To be fair, and I could be wrong, I think those numbers only include the players who actually played at each program. If players who committed to the school but never made it to campus due to getting drafted and signed out of HS were counted, ECU would pull ahead. Not that that should matter a whole lot.

Either way, it speaks to the talent level we have gotten and how similar were are to a very good EZU program. We're on the verge.

Landen Roupp just got taken by the Giants in the 12th round, the 356th overall selection.

1st CAA player selected so far (I believe)

Now begs the question, the three drafted so far, as good as gone? Or think there is a shot to come back.

ECU had 3 as well:
  • RHP Gavin Williams - Indians (Rd 1, Pick 23 overall)
  • 2B Connor Norby - Orioles (Rd 2, Pick 41 overall)
  • 1B Thomas Francisco - Cardinals (Rd 19, Pick 571 overall)

RE: 2021-2022 baseball
So let's re-calibrate now with the draft over.

Martin Gair not getting drafted and making it onto campus is pretty huge for us now that our pitching staff is kind of hitting the reset button with a lot of young arms. Perfect Game had him as the # 1 RHP prospect in the state and # 5 overall. It's no small thing to have him end up a Seahawk.

With Noah Bridges going undrafted I have to wonder if he'll be back or if he ends up signing somewhere as an undrafted free agent. We'll see.

Let's assume, for our purposes, that all 3 draftees are gone. In which case I happily congratulate Landen, Adam and Brooks and wish all of them the best of luck.

The aftermath of this would be that we lose our top 3 most used pitchers from last season, a trio who racked up 247.2 innings and 37 starts. We'd only have the following returners who started any games last season:
  • Ryan Calvert (9 starts): 1-2, 5.13 ERA, .272 BAA, 29 K's, 16 BB's, 26.1 innings
  • Jacob Shafer (5 starts): 1-1, 5.29 ERA, .316 BAA, 25 K's, 6 BB's, 32.1 innings
  • Ethan Chenault (1 start): 3-1, 4.03 ERA, .189 BAA, 24 K's, 10 BB's, 29.0 innings
  • Carter Holjes (2 starts): 0-2, 5.40 ERA, .280 BAA, 11 K's, 6 BB's, 13.1 innings

I don't if any or all of those will be considered for the weekend rotation next season, but that's your starting point when looking for weekend options on the current roster.

Offensively, if we lose Baldwin and Bridges, I suppose you're now looking at a starting OF that consists of Lifrieri, Marsh, and a question mark. Bridges returning would be huge to give us 3 quality returning starters there, especially since I don't know who will play CF otherwise.

I hear that Baldwin will most likely be back, will not sign unless the Giants up the offer big time. Gair was offered but not enough so he will be at UNCW.
If Gair has fastball command I would expect him to be a weekend starter from day one. Chenault and Hodges in that order with Gair after them but he could be the Friday night guy with his velo, in the CAA it would be a tough matchup . They also have some juco and transfer guys coming in along with RJ Sales to bolster the pitching staff. Really need a LHP in the mix as a starter but they are hard to come by at the CAA level. Maybe Phelan can help but his velo would have to bump up from his HS days.

If the attached link is accurate, Hawks have 2 southpaws 90 MPH or higher. Go to 2021 recruits.

Hate to disappoint but there is literally no way these guys throw 90mph-zero chance. I saw Phelan twice this past year in HS and he was 84-87 early and 82-84 in the 5th inning both times. The other kid pitched at Ft.Myers and they have him mixed up with another guy there,he is about the same velo as Phelan -85 or so.
The RHPs coming in do throw hard and they could help immediatley-Gair,Sales and Taylor are all over 90 and Gair is 95 all day.
PG does a great job but they are not perfect in spite of the name !

Geez, that's too bad. One more year he would have likely been able to top that

RE: 2021-2022 baseball
Incoming recruit at Catcher, Bryan Arendt, is legit. He's on the Wake Forest Fungo this summer and they came to Wilmington to play the Sharks last week. He has a cannon for an arm and a good looking swing. I don't have any summer stats on him, unfortunately, since those are hidden behind a paywall on the team website.

Arendt is ranked the # 7 catcher in the state by Perfect Game and they appear to be underrating him. Look for him to immediately push Suggs for the starting job.
