NCAA To Meet On Athlete Endorsements
A lot of the press on these stories is mostly BS. Some top athletes in FB and BB will probably get endorsements, and maybe national champions in lesser sports getting a shoe endorsement or something. But for 98% of athletes it will mean nothing, or close to it.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division I Council plans to act on legislative proposals next month that would allow athletes to be paid to be sponsors, social media influencers and product endorsers, the governing body for college sports announced Wednesday.

The council will take up the issue at its meeting June 22-23 with the goal of having legislation in place by July 1. That would provide greater consistency in the name, image and likeness opportunities available to student-athletes nationally as state laws become effective on or around that date.

RE: NCAA To Meet On Athlete Endorsements
Kids can be charismatic and creative. It doesn't have to be about athletic skill and endorsements but even so, if the local car dealer wants to put the punter into a commercial because of the connection to the football team, the punter should get paid. Just like any other kid on campus that does a commercial or endorsement.

I'm absolutely against ANY money for play coming from the university or any source but for sure I see it problematic someone ELSE making money off a kid's face and the kid not being able to do it too.

Big question is it the kid that is driving the value or the institution? My thing is the majority of college athletes are interchangeable. I can take a top team's
RB,QB, etc. seldom would their own individual value bring a significant difference effecting revenue streams from year to year.

We are not slaves to what schools we go to, what job we work on or who we associate with. If you're "famous" by proxy, they get nothing if you're not using their "name" in your business as they have been doing to these athletes for decades.

I don't care what players do, I just don't like all the hype about some offensive lineman bringing in a ton of cash. Now if you're a star QB at Alabama you could probably bring in some good cash IN Alabama. Someone in Ohio could care less. There are plenty of star players in the NFL and NBA who get few if any endorsements.

You have to be a special kind of prick to believe these athletes shouldn't be getting paid. Not guys who play for UT or BG, because those schools don't pack a stadium full of 80,000 people, but the Ohio States and the Notre Dames of the world should be paying their players. It's about dollars, it's about math, it's about revenue.

No one appreciates being called a "prick," I'll respectfully disagree.

Athletes looking to get "paid" to play sports can go elsewhere. If there's a market, someone will start a league. Start their own league. And I do not see how anyone can distinguish between the big money schools and Toledo, just because they've developed a better revenue stream. They're playing by the same rules and within the same organization.

Universities are deviating enough from their stated purpose in sports. They are not minor professional leagues and should not cross that line.

I distinguish between someone getting paid to play sports for a University and someone having the same right as anyone else on campus to market their name, regardless that name became known through their participation in sports. If someone wants to put them into a commercial, as long as the University isn't mentioned I think that should be their right.
