3-4 days before a game to tell you last year was a fluke (again), how they will be much improved (again), how they will be great (again) and how you will be "lucky" to beat them (again).

Arkansuck State will be here every day for the next 3 months. Based on the sheer volume and stupidity of their posts, they are the only fanbase that should be banned on our board.

You might ask yourself, how can a school like Arkansuck State get a good player like Bennett to transfer there? That was a head scratcher, since he is the only recruit on their transfer list that has made more than a couple of catches or tackles at the D1 level.

Quote:Bennett was arrested on Dec. 1, (2021) and dismissed from the program later that day following a traffic stop by UT police on Neyland Drive. Police, during a vehicle search, found more than 44 grams of marijuana, a scale, 58 plastic baggies and a loaded Glock 17 9mm handgun, according to the police report.

Bennett had faced felony charges of marijuana possession and possession of a firearm during commission or attempt to commit a felony. Possessing more than half an ounce of marijuana is a felony charge in Tennessee, and the felony gun possession charge stemmed from the felony drug charge.

At least none of the other "impact" transfers ever got arrested. Except, another one did.

Quote:Willekes: Michigan State - Walk on, played in 1 game in 2019.

Quote:East Lansing Police arrest logs show one report of “Aggravated/Felonious Assault — Non-Family — Strong Arm” on that date involving two suspects that included forced entry into a residence at 301 Charles Street in East Lansing, which is the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house. Gonzales confirmed that was the location of the incident involving Fulton and Willekes.

Weren't y'all supposed to dominate us up front last year going against one of the best DLine we faced all year.

And that best offense in the G5 was going to give us trouble.

As a reminder...Neither of those things happened.

We ran more yards against ASU than any other D1 team we played last year.

The game wasn't really close.
