He led nationally ranked St.Benedict’s Prep located in Newark, New Jersey, to a State Prep title and in to the eight -team National HS Tournament in which he scored 18 points in a one point loss to La Lumierre, who they beat earlier in the year.

Since I know and have worked with Scott, here’s my insight into his play.

Scott’s freshman year at Kennesaw State he came off the bench and In his only start scored 33-points against Stetson. Shot 38.5 percent on three’s in conference play.

Playing his sophomore year, Scott scored 26-points against Butler, 22-points coming in the second half. He scored 20-points against NJIT in the second half. Against Texas Tech and Univ. Of Washington, he scored 19-points, against Florida State he scored 17-points. He averaged 17.3 points per game his sophomore year. Shot 36.8 percent on three’s in conference play. Shot 42.5 percent (17-40) on three’s in the seven conference games played in February.

When he transferred from KSU, he was rated 7th best transfer in the nation, and drew offers from Virginia Tech,Maryland, Dayton, and Nevada, but chose Temple.

At Temple, when he played many minutes in conference play he shot and scored well. As playing against UConn in a double overtime Temple win, he scored 25-points, including shooting 9-11 on two’s and 7-7 on two point jumps (outplayed James Bouknight), and 22- points against SMU ( 7-7 on two-point jump shots ) Finished conference play shooting 54.7 percent on two’s, the highest percentage for any guard in the conference.

Has a great first step and gets by defenders with ease. Can shoot well off his dribble from anywhere on the court. Has a high Bb IQ. Is terrific in the open court.

Outstanding EMU Asst.Coach Trice was one of his coaches at Temple.

At Portland State, he played PG and in his second start against Oregon State he led PSU from a 17-point deficit, made the Elite Eight in this year’s NCAA tournament, he led PSU from a PSU deficit as PSU outscored OSU 45-35 in a second half comeback that fell just short of winning the game. He scored 13-points on the second half that included four three-point plays.

He led PSU in scoring in conference play averaging 15.7 ppg in conference play, (high of 26-points against Weber State) and averaged shooting 35.7 percent on three’s. Shot 42.5 percent on three’s in 12 of 14 conference games.

He also led PSU in total rebounds at 5.3 per game, including 1.7 offensive rebounds per game, 1.8 steals, 3.2 assists, and led team in number of foul shots. Shot poorly at the foul line, but shot at 80 percent at the foul line at KSU. He averaged 1.8 steals per game in conference play at PSU, the second best in conference play. Was ranked among the conference leaders in almost every category in conference play.

His individual game highs, were 26 points, 14 total rebounds,6 offensive rebounds, 7-assists,and 6 steals.

He had an outstanding defensive rating of 95 points per 100 possessions.

As for turnovers, he didn’t start playing PG till four games into the season with no preseason preparation. Although his turnover rate of 3.1 per game was a little high in conference play, his turnovers were of such a nature that only 13-points were scored off his turnovers in conference play. His dribble was rarely stolen nor his passes intercepted that resulted fin easy hoops.

As a combo guard, Scott can play either PG, SG, or even SF. Fully expect that he will earn starting for EMU.

Best I not post here going forward but did want to share some info on James Scott.

Have enjoyed reading EMU’s fans insightful and respectful posts here, and look forward to following your takes on this up-coming season. EMU has hired an outstanding HC and look forward to his continuing to sign terrific recruits.

Thanks for the info sir! Although I do wish you would stick around, I understand.

The conference statistical splits tell us that we may be getting a gem in Scott.

Can you tell us why he didn’t play more minutes at Temple?

What Miggy didn't tell you is that he's Scott's shooting coach, and has had it out for Temple since Scott transferred out.

Scott is a streaky scorer, and doesn't play a lick of defense. He had no business playing at the AAC level, which is pretty obvious based on where else he's played, and who else has wanted him.

He's a good fit at the MAC level, but he'll always be remembered as just a guy and nothing else, despite whatever bull**** numbers Miggy chooses to pump up Scott and trash other better players.

RE: New Heath Transfer
often in college basketball it's finding the right level for your game to flourish. Temple is trying to compete for A-10 titles. being average in that league is a disappointment. EMU is one of the lowest profile and expectations basketball programs in the MAC. Putting a team that can be middle of the pack, respectable in non-conf and fairly exciting on the court is the short term objective. this kid seems like a great fit at EMU at this moment.

Agree with your assessment.

But I’m a bit more optimistic going forward this season as I sense EMU is entering a whole new era similar to when Heath took Kent State to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament.

When EMU is filled with a full roster and starts play, one will know how EMU compares other teams both in the MAC, and teams through-out the nation.

All I can say is that Scott has proved that he can compete well against the nation’s best, as playing for PSU against Oregon State that made it to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament, Scott was the high scorer of all players who played in that game. His 16-points came on only 7 fga’s.

Am quite confident EMU’s HC may well recruit other players of Scott’s caliber. He has already up-graded the program with other transfers, including a 25 ppg JUCO scorer, and freshmen recruits, including one that blocked 8 shots in his last game. The HC still has more slots to fill with quality players. How long it will take for the team to gel only time will tell. But do think EMU has a good chance to be among the best in the MAC conference this season.

RE: New Heath Transfer
(05-17-2021 08:30 AM)Miggy Wrote:  Thanks holybovine for your generous comments.

My Temple posts have pointed out what I thought Temple could do to win more games. The first year when Scott first transferred to Temple and when Temple had finished the prior year 16-15, I looked at Temple ‘s stats and could see that Temple would have finished with a better record if Temple l’s younger players Nate Pierre Louis, Dre Perry, and Moorman, had played both played more as there stats were better than other players who played more than they do.

I predicted that Temple would having a winning record the following year because those players would play more and so-so starters had departed. That occurred as Temple went 23-10 record, 13-5 in conference play. I predicted Temple’s exact record even though it was a lucky guess. Scott was at Temple that season but was ineligible play under NCAA transfer rules

Even with Temple finished 23-10, I pointed out certain things the former HC could have done to have had a better record.

Scott upon joining the team was still allowed to play in team scrimmages, and in his first set of scrimmages, Scott shot 9-20 three’s and outscored all other Temple players. During the season playing with the second unit. They regularly beat the first unit that went on to win 23 games.

In the following season, with a new HC and Scott coming off the bench, Temple finished with a 16-17 record, and 8-10 in conference play. I pointed out at the time that Scott, Perry, and Hamilton, all should have both played and shot more, and that Alani Moore should have shot more than he did. As some starters who shot a lot, shot poorly.

Also said Temple should have played a pressure defense more so the weaknesses of their poor shooters who have been hidden. And that Temple should have also plAyed more all ball that was so successful when they employed it.

I was also disappointed that Scott, Hamilton, Perry, and Alani Moore weren’t utilized properly when they played, for Temple would have had a far better record if they had.

Temple has had a consistent problem of favoring upperclassman over better shooting younger players.

Even after Scott and Hamilton departing, and Temple finishing with a 5-11 rcord this past season, I pointed out how Temple’s transfer-in Brandon Barry, a 45 percent three point-shooter who played over 30 mpg, only averaged 5 fga’s per game, while other players with poor shooting percentages shot far more.

So all my posts regarding Temple, I wanted temple win more, just as zany fan hoped for.

Scott moved on to a better situation first at PSU, and now at EMU, where he’ll be playing for a great HC. One has to only review Heath’s stellar coaching record to see that.

Scott will be pursuing at EMU a graduate degree in building construction that wasn’t offered at PSU

Teams in all the top conferences have pursued Scott and he’s been exceptional playing the nation’s top teams. That does happen if the player is consider either a streaky shooter of a poor defender. The poster is simply clueless, but entitled to his warped opinion.

Scott is not a streaky shooter. It’s just at times he doesn’t realize at times over his shooting form is off, that can be is easily corrected. You don’t shoot 38.5 percent on three’s in conference play at KSU and ;2.4 percent there on three’s in the last 7 games of the season and consider the shooter a streaky shooter. St PSU, he shot 42.5 percent on three’s in 12 out of conference games. That’s not a streaky shooter. Nor would shooting 54.7 percent on two’s at Temple in conference play is streaky. Nor would I ever say that Scott who consistently shoots the lights out against the nations best teams.

Nor would I say that Scott is a bad defender, as he’s among the nation’s top ball stealers at 1.8 per game. and averaged 5.3 rebounds per game from the PG position at PSU. Rebounds are part of defense the last time I looked. On defense at Temple Scott played zone whereby he was responsible for two players. I don’t think the poster has a clue that was happening. He did not play man to man. An NBA scout looked at his videos and told me his defense is fine.

Scott is going to thrive under HC Heath. Scott has never played in up temp offense. He will thrive on fast breaks.

On a personal note, for many years I enjoyed a positive reputation, but that change when I went on the AAC board and said that Houston had a gimmicky offensive system but would falter when they faced a good team in the NCAA tournament when they faced a good rebounding team who didn’t turn the ball over much. Houston had an easy path to the final four as they played low seeded teams. Even so they were lucky to beat Rutgers who they trailed by some 10 points with 5 minutes to go.

Houston also had many low 30 point scoring in halves in the tournament.

Before the Final Four Baylor game, I wrote that Houston would lose badly and that the game would be over by half-time. Houston fans went ballistic and my reputation plummeted. It had also declined earlier when I pointed out the gimmick of Houston’s offensive system.

But I take solace by the fact I was proved right as Houston scored but 20 points in the first half playing Baylor, and only one Houston player scored more than 3-point of Houston’s points in the first half. Houston trailed Baylor by 24 points.

Returning to Temple, close to 50,000 viewers have looked at my Temple posts over the years. Wish Temple only the best.

Miggy, thanks for your contributions to the board. I've watched a couple of highlight videos and he can definitely fill it up. I'm wondering if you can say anything about the development of his left hand. Everything I have seen shows a heavy reliance on the right. When he goes left, it's 1-2 dribbles and then pulling up. Any thoughts?

RE: New Heath Transfer
Temple averaged but 65 ppg in conference play last season, and it’s interior defense needed shoring up. As such, Temple signing a freshman big who averaged just 1 ppg playing 9.7 mpg is not what Temple needs. Posters on another board said alumni were glad to see him transfer out as he was lost on the court at times. Saying the above is not trashing a freshman recruit as the poster contends, instead it’s reporting his stats and what others say about him.

Nor is my pointing out that another freshman recruit oddly splits his legs in the air while shooting a jump shot thrashing a the recruit. It’s nilust an observation.

As for Temple’s HC, Temple alumni on the Temple Cherry and White Board have expressed their disappointment in the HC, recruitment, and the teams performance. Pointing such out when Temple has gone from a good record to a bad record very quickly is not thrashing Temple’s
bb program.

No reason to discuss Temple here anymore. Hope they have a fine season

Yeah, I'm insecure. This lunatic can't help himself shitting all over our basketball program in a thread that had nothing to do with our program. He doesn't discuss Scott. He has the Temple board to himself to constantly post told ya sos when we're losing.

Even in this thread, he's now trashing our transfer from Wake, who is uber talented, but raw, and worth taking a flier on considering his true freshman year didn't count because of Covid rules.

"No need to discuss Temple here", but he'll continue to on our board which he's mutinied. Ask him why he didn't post on the Portland State board last year. Ask him why he won't stop posting on our board to post on the latest stop on James Monty Scott's world tour.

Eh, we appreciate his input.

I think it speaks volumes that you are so insecure about Temple basketball that you would come over here to trash these individuals. You must miss Scott at some level. Otherwise, why bother?

I'm insecure? Miggy, a person who has a personal interest in his college career, a person with zero academic connection to Temple, has taken over our board on here with a running nonsensical thread trashing Temple, our coach, and even our incoming recruits who are in high school.

So I'm sorry if I'm not going to take some clownshoe taking a big dump all over my alma mater because we 'wronged' his star pupil only for him to end up at Portland State and Eastern Michigan for a reason.

No offense, but we neither know nor care about what is happening on the Temple board. You brought this nonsense to our site, not vice versa.

Yeah I wish these two would go out and duel or something. Have endless biting back and forth detracts from the joy of adding a player who could help us win next season. Can I also point out the reputation ratings of both of the "guest" posters?

He's like 90 years old. It would be embarrassing.

Bottom line: Monty Scott is a fine college player. He was a bad fit at Temple, and we were left disappointed he didn't perform better. He's had better success at lower levels, and should be successful at EMU. That should've been the end of Miggy/Epperman(his other username) and his posting about Temple. We moved on from Monty Scott. He has needed to move on from Temple.

He's not a Temple fan, and needs to spend his time doing anything other than listening to our podcasts for Temple fans, and critiquing our fans, message board editors and podcast hosts, and our basketball team.

For a Temple poster to come on this site to get even for my comments about Temple bb, by putting down a Temple player who played for Temple, shows all you need to know about the poster.

And for the poster to mislead EMU fans, ignoring that teams far better than Temple, have offered Scott scholarships throughout his career, including after he entered the transfer portal for this upcoming season.

HC Heath recent comments acknowledged Scott’s accomplishments by recently saying that Scott been “successful” at every school he played for, and is consistent with offers Scott has received.

And the fact that Temple had lost to three conference opponents by large margins when Scott played few minutes, but he then helped lead Temple to wins against those same teams. clearly shows how clueless the poster is claiming Scott was not up to Temple standards.

Scott benefited greatly by transferring to Portland State where he learned to also play the PG position. Such will give EMU more options in utilizing Scott’s immense skill-set.

I came on this site to provide info on Scott and did so. I also said that I would not be making further posts, but would answer appropriate questions posed to me.

I apologize for getting into a spitting match with the poster that distracted from what this site is all about.

I recommended that Scott attend EMU after researching HC Heath’s more than impressive coaching record. So glad he chose EMU. Very confident that at EMU, Scott’s game will go to a new level.

Best to the EMU bb program! Should be an exciting year.
