RE: Rice football recruiting - class of 2022
We're recruiting some other Ridge Point kids (as noted in other threads - BJ Emanuel the QB who is Bert's son, and DK Kalu, who is ND's son although he's class of 2023). Here's another Class of 2022 recruit we should be going after on the DL. He's another really good student.

Clayton Cherry, 6-0, 240 - just did 42 reps of 185 on the bench press to get first place overall in the lineman challenge. His twitter account shows the video from today.

New commit today is AJ Padgett, a 6-3 QB out of Frisco (Reedy HS). His offers aren't much yet (HBU and Incarnate Word), but Reedy plays in a super competitive district (Denton Ryan won the state 5A title last year and is preseason #1 in the 2021 polls).

And mods, can you maybe put a sticky next to this thread?

We've added a WR to the 2022 class. Braylen Walker (5-11, 170, 4.4 40 speed) will be a senior at College Prep in Lake Charles, LA, but he played his first three seasons of high school at Sulphur, LA. According to the article below, his only other offer at this point is Grambling State, but his three older brothers all have played college football (one brother Branden is at HBU, and older brothers Byron and Brian also played in the Southland Conference.

Added Cedeno to the list. Our first commit in awhile, but he's probably as good of an OL commit as we've had in several years.

ETA - thanks for pointing out I missed a commit from a couple of days ago. Dean Connors is a freshman RB at Riverside City College, a California Community College. He's a 2021 HS graduate from Murrieta Valley, CA, so it's very possible he'll have 4 full years of eligibility.

Actually, didn't I see a tweet and Roost article regarding an elite JUCO RB who just committed this past week?

Cedeno is the Owls' second commitment this week, following RB Dean Connors on Thursday. #FlightSchool22 continues to grow. #GoOwls

We have a bunch of guys on campus this weekend - some who are already committed, but some who have not yet. One grad transfer coming in for a visit is kicker Tim Horn of Washington - he only attempted a few XP's in his Washington career, but has done kickoffs for them for several years and seems to have a good leg in terms of touchbacks.

Looks like he went to the Punahou School in Hawaii which, in addition to being President Obama's and Hiram Bingham's (one of the inspirations for the Indiana Jones character) alma mater, has a tradition of sending athletes to the Summer Olympics. 14 Olympic medals among its alumni and at least one alumnus has been on every U.S. Summer Olympics team since 1968.

According to this article, other Punahou-alum kickers are the Houston Texans' Ka’imi Fairbairn (UCLA), Army's Quinn Maretski, and Jet Toner, Stanford's kicker last year.

Pretty quiet on the recruiting front, even though I thought we had a big weekend of visits this past weekend? The only news I see online is one of our existing commits (Reece Sylvester, a safety from Baytown Sterling) has decommitted.

Looks like he has recently been offered by HBU and University of South Dakota.

If we're losing guys to those programs, we're in big, big trouble. But maybe there's something we don't know-grade issue or something else.

Actually looking through twitter today on my day off, I do see that we received a commitment from long snapper Landon Mitchell (from Due West, SC - he needs to get an NIL with Du West Foundation!). I actually think we desperately need a long snapper so I'm all for giving a scholarship to this pretty important position.

Horn committed. Tomorrow is early signing day - I suspect we'll see some other new names emerge. It does appear that the coaches are much more active in the transfer portal than years past (I see we've offered some FBS players in the past few days).

And quarterbacks.

Look, there's a reason why lots of these transfers are transferring--they weren't playing where they were. And there's a reason why they weren't playing.
