RE: FCS Automatic Bid Situation / ASUN & WAC for '22 & '23
Big Sky Commish weighs in
Quote: The more pressing issue for Wistrcill is the conference realignment within the FCS and how the increase in automatic bids for new leagues would limit at-large bids for Big Sky teams. The relaunched Western Athletic Conference and Atlantic Sun Conference have a scheduling alliance allowing for a new automatic bid into the playoffs this year. When they become separate leagues in 2022, they should each get an automatic bid, taking away two AQ spots from the last full season in 2019.
“What I’m concerned about there is we’re one of the power conferences, we want at-large bids, so any time there’s an extra AQ, that takes away at-large bids for a conference like ours that might get four or five schools in,” Wistrcill said. “We’re monitoring that. We’re talking a lot about it. I think, to me, that’s the direct impact on us as a league because I want as many at-large opportunities as possible.”

The ASUN makes their move and Matt Brown teases more news soon. This is a huge boost for the ASUN, our partners this year. Austin Peay is not a surprise addition for the league in the least bit. They were always considered a likely addition.

Three questions?
1. Is it in the best interest of both conferences to continue some form of scheduling alliance?
2. With the likely addition of Austin Peay, has the ASUN passed the WAC as the strongest new FCS conference?
3. Which conference is most likely to move to FBS?
WAC
Abilene Christian
Dixie State/Utah Tech
Lamar
Sam Houston
Southern Utah
Stephen F Austin
Tarleton State
ASUN
Austin Peay
Central Arkansas
Eastern Kentucky
Jacksonville State
Kennesaw State
North Alabama

Matt Brown seemed to indicate there was interest in the two doing some sort of schedule collaboration going forward; it makes sense particularly these next few years when both leagues are not playing the optimal amount of league games and with the quick transition to new leagues, scheduling comes by harder (though the same can be said about a handful of leagues with the rapid changes). Either way, playing 6 league games and having 5 OOC needs - would be nice to see two of those filled by one home and one away game between the leagues

ASUN would be my guess could be a mix of both.
