New Heath Transfer
Every offer, commit, transfer, etc. apparently gets his own thread: 04-cheers

https://twitter.com/JonRothstein/status/...66502?s=20

Grad, 1 year to play 1, SG. Played this past season for Portland State of the Big Sky. Previously one season at Temple.

https://verbalcommits.com/players/james-scott

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basket...ames-scott

Was a former Temple player. Ding, ding, ding.

Next thread? "New Heath Front Court Recruit" just don't know the names yet. We need front court players badly.

low shooting percentages and high turnover rate makes me think he's a bench guy.

led Portland St in scoring and minutes played. shooting % and assist-turnover % were consistent with the team's overall stats. Led Kennessaw St in scoring as a soph. Played 20 min a game as a jr at Temple. Considering MAC competition is somewhere between what Temple plays and Portland St/Kennesaw play I'd expect him to do pretty well in the MAC, although his career numbers say his efficiency isn't great. Also with veteran guys like this, motivation in your last year of college can lead to an exceptional year or kind of mailing it in if things aren't going well. I'd say heath got a big guard who can be a MAC starter. and bridge guy until he builds out his roster Now, he has to motivate and coach him to be at his best.

We do and we have several offers outstanding where the players have not made their choices yet.

So far if one follows the 'Heath lineage' will do well.

All that Heath hired have been coaches he has been associated in the past.

Transfers we've gotten have been associated with those assistant coaches Heath has hired.

Just keep following the bread crumbs, wherever they lead.

Agreed. At worst, he’s a gunner off the bench who can keep you in games or shoot you out of them. At best, he’s a motivated senior at his 4th school, with a point to prove, that Heath can turn into a legitimate scorer.

His numbers suggest it’s probably closer to the former, but that’s fine too. I think he and Kevin Rice will provide some quality depth and competition off the ball. I’m of the ilk that doesn’t mind a little irrational confidence, especially at our level, as long as they bust their ass defensively.

Scott’s freshman year at Kennesaw State he came off the bench and In his only start scored 33-points against Stetson. Playing his sophomore year, Scott scored 26-points against Butler, 22-points coming in the second half. He scored 20-points against NJIT in the second half. Against Texas Tech and Univ. Of Washington, he scored 19-points, against Florida State he scored 17-points. He averaged 17.3 points per game his sophomore year.

When he transferred from KSU, he was rated 7th best transfer in the nation, and drew offers from Virginia Tech,Maryland, Dayton, and Nevada, but chose Temple.

At Temple, when he played many minutes in conference play he shot and scored well. As he scored 25-points against UConn in a double overtime win, and 18 points against SMU. Finished conference play shooting 54.7 percent on two’s, the highest percentage for any guard in the conference.

Has a great first step and gets by defenders with ease. Can shoot well off his dribble from anywhere on the court. Has a high Bb IQ. Is terrific in the open court.

Outstanding EMU Asst.Coach Trice was one of his coaches at Temple.

At Portland State, he played PG and in his second start against Oregon State he led PSU from a 17-point deficit, made the Elite Eight in this year’s NCAA tournament, he led PSU from a PSU deficit as PSU outscored OSU 45-35 in a second half comeback that fell just short of winning the game. He scored 13-points on the second half that included four three-point plays.

He led PSU in scoring averaging 15.7 ppg in conference play, (high of 26-points against Weber State) and averaged shooting 35.7 percent on three’s. He also led PSU in total rebounds at 5.3 per game, including 1.7 offensive rebounds per game, 1.8 steals, 3.2 assists, and led team in number of foul shots. Shot poorly at the foul line, but shot at 80 percent at the foul line at KSU. He averaged 1.8 steals per game in conference play at PSU, the second best in conference play. He had an outstanding defensive rating of 95 points per 100 possessions.

As for turnovers, he didn’t start playing PG till four games into the season with no preseason preparation. Although his turnover rate of 3.1 per game was a little high in conference play, his turnovers were of such a nature that only 13-points were scored off his turnovers in conference play. His dribble was rarely stolen nor his passes intercepted that resulted fin easy hoops.

As a combo guard, Scott can play either PG, SG, or even SF. Fully expect that he will earn starting for EMU.

Best I not post here going forward but did want to share some info on James Scott.

Have enjoyed reading EMU’s fans insightful and respectful insights here, and look forward to following your takes on this up-coming season. EMU has hired an outstanding HC and look forward to his continuing to sign terrific recruits.

hey man thanks for the insight

Randle is at the top of my wish list. Loved what I saw from him in the state title game. We need that type of size and athleticism.

I like transfers who have played for a member of the coaching staff. Nice to know what you're getting.

Better than a one-hour zoom interview or the one hour interviews we may have had when we were hired.

Some video on Scott...
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HMIbrn1CgRo

Seems like a legitimate MAC starter. He is more of an SG than an SF. But I think he will end up being EMUs starting SF based on teams need and personnel. McBride (also legitimate MAC level starter) is too short for SF. Rice looks good on stats and video, but question mark on how he plays in D1.

Overall, we looking good now- just need to focus on some frontcourt additions as you guys are staying. at this point.

Man, it is so much easier to watch 'tape' on a D-I player than watch say an H.S. player from Iron Mountain and try to figure how he projects in D-I.

(P.S. I believe one of the Mr. Basketball finalists was from Iron Mountain).

EDIT: It is so. https://www.uppermichiganssource.com/202...asketball/

Interesting. On the surface, this guy just looks like an inefficient chucker. Is he super athletic? Is his defense strong? I’ll reserve judgement here until there’s more info.

Thanks for the info sir! Although I do wish you would stick around, I understand.

The conference statistical splits tell us that we may be getting a gem in Scott.

Can you tell us why he didn’t play more minutes at Temple?

RE: New Heath Transfer
Scott averaged but twenty minutes per game playing at Temple for two reasons.

One being misplaced favoritism as Scott transferred into a program that had two returning high volume shooters who shot 2’s at only 40 percent. Scott was relegated to coming off the bench, even though Scott shot 54.7 percent on 2’s in conference play.

The second being the HC only played small ball when Temple was being outscored. When he did play small ball Temple closed the scoring gap or went ahead. HC didn’t realize that Temple was simply a better small ball team. As a result Scott played far less than he should have and Temple lost games.

With Scott playing few minutes, Temple lost to conference opponents. SMU, HConn, and Tulane. In the three losses the two previously mentioned starters shot poorrly. .

In the seconding meetings, with Scott playing 26 minutes plus, Scott scored 22, 25. and 16-points respectively, and Temple won all three games. In the three games, Scott shot a blistering 76 percent (19-25) 19-25 on 2’s. Scott had also been told about a flaw in this jump shooting form and corrected it.

As Temple playing SMU a second time trailed SMU by 17 points at half-time playing big, and the deficit would have been larger but for Scott coming off the bench and shooting well.

The HC went small ball in the second half and Temple by playing a pressure defense overcame the deficit and beat SMU in overtime. Scott scored 22 points in the game.

Scott’s outstanding performances in these three games raised the performance of the two poor shooting starters as Scott dished out 12-assists, and the two starters shot well.

In the UConn game, Scott came off the bench in the first-half with Temple trailing by five points. Scott helped lead Temple to tying the game in regulation.

With less than 30-seconds left in overtime and Temple down by three points, a time-out was called.

Up to that point in the game, Scott was 9-11 shooting two’s and, 0-3 on three’s. In the huddle, the players implored the HC to have Scott take the final shot. The HC agreed.

On the ensuing play, the PG brought the ball across half-court and passed the ball to Scott who was stationed with his back to the basket guarded by two UConn players. With 25-seconds remaining, Scott did a fake upward movement, then dribbled and turned around to face the basket, raised off the floor with two defenders having their hands up, as he shot the ball.

Over 5,000 home fans held their breaths as they watched the ball make a high arching majestic arc before laser-like swishing thru the net. They then went bonkers applauding as Scott cooly retreated to get back on defense. Like it was just all part of a day’s work. The game went into double overtime, and Temple went on to win. Scott led all scorers with 25-points on 10-15 shooting, and holding James Boukright to scoring 16-points on 6-16 shooting. Bouknight expected to be drafted in the first-round of this year’s NBA draft.

After the game, players swarmed around him as they walked into locker room with him smiling.

At a later, press conference UConn’s HC Hurley when asked about Scott’s outstanding performance, described Scott as a “dangerous” player

UConn went on to beat Houston, the AAC’s conference champion.

Later, with Scott playing substantial minutes, Temple lost Wichita State by 3-points. Scott shot 7-7 on two’s. If you add in those made two’s to the other three previously mentioned games, Scott shot a whopping 81 percent (26-32) on two’s in 4 conference games.

Scott shot at far lower percentages when he played fewer minutes and took fewer shots, and was shuttled in an out of games that prevented him from finding a rhythm.

Former alumni bb players who watched Temple scrimmages said Scott was Temple’s best player. After watching team practice, Kentucky HC John Calipari singled out Scott and told him he loved his game. In interviews, Temple players said Scott was Temple’s toughest player to guard.

At Portland State, Scott shot 42.5 percent on three’s in 12 of PSU’s 14 conference games

If you want to see more highlights of Scott playing PG. go to Portland State men’s bb Twitter, scroll all the way down following his name and video clips.

EMU’s HC Heath told the press he was going to play an NBA offense which is up-tempo, spread the floor NBA offense (with pick and rolls, back-cuts, inside-out game, fast breaks, etc.), and a man to man defense.

By installing an NBA offensive and defensive system, such is going to be huge draw to EMU as most players want eventually to play pro ball. We’ve already seen overnight the huge and immediate draw of new recruits to EMU. As both HS and college transfers alike want to attend EMU because HC Heath just left the NBA ‘s G-league, where the team he coached won the G-league’s championship.

Although some fans may prefer traditional college ball. professional bb is a completely different game players are yearning to learn and play in as soon as possible.

Fans will come to love the increase in scoring that HC Heath swill install.

As for the EMU’s roster, it’s wiser to wait till the final roster is complete before projecting starters nor assigning positions as the NBA today mostly plays without set positions.

Something special taking place at EMU.
