We have a serious problem at the one spot. Jalen isn’t ready to carry the pressure. I foresee another vcu loss. Pains me to think about it.

We have Hunter and Wade doing the heavy lifting at PG. We'll be fine.

RE: ODU hoops 21-22 | Predicting the starters
Its really odd to me that everyone thinks we have a problem at the only spots we don't really have a problem. We have a problem at the 2,3, and kinda at the 4, but everyone is always concerned about the 1 and 5, which have dudes that can do at least an adequate job.

RE: ODU hoops 21-22 | Predicting the starters
I agree for the most part. Im more concerned about the 4 spot than anything else but there are also concerns on the perimeter.

I think Jaylin can be a solid PG. The 5 spot is probably are strongest spot with Kalu/Trice/Morris. Im not sure why anyone would suggest Wade play the point.

Its what we do between the 1 and 5 that is the primary concern. Oliver, Wade, Long, O'Connell, Smith.

I would guess Imo backs up the PG spot and Johnson/Stines fight for minutes at combo guard. Wade/Long will probably play the most minutes at the 4 pot but I'd like another body at the 4. Someone that can open up the lane for Kalu.

I think Wade will backup point some unless somebody really impresses. Not that I am advocating for that, but based on how JJ has done things in the past, I think the most likely scenario is that Hunter plays about 38 minutes per game, and Wade plays every position on the floor except the 5.

If Wade is the backup PG, our guard situation may be pretty bad.

Wade is a slasher/defender. He's not a faciliator, nor is he a shooter. He's best deployed in spots were he can drive to the hole (for him, mainly baseline).

RE: ODU hoops 21-22 | Predicting the starters
Wade is attempting to come back from two serious injuries and hasn't played for the last season and a half. It's one thing to predict what position or how much he will play. It's something else to pretend to know with surety what kind of player he will be this season - i.e. can do this, can't do that. He may well have lost some of his quickness due to the multiple leg injuries making him less effective at driving by people than he was before. He might have been doing a lot of shooting and improved on that since the last time we saw him. Bottom line is that we won't know till we get reports back stating how he looked on the practice court competing against his teammates.

I don't disagree with you, I am just saying what I think will happen.

Don't underestimate Essien, 3* PG who played HS in Dallas area and key to the team's advance to title game. At some point in the season, he'll contribute. BTW, all the newcomers are already on campus, working out.

Why not 5?? He has the size! (6'5")

I'm saying Wade would make an adequate and known quantity at the backup PG position, because he's previously played that role in limited minutes. If we have better options than Wade, all the better.

I hope Jalen steps up to the roll this year. It’s the reason he signed with us - to take over PG this year. He flashed a couple of games last year, but he is going to need to play with consistency this year. I’m not concerned he doesn’t shoot well nor finish at the rim, but he will need to facilitate with minimal TOs consistently. I’m not worried about any of the other positions, other than I would like to have a true five w/talent.

Wade played a good deal of point and was relatively effective. How he is doing with the injuries is another question.

I think Jalen will be a better facilitator than Curry. The question is where the hell are the points going to come from with Curry gone. Last year's team was pretty bad when Curry wasn't scoring 20+. It's not like you just plug another piece in when the guy scoring all the points was doing almost all of his scoring on his own, not within the structure of an offense.

RE: ODU hoops 21-22 | Predicting the starters
Count me out of the Curry fan club… I respect his toughness and appreciate what he did here but he wasn’t a point guard at all. I thought we stood around and watched him dribble. His jump shot was horrendous both years while at ODU. The other team begged him to shoot jumpers. His vision and ability to make a play for someone else was lacking as well. He just dominated the ball soo much, especially after Wade went down. I give him credit though, he shot the ball well in his last few games and people will remember that and he made some clutch plays down the stretch of ball games. Again I appreciate what he did and wish him luck but I think we will move the ball better this upcoming year band our outside shooting is bound to improve at least a little.

Jaylin was a breath of fresh air all year I thought. Understood what the coaches wanted him to do and I truly believe his ceiling is much higher. The ball definitely moved better when he was on the court I thought. He’s a much better defender, he’s quicker and appears more athletic to me. He has a much higher ceiling as a jump shooter as well. I know his percentages aren’t great but it’s a smaller sample size. He will definitely start and I think Imo will back him up. Im excited about the new point guard play going forward.

RE: ODU hoops 21-22 | Predicting the starters
I like Curry and he carried us at times for sure. Curry did have issues, major issues, on defense. He also was not really someone that was good at getting others involved and was minimal as a threat outside of the paint. I think it did limit us at times.

Having said that, he was the one guy that could actually get us a bucket. I hope with the transition to Hunter that it improves the defense and also the players around him.

I just call him Hunter. He could use a nickname though. Wish I could think of one.

RE: ODU hoops 21-22 | Predicting the starters
I'm probably wrong since he got a P5 offer, but I didn't like what Curry brought. He was the best player on a bad team, but that doesn't work with any kind of consistency. We had no choice but to let him carry us due to our shortcomings, but teams are better when everyone isn't standing around watching one player ball hog. Watching good mid-majors in the tournament slinging the ball all over the place and observing the chemistry made me envious. Hoping to see better team basketball this season. We'll see.
