Oregon School Board May Require Classrooms To Fly BLM, Pride Flags (Shot Down)
Quote:An Oregon school board updated a policy to mandate that each classroom in the school district display a Black Lives Matter and “progressive pride” flag or poster.

On May 6, the Gresham-Barlow School Board in Gresham, Oregon, updated the district’s “Flag Displays and Salutes” policy to reflect the progressive values of the board. The proposal would require the school board to provide an American flag, pride flag, and BLM flag for each classroom.

“The district shall obtain and display a U.S. flag, a progressive pride flag or poster and a Black Lives Matter flag or poster of an appropriate size for each classroom,” the policy reads.

Robyn Stowers, one of the more progressive school board members, insisted the board require all three flags to be the same size.

Stowers also demanded that any tribal government also be allowed to put a flag in each classroom upon request. The school board agreed that flying a flag at a local Oregon school district was not at the top of most tribe’s “to-do lists,” but insisted on adding the provision anyway.

“Upon request from a sovereign tribal government, a flag representing the sovereign tribal government must be displayed on, near, or within a school building during school hours,” the policy reads. “The location of the flag will be determined by the district in consultation with the requesting sovereign tribal government.”

The board received a report from the Oregon School Board Association (OSBA) stating that there may be resistance and upset parents if the board forces teachers to fly the flags in each classroom. Another board member, Kris Howatt, cited the report and questioned whether it was worth it to force the flags on all teachers. She was told by a colleague that she was “pushing white supremacy.”

Howatt: How is putting this in the classroom with teachers that are not ready with students that want to ask questions or maybe don’t, how is this going to change if we say you have to do this? Anything that’s done where it’s mandatory feels like I don’t have a choice to learn and find out about it.

Stower: Learning is always your choice, Kris. We’ve already had these discussions and I refuse to re-educate you over and over and over again. You need to do your work.

School Board Member Amanda Orozco-Beach: This is stalling. It’s pushing white supremacy. It’s getting in the way of progress … We are trying to make sure that everyone is seen and heard. This policy wouldn’t even be such a big deal if it wasn’t for board members trying to push this and get the public involved. This is just pushing unnecessary trauma and it’s really inappropriate.

During the same committee meeting, the school board also reviewed the policy on the Pledge of Allegiance. The updated policy asks students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance “at least once each week during and school year,” recite a “land acknowledgment” each week, and recite the “Black national anthem.”

Stowers proposed that students recite the “land acknowledgment” immediately following the Pledge of Allegiance.

“It makes things easy; it makes things consistent, and it makes things equitable,” Stowers said.

The board also updated the “position purpose” statement of the district’s superintendent. Orozco-Beach proposed that the statement rely more heavily on the board’s commitment to equity.

“I wanted to include that we need to have a leader that understands that public schools are inherently racist institutions and they need to be committed to collaborate and work with the board to eliminate white supremacy culture in Gresham-Barlow schools,” Orozco-Beach said. “Our commitment to eliminating institutional racism and I think it’s important that if we hire our next superintendent that they would follow those values.”

The US flag represents everyone equally. It promotes inclusion for everyone to participate in the American Dream. Whereas the pride flag and Black Lives Matter flags only create exclusion.

RE: Oregon School Board May Require Classrooms To Fly BLM, Pride Flags
Quote:An Oregon school board shot down an updated policy that would have mandated classrooms in the Gresham-Barlow school district to display Black Lives Matter and “progressive pride” flags or posters.

On May 6, the Gresham-Barlow School Board updated the district’s “Flag Displays and Salutes” policy to require that the school board provide an American flag, pride flag, and BLM flag for each classroom. The policy gained virtually no support among board members. Just two of the board’s most progressive members voted in favor of the revised policy.

Robyn Stowers, a school board member in favor of the flag policy, launched into a tirade about the alleged importance of the flags before the board took a vote. She began by apologizing to students for the “traumatic experience” of having to debate a flag policy.

“As a board member, I would like to apologize to our students for this traumatic experience. All students deserve to be seen, heard, and respected. Your identities and your human rights should not be up for public debate,” Stowers said. “The intention of this policy is to create safe, welcoming, inclusive spaces for all students. To do that, we must first accept that not all students in this district have the privilege [of] feeling safe and represented in the classroom environment. We must accept and understand that institutional racism and oppression is real so that we can take the steps to eradicate them from our schools.”

Stowers continued by listing the reasons why the American flag is inappropriate to fly.

“The United States is not perfect,” Stowers said. “Under the American flag, there is a history of attempted genocide of Native Americans, stolen land, broken treaties, Native American boarding schools, enslavement of black people, segregation, Jim Crow, police brutality, Japanese internment camps, Chinese exclusion act, forced acts of sterilization, anti-LGBTQ laws, exploitation of migrant workers, and other human rights violations at the southern border, just to name a few.”

At the end of her tirade, Stowers claimed that having the progressive pride flag would “literally save lives” and played the “Black National Anthem” for the school board.

Opponents of the policy claimed that the BLM flag represented a political message and it was not the job of schools to side with a political organization. School board member Blake Peterson said he found the embrace of BLM to be “inappropriate.”

“I think there are valid perspectives within our community that the BLM flag, in particular, is representative of an organization with clear objectives. Some of those are pronouncedly political objectives, and I think it’s inappropriate for us to side with an [political] organization.”

Another opponent, school board member Mayra Gómez, said that she did not believe the flags would impact students.

“I don’t think that flags are going to make a difference,” Gómez said. “Our students know when we care about them. Our students know who their true allies are. And I’m not going to be a part of creating a culture of fake allies.”

The school board voted down the policy along a 5-2 margin.

Following the no vote, Stowers berated her colleagues for not supporting BLM or the LGBT community.

“I would like clarification on what exactly,” Stowers asked. “Is it the BLM flag? Or is it the LGBT communities that you don’t support? Or is it both?”

Going to be?
Look at the those who have been in the streets protesting for the last year and a half.

I retired two years ago mainly because of the quality of job applicants. I couldn’t hire forklift drivers in Shelbyville, KY, Small Town USA, for $22.00 to start. Those that did apply couldn’t pass the drug screen. I’m not talking just weed either. Meth and heroin were what usually kept me from hiring most.

I feel sorry for anyone in Operations Management today like I was for 40 plus years. I have watched the quality of applicants drop steadily for years. It bottomed out in 2016.

I simply got tired of looking for people that aren’t there.

To most southerners, the Confederate flag is a symbol of southern identity or heritage (not a symbol of hate). We are Southern culturally first and foremost.

In the world of leftist control those days are long gone.

As evidenced by the US's pathetic education ranking among world nations.

I can respect that but the flag is the official flag of the Confederate States of America which fought against the United States in order to preserve the institution of slavery.

You understand that right?

I understand the motivations of the war. The South fought for independence (with a strong motivating factor being the preservation of slavery) and the North fought to force the South to remain in the Union (not primarily to end slavery as evidenced by Lincoln's writings at the time). Many Southerners would prefer self-governence with a confederation of southern states over the status quo. Basically a southern Confederacy without the racism or slavery. Nothing wrong with wanting self-governance. I think we'd all be better off voluntarily splitting the country up into like minded regions based upon culture.

As liberal of progressive, would you prefer to live in a nation made up of pacific states, e.g. a union of California, Oregon, and Washington? Just curious.

First, there were several official flags of the Confederacy.

[Image: 255px-Flag_of_the_Confederate_States_of_...29.svg.png]
1st National Flag of the Confederate States of America (C.S.A.)
The Stars and Bars
November 28, 1861 – May 1, 1863

[Image: 210px-Flag_of_the_Confederate_States_of_...29.svg.png]
2nd National Flag of C.S.A.
The Stainless Banner
May 1, 1863 - March 4, 1865

[Image: 158px-Flag_of_the_Confederate_States_of_...29.svg.png]
3rd National Flag of C.S.A.
The Blood-Stained Banner
March 4, 1865 - End of War

However, the flag typically referred to today as the Confederate Flag was never an official flag of the C.S.A.

Per wikipedia:
Quote:Though never having historically represented the Confederate States of America as a country, nor having been officially recognized as one of its national flags, the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia and its variants are now flag types commonly referred to as the Confederate Flag.

[Image: 200px-North_Virginia_Third_Bunting.svg.png]
The Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia

Second, and possibly more important, is the fact that the Democratic Party was the party of slavery. Southern members of the Democratic Party are the ones who broke away from the Union and formed their own nation. And their motive was explicitly to preserve and defend slavery based upon their idea that the white man was superior to the black man.

So, those who despise the Confederate flag and everything for which it stood should make it paramount to stand against the Democratic Party and everything it stood for. In fact, based on today's leftist cancel culture the Democratic Party should be abolished.
