Whitmer’s Approval Dips Below 50% as Scandals Mount
Quote:Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s (D) job approval dipped below 50 percent, according to a new poll.

Progress Michigan, a far-left advocacy group, asked 820 Michigan voters May 5-6, 2020 about Whitmer’s job performance and 49 percent said they approved, six percent said they “somewhat” disapproved, and 43 percent “strongly” disapproved.

Meanwhile, 51 percent said they approved of Whitmer’s handling of the coronavirus. Forty percent said they approved of how the legislature has handled the response, the legislative branch effectively shut out by Whitmer.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel (D) and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D) fared less favorably in the survey.

Forty-one percent of respondents approved of Nessel’s performance, while 45 percent saw Benson’s job positively.

Progress Michigan did not ask about Whitmer’s recent scandals, which included her reportedly traveling to Florida on a private jet days before telling Michigan residents not to, two of her top advisers traveling to Florida and Alabama for spring break despite the governor’s lecture to Michiganders not to, and a secret deal worth over $155,000 to the former Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director Robert Gordon.

Other findings of note include:

55 percent thought the 2020 presidential election results were “legitimate,” 37 percent did not

54 percent support “stricter voter ID laws,” 41 percent do not

President Joe Biden’s job approval matched Whitmer’s at 49 percent

31 percent said they “do not plan” to get a coronavirus vaccine which would complicate Whitmer’s strategy of 70 percent vaccination to fully reopen the state.

The poll had a partisan breakdown of 34 percent Democrats, 30 percent Republicans, and 37 percent independents.

Gretchen Whitmer Changes Story, Drops Original Claim She ‘Traveled at Her Own Expense’ on Private Jet

Quote:Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) again attempted to explain her secret Florida trip in March aboard a private jet and her story seemed to change Wednesday.

Via the original MIRS News report in April:

While Communications Director Tiffany Brown wouldn’t say where the Democratic governor traveled, a source tells MIRS that Whitmer’s father, Richard Whitmer, has a home in Florida.

“Her dad was fully vaccinated, and the governor is tested regularly and has never tested positive for COVID [coronavirus],” Brown told MIRS, noting the governor traveled at her own expense and that utilized no state resources. … (emphasis added)

Brown said Gov. Whitmer wasn’t on spring break but was assisting “her elderly father who is battling a chronic illness.”

“A brief trip,” she claimed during a Wednesday press conference. “It was not a vacation and it was not a gift,” a reference to a lobbying legal term.

“This flight was not a gift,” Whitmer reiterated moments later. “This flight was not paid for at taxpayer expense.”

It is not clear why she did not simply say she “traveled at her own expense,” as her office originally claimed.

Breitbart News asked Whitmer’s office why her story changed and if she could provide any evidence to indicate who paid for the private plane, but neither communications director Tiffany Brown nor press secretary Bobby Leddy would explain.

Whitmer’s secret Florida trip came just days before she urged Michiganders not to travel to the very same state. After that demand, two of her top aides, Chief Operations Officer Tricia Foster and Department of Health and Human Services Director Elizabeth Hertel went to Florida and Alabama respectively for spring break.

The governor’s claim she was tending to her ill father was possibly undermined when he was spotted shopping and driving in Lansing weeks later.

“Michiganders are tired of the growing stream of lies coming from Gov. Whitmer,” Republican Governors Association spokesman Chris Gustafson said in a statement.

“Whitmer’s refusal to disclose basic details about her vacation to Florida is simply more proof that she is unfit to lead and it is time to Fire the Damn Governor.”

RE: Whitmer’s Approval Dips Below 50% as Scandals Mount
Quote:Michigan’s Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer may soon be forced to turn over documents relating to her administration’s COVID-19 nursing home policy. On Thursday, the Michigan Senate Oversight Committee voted to subpoena nursing home records from the state’s health department, the Detroit News reported, in an effort to get a clearer picture of how Whitmer’s policies impacted the COVID-19 death rate in Michigan adult and long-term care facilities.

“Oversight Chairman Ed McBroom, R-Vulcan, said he had requested documents from the Department of Health and Human Services on March 2, but two months later, officials hadn’t released any records to him,” the Detroit News noted. “McBroom said he’s looking for communications among state health department employees about policies for nursing homes and other long-term care facilities during the coronavirus pandemic.”

The Whitmer administration reportedly had a policy similar to that of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who required that nursing and other adult and long-term care facilities accept patients recovering from COVID-19, even if those patients remained contagious or still tested positive for the virus. The policy in New York may have led to tens of thousands of coronavirus-related deaths.

Journalist Charlie LeDuff announced last month that he and others were “suing the state of Michigan to release information regarding Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive order that funneled nursing home residents hospitalized with COVID-19 back into nursing homes,” information, LeDuff claimed, Whitmer “is hiding from the public.”

“According to state data, 5,712 COVID-19 deaths in Michigan have been either residents or staff of long-term care facilities, equaling about 31% of the statewide virus-linked deaths,” the Detroit News reported, adding that the state had ordered “regional hubs” — nursing home specially equipped to handle returning patients who needed to be isolated — to operate during the pandemic to keep potentially contagious patients away from vulnerable nursing home residents.

Republicans had pushed for the governor to mandate COVID-19 patients be sent to separate facilities where there were no additional adults requiring care.

But the content of Whitmer’s COVID-19 orders are under seal, LeDuff noted in an op-ed for USA Today, because Michigan’s governor’s office is largely exempt from the Freedom of Information Act laws, and the state has been reticent to turn over the information voluntarily. What information they had, they told LeDuff and others, was off-limits because it would reveal private health data in violation of both state and federal law.

Michigan’s Attorney General, Dana Nessel, is a Whitmer ally, and despite evidence that New York’s similar policy caused perhaps thousands of deaths, refused to investigate Michigan’s COVID-19 nursing home edicts, according to the Detroit Free Press. Nessel claimed the request, which came from Republican lawmakers, did not show “any law has been violated.”

“I appreciate that you and your colleagues have policy disagreements with Governor Whitmer’s response to COVID-19. But an investigation by my office is not the mechanism to resolve those disagreements,” Nessel said in her response denying the request.

The vote Thursday compels the state’s health department to begin producing some of the estimated 55,000 individual documents on the issue within two weeks.

Its always a bad sign when your approval rating drops below the crater in your stomach.
