Do you ever root for your rival team
I do when they don't play us so when we play them more is on the line. I have friends who always want vcu to be 0-30.

Ask five Georgetown fans who its rival school is and you probably get five different answers (e.g., Syracuse, Notre Dame, Maryland, Villanova, Boston College) The common thread is none of them play the Hoyas in football.

I just did that a week ago. I rooted for BYU to beat Lewis in their semifinal match in the NCAA men’s volleyball tournament so the Cougars could move on to play Hawaii for the title. Amazingly it worked out according to plan as Hawaii swept BYU the next day to win the 2021 national championship.

Like many here in the Bayou City, I double-dipped with a full-time degree from Rice, then a part time MBA from UH. I enjoy watching the Coogs success, except when it is a rivalry game with the Owls.

RE: Do you ever root for your rival team
When it comes to arch rival Michigan—I want to see them win OOC games, although I fully enjoy results like the App St game from over a decade ago. I don’t think the Michigan football program has ever quite psychologically recovered from that loss.

For Cincinnati’s rivals, I have mixed feelings. I absolutely want to see their conference mates do well but for former rivals that now refuse to schedule the Bearcats like Louisville and WVU, I wish them the worst. I wish Miami the best—it’s a mismatched rivalry from a bygone era. Maybe it’s because I didn’t grow up in Cincinnati but I don’t have the passionate hate for Xavier that others do.

Never, unless something dramatically important to us is on the line. And even then "root" is too strong a word.

E.g., if for some reason UCF had to beat Memphis for USF to advance to the AAC title game, I would *hope* that UCF won, but I couldn't *root* for them to do so. I wouldn't watch the game, just check the score on my phone every hour or so, and it wouldn't upset me much if they lost, LOL.

Depends. Who do you consider to be Illinois'/Penn State's rival?

RE: Do you ever root for your rival team
Unfortunately you almost have to in football ever since the old BCS formula and now the CFP committee likes to take SOS into account when determining its rankings.

This is Iowa fans delimna since Iowa always plays Iowa State early in September. Win or lose, Iowa fans are forced to root for Iowa State the rest of the season because every Iowa State win helps Iowa's SOS. Well except for the pandemic year of 2020 when Iowa and Iowa State did not play.

RE: Do you ever root for your rival team
Yes. When facing another conference school in a Bowl game or Basketball game. I always want Michigan to be undefeated when they face Ohio State. Same for when Fresno State faces SJSU. I want the game to be of the most importance, I want the conference to have the strongest rankings.

Mind you I never root for Michigan when they play Indiana or Northwestern, nor Fresno State when they play Utah State or New Mexico. But When Michigan plays Virginia or Fresno State play SMU, of course I root for the conference,

My loyalties are split because I grew up in Columbus, but went to HS in the Bay Area and college at SJSU -- easy because they never play and they are at different levels. My Ohio loyalty is stronger.

Only one of these schools are in Georgetown's current conference. Blame realignment. Some schools lose their rivals. Other schools get to keep theirs.

I want the Gators to win the SEC. All they have to do is lose the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Although I root for a giant sinkhole to open up under the stadium when they play Miami.

In basketball it is a resounding NO. Eggszavier. Can't stand 'em. In no circumstances could I ever root for or support them. None. Notta. Zilch'o. I feel better already.

To this Hoya fan, the answer to that question is still obvious - Syracuse. Even over Villanova. Definitely the team I want us to beat most.

RE: Do you ever root for your rival team
As a Kansas grad, I do cheer for Kansas State when they are not playing KU or if their winning a game hurts KU. KSU a is my second favorite team in the conference. Since I no longer live in Kansas, I tend to feel a bond with my fellow Kansans. Not sure that would be the case if I still lived in Kansas and the rivalry was more front and center.

I also believe that most KSU fans never cheer for KU.
