RE: $125M Legacy Arena renovation expected to be complete in December
I will defer to anyone who has up to date knowledge of NCAA "official visit" rules for recruits, but I recall that in the late 1980s when Bama was pulling all conference games and its top OOC games from Legion Field and back to campus, NCAA rules were cited. According to those citations, if a school had an on campus stadium, it could not invite recruits to make "official visits" to games at off campus stadiums.

My question is whether a game at Legacy Arena would be covered by such a rule since UAB has Bartow Arena? The kind of game opponent being tossed about as desired for Legacy Arena would be one UAB would want recruits to visit if possible.

Some bragged about "taking over the arena at Troy" due to their lack of support. If that happens at Legacy against Auburn - or any other school - then it is on UAB - just like we put it on Troy.

UAB rarely sold out the old BJCC either, but there were many a magical night with 12,000 in there.

New BJCC is about 4K seats smaller, too.

Where did you hear this? I watched a local news video this week saying they reduced capacity by only 100-200.

Wow. That's a change. Unless they redo the lower bowl, particularly behind the baskets, I don't see how they can only lose 100-200 seats with what they plan to do. 17500-18000 is still too big.

Why would 17500-18000 be too big? You can easily get that attendance for a big concert. It's going to be too big for the G-League no matter what the seating capacity is. Bill Harris Arena is more suited capacity wise for that team.

That said, seating will be reduced but I thought it would around 2,000 seats and not 4,000. I know it's more than 200.

Too big because 95% of the events won't come close to selling it out. The original confuration was for about 18K for basketball and 19K for concerts. But, given the post-COVID pent up demand, who knows - especially in the short-term.

Yeah your first sentence is way off. I can tell you big concerts usually sell out or get close to it. Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Pink, Carrie Underwood just to name a few have done this over the last two years. And being an Uber driver I would know because I dealt with the aftermath of these concerts and it was a hot mess.

To change the the debate slightly what size does the BJCC need to be considered for 1st round NCAA tourney games or does amenities such as sky boxes - fancy scoreboards etc. count more. We will have the extra/outside space for fan fairs.
Another factor is having the SEC headquarters pushing it could help.

My wild guess is over 20 thousand.

PS I would love Kennedy to lead us back.

The BJCC has already gotten NCAA contracts again. 1st/2nd round men's games in 2023 and a women's regional in 2025.

And seating capacity was never an issue with the BJCC; being outdated was the issue.

There are arenas with less capacity than the BJCC currently hosting 1st and 2nd Round NCAA Tourney games. Extramile Arena in Boise seats 13,900 and have hosted 1st and 2nd Round games since 1983. The reason Birmingham hasn't been considered for tournament games since 2008 was because the arena was outdated. The BJCC was able to get back into hosting the tournament because of the new renovations.

From al.com Wrote:“The comprehensive renovation and expansion of Legacy Arena makes Birmingham the ideal home to once again host NCAA tournament basketball,” said Tad Snider, Executive Director and CEO, BJCC Authority. “The improvements focus on fan experience, premium seating options, improved food and beverage options as well as new team and artist areas, with back-of-house operational improvements to support our event partners. Fans will watch the games from upgraded seats, mode.

Here's a list I found of the last 3 years. I would venture to say many of these were sellouts. These concerts likely draw in many folks from outside the metro area so dining and hotels get an economic boost also.
