RE: Leebron leaving
I'd suspect you would be asked to take a picture of your vaccination card and show it at one point or another in the fall. Most schools are now offering monetary rewards to students to get vaccinated. Purdue (where my oldest goes) is going to offer $10,000 scholarships to 10 different students (chosen randomly) over the summer who have been vaccinated. Baylor (where my youngest is going to go) hasn't mentioned any similar program yet, but both schools have made it clear that if you're not vaccinated, you'll be undergoing weekly covid tests in the fall.

You can pretty much assume any school that isn't forcing its students to be vaccinated will be requiring the non-vaccinated to undergo weekly covid testing.

These universities are pathetic, pushing a vaccine not even FDA approved and minimum fatality rate at the students age.

Maybe we can keep this vaccine argument stuff on The Quad? Does it have something to do with Leebron leaving after the 2022 school year?

It guess it depends what direction the new president will take on vaccinations / masks / social distancing / etc. ?

As long as the students are sui juris and the university can exert same, then I'm not sure what liability the University will assume? If someone has an underlying medical condition, but chooses not to be vaccinated then what?

Also suppose a student is vaccinated and dies from a blood clot? Then what?

Then it's a tragedy and an exceedingly rare event that should not influence the way we think about public health.

I wish it were easier for a mod to move posts than it is... and its not THAT difficult... deciding which comments can stay or should go sometimes gets challenging.... but there is also value in having input from people who won't take a conversation (too far) into the political realm as would happen in the quad??

Not a statement and essentially a question, an opinion.

I wasn't suggesting that you move the comment (or any others) to The Quad. I was trying to remind the other commenters that maybe the vaccine talk was getting off-topic enough that it shouldn't be in this thread and that they could always move the conversation to The Quad if they wanted to continue that specific discussion. Basically, I was hoping my comment would help everyone self-moderateCOGS

THANK YOU!!

I think the topic is related, IF (as you suggest) people keep it related to Pres Leebron and RIce administration rather than politics

If the world is still worried about the covid vaccine by the time Leebron leaves in a year, we will be in a world of hurt. At worst, I hope we're talking about covid boosters like we talk about the flu shot...

I believe that anything to with Leebron and his unsettling pro-China stances is relevant. Once Rice moves to a new President, perhaps there can be more focus on American students, some of whom might actually care about athletics.

By the way, China threatens nuclear war if we insist on finding if COVID was leaked from the Wuhan lab.

I hope so also, and wish so many corps were not so greedy to do business w China, increasing the risk of having IP stolen

in a related vein, H1N1 (iirc, I could be wrong but its one of those variants) has been added to the annual flu vaccine rotation... so it could easily be added to that as 'the experts' see it coming.

I think the issue is pertinent because Leebron has been fairly upfront and conservative in his actions regarding the pandemic... not all of which have I agreed with. I think 'how would you have handled (or did you handle) this situation' would be a reasonable question for a replacement. Of course they may never face such an issue, but it does represent an attitude or skillset towards crisis management,

The Presidential Search Committee will work diligently, on behalf of the entire Rice community, to recruit our university’s next great leader. With so much achieved under President Leebron’s leadership, we are confident that Rice’s extraordinary reputation will attract an outstanding group of candidates.

We intend to reach out for input from stakeholders in the coming weeks. The committee has already retained the international search firm of Russell Reynolds Associates, whose engagement team has extensive experience in higher education. We will provide you with periodic reports on the committee’s progress.

In the meantime, President Leebron continues doing great work for the university and he is very focused on the year ahead.

Thank you for your steadfast support of our university. The future for Rice is bright and we can all take great pride in what we will accomplish together.

Huda Zoghbi, Trustee

I am honored to serve as chair of this committee. More biographical information on the members will be available on our website, which we expect to go live next week.

Rob Ladd ’78
Chair, Rice University Board of Trustees

By my count, only two former student-athletes (Patterson, Ladd) and one other active sports fan, but who lives outside Texas (Huie).

Jim Crownover, like Rob Ladd, was a golfer at Rice. Three consecutive board chairs have been former athletes.
