For our first game on Thursday at 7: If Elon beats W&M, we’ll be facing Elon. If W&M beats Elon, we’ll face whoever wins the Charleston-Towson game.

The road to Omaha begins at Brooks Field. Go Hawks!

2021 CAA Baseball Tournament (5/26-5/30, Brooks Field)
Just saw a fb post from our friend over at The Seahawk Perch that UNCW is the only CAA to qualify for every single CAA tournament.

Let’s go Hawks!

Yep! We've participated in all 35 tournaments, even in those couple of seasons where the CAA stupidly decided to drop the field to 4 teams to save money on travel costs.

RE: 2021 CAA Baseball Tournament (5/26-5/30, Brooks Field)
Here's the all-time CAA Baseball Championships leaderboard for the CAA, including teams that have departed:

1. ECU: 7 ('87, '89, '90, '91, '93, '99, '00)
2. UNCW: 6 ('04, '06, '12, '15, '18, '19)
3. VCU: 5 ('02, '03, '05, '07, '10)
4. Richmond: 3 ('86, '97, '98)
Old Dominion: 3 ('94, '95, '96)
6. William & Mary: 2 ('01, '16)
James Madison: 2 ('08, '11)
George Mason: 2 ('88, '92)
9. Delaware: 1 ('17)
Charleston: 1 ('14)
Towson: 1 ('13)
Georgia State: 1 ('09)

Northeastern and Elon are each looking for their first CAA title at the 2021 tournament. The rest of this year's field have all won the CAA Tournament before, with only us and W&M having done so more than once.

The 2016 tourney still bothers me. We should’ve won that one too.

Yep, we've had some excellent teams who felt short at the CAA Tournament. Shows how unpredictable baseball can be sometimes, especially in a tournament setting.

And it also demonstrates how important it is to have a robust OOC slate, so you can give yourself every opportunity to get an at-large bid. We've done very well at that over the years. In nearly half of our seasons since 2003, we've given the committee a resume so strong they would have no choice to put us in in the instances where we didn't win the tournament.

Roupp Earns CAA Pitcher of the Year Honors

Seven Seahawks earned all-conference honors

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Led by Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year Landen Roupp, UNCW landed seven players on the league's all-conference squads announced on Tuesday.

The Seahawks had five players on the first team, marking the fourth time in program history they had at least five with the last being in 2016. Roupp is the fourth Seahawk to be named pitcher of the year, joining Mat Batts (2013, 2014), Ryan Foster (2016) and Alex Royalty (2017).

"During this challenging year, I'm proud of the way our players responded on the field, in the classroom and during times of traveling," said Head Coach Randy Hood. "These honors are indicative of the daily efforts and hard work our student-athletes endured to be successful. I'd like to congratulate our seven award winners and am looking forward to them competing with their teammates this week in the conference tournament."

Roupp was joined by battery mate Matt Suggs on the first team along with Cole Weiss, Brooks Baldwin and Hunter Hodges. Kip Brandenburg and Adam Smith were second-team honorees and Hodges was also named to the All-Rookie squad.

Roupp entered the season as the league's Preseason Player of the Year and didn't disappoint, entering this week's championship tournament with a 7-4 record and a 2.75 earned run average over the course of a league-leading 88.1 innings in 14 starts. Opponents hit just .206 against him this spring and in conference play, he allowed a mere five extra base hits.

Roupp compiled a 4-1 record in seven conference starts and fashioned a 1.70 ERA. He led the circuit with 97 strikeouts and tied for the lead with those 14 starts.

Suggs played in a career-high 47 games for the Seahawks and posted career-best numbers of a .282 batting average, 29 runs scored, 48 hits, 10 doubles, 11 home runs, ranking third in the CAA, and 36 runs batted in. Behind the plate, Suggs threw out 16 potential base stealers, helped the pitching staff post a 3.87 ERA and committed just two errors.

Weiss was named to the first team for the second time and is a three-time All-CAA honoree. He finished the regular season with a .275 batting average, scored 32 runs and drove in 35, ranking third on the team. In conference play, he hit .297 and three of his five home runs on the season came in the CAA.

Baldwin led the Seahawks in nearly every offensive category in 2021. He hit a team-high 13 home runs, scored 44 runs, knocked in 42, collected a league-leading 129 total bases and slugged .587. He became the first Seahawk since Andrew Cain in 2012 to hit 10 or more home runs and steal at least 10 bases, finishing with 11.

Hodges, who also was named to the All-Rookie team, rounds out the first-team honorees for the Seahawks. The freshman righthander was a vital part of the bullpen, finishing with a 2-2 record and three saves in 22 appearances. He struck out 48 in 37.1 innings while holding opponents to a meager .140 batting average overall and .073 in conference play, where he allowed just four hits.

Brandenburg carries a .298 batting average overall into the conference tournament and hit .338 in conference play. In his first full season with the program, he led the Seahawks with 14 doubles and was second on the club with 41 runs scored. Brandenburg slugged .453 and reached base at a .396 clip. He strung together a 20-game hitting streak to open the season.

Smith, meanwhile, stepped into the starting rotation midway through the season after serving as the closer. He led the staff with a 2.28 ERA, went 5-1 and converted three saves. He finished with 55 strikeouts in 55.1 innings, all career-bests for the righthander. He made nine appearances in conference play, struck out 33 in 31.2 innings and compiled a 1.442 ERA.

RE: 2021 CAA Baseball Tournament (5/26-5/30, Brooks Field)
The tournament begins today at noon, with Charleston facing off with Towson.

We won’t know who we’ll be facing until the day concludes, as the Elon-W&M result will dictate which game’s winner plays us or NU.

It doesn’t matter much to me who we face. All 3 teams we could end up facing (it can’t be W&M) will be tough but obviously beatable.

By the way, I know we like to have threads specifically devoted to our games during the CAA Tournament. So once we know who our opponent will be tomorrow I'll edit the game thread I just posted for our game slot (Thursday night - 7 PM).

We can just use this thread as more of a general CAA Tournament thread to discuss the non-UNCW games going on.

Sound good?

Looks like Charleston, is NOT throwing any of their weekend pitchers (William Privette, Trey Pooser, Connor Campbell) today against Towson.

They're using Jordan Carr instead, who has been used as a midweek guy and reliever over the course of the season. This will just be his 6th start of the season. The other 16 times he's appeared this year has been out of the pen.

Towson is countering with their Friday guy, Josh Seils. For that reason alone, I want Towson to win. Not only so we'd be facing their # 2 in a situation where we end up facing the Tigers, but also so Charleston's decision to not use a weekend guy backfires on them and sends them to the loser's bracket.

Interesting decision there by Charleston, that's for sure!

The tournament is underway! Towson goes down quickly, 1-2-3, to begin the game. No score, bottom 1st.

Charleston put up 2 in the bottom of the 1st, but Towson responded 2 innings later with a 3-run inning of their own.

Carr was lifted by the Cougars after that rough 3rd inning, at which point they put in their Friday guy, Privette.

Interesting choices all around by the Charleston coaching staff. Why not start a weekend guy? And if the plan going in was to try to avoid using one of your weekend guys until tomorrow, why burn one in relief now? And your Friday starter, no less?

When it comes to tournament play, "getting cute" can go south real quick. Charleston still may well win this game but the journey to that result will have ended up being a pretty backwards one.

3-2 Towson, top 5th.

Its now 5-3 Charleston in the top of the 7th. They just chased Towson's starter, Seils, out of the game in the bottom of the 6th after 5.2 innings of work.

Privette has pitched 3 superb innings in relief for the Cougars and it appears he remains in to pitch the 7th.
