RE: Rice Track and Field - NCAA Championships 1st Round
For those not watching, Grace led the race until about 2400 meters to go. Early on, she tried to let someone else take the lead because there was a decent wind (headwind for the home stretch, tailwind on the back straightaway) and she did not want to use up the energy in fighting the wind. So, she just settled in and clicked off comfortable laps of 80-82. As expected, the back of the field just kept dropping off.

The Oregon runner tried to separate from Grace, and with about 1000 to go, Grace looked fatigued. But she got her second wind, and ran a 74 last lap to win.

RE: Rice Track and Field - NCAA Championships 1st Round
The riceowls.com write-up on yesterday's results had this interesting tidbit about the hammer throw.

Freshman thrower Tara Simpson-Sullivan is in prime position to advance with Forbes to the grand stage after her mark of 64.87m (212-10) in the hammer throw and currently sits comfortably in sixth place. Simpson-Sullivan needed a solid throw on her final attempt to climb into the Top-12 and did just that with the clutch result. The event was protested due to an issue with the measuring laser and thus the entire first flight will take place again on Friday.

But if they're talking about the first flight, I imagine not very many of those throwers are likely to surpass TSS's current place?

There is a zero percent chance of her being bumped from her trip to Eugene.

Ese Amata has cleared 2.01 meters (6' 7") and 2.06 (6' 9"), but has two misses at 2.11 (6' 11"). He will have one more attempt.

RE: Rice Track and Field - NCAA Championships 1st Round
The second flight of the Men's Discus is done, with Nick Hicks in 7th place overall with a best of 55.32 meters (181' 6").

That won't hold up since the top 16 throwers are in the 3rd flight, but it's been a really good season for the freshman.

Sam Woodley is coming up in the final flight.

Ese Amata will be in the 2nd flight of 2 (unlike the throws, the 2 flights are equally divided). He comes in with a best of 2.14 meters (7' 0¼"), which places him in a tie for 22nd in the West. I think it might take 2.19 meters (7' 2¼") to advance.

[u]Men's

I was basically correct. 11 of the 12 qualifiers cleared 2.19.

Very disappointing result for Sam Woodley in the Discus - 22nd place with a best of 54.72 meters (179' 6"). His best coming in was 58.71. Nick Hicks finished 17th.

The 12th place (last qualifying) throw was 56.34m / 184-10.

Weather delay. I looked at the radar - could be hours before they begin.

No. She'll finish lower. 3rd flight, with the top throwers, has not started.

After 2 rounds, Maryam Hassan is 22nd with a 11.86 jump (38' 11").

She improved with every jump, with the best at 12.16 meters (39' 10¾"). That's 18th now, but 2 flights of 12 remain, including the final Triple Jump flight with Michelle Fokam.

A good effort in the 2nd heat by Hociel Landa , with a 7th place in a nice time of 8:59.06.
