Marshall Men's Soccer 2021 National Champs
Akron won it all in 2010. The Zips were also runners-up in in 2009 and 2018.

Now our former rival has reached the peak of collegiate athletics in a sport...

A sport that our own beloved University does not sponsor...makes you wonder.

If we invested into a men's soccer program, we could have a legitimate chance to bring home a national title back to the Glass City!!

RE: Marshall Men's Soccer 2021 National Champs
While Akron has a fair decent number of Ohioans on their rosters and Marshal a few near locals, looks like the path to an NC lies through Germany, Brazil, and a few assorted countries. I'm not sure what about the Marshall coach screamed NC possible. He was an assistant coach on the Michigan team that lost to Akron in 2018. Other than that, he seemed a marginal player and a marginal coach.

Regardless an NC be in sights, having a good soccer programs seems to me a good idea for an international university.

Coach Chris Grassie is far from marginal as a coach. In my opinion Coach Grassie is the best DI Men's Soccer Coach in the nation.

The Grassie Coaching File
University of Charleston HC for 6 years
WVIAC/MEC Coach of the Year 4 times
99-20-8 Record
6 WVIAC/MEC Titles
1 Sweet 16
2 Elite 8
1 Final 4
2 Title Games
2 DII National Coach of the Year awards

Marshall University (4th year)
CUSA Coach of the Year 2 times
46-24-11 (30-5-6 in the last 2 years)
2 CUSA Ttiles
20 Ranked Wins (Beat #1 Clemson on PKs)
2 NCAAs
1 Sweet 16
1 College Cup National Championship
15 straight weeks in the Top 25 (Currently #10, Highest Rank #8) (Post College Cup Final Ranked #1 in both the United Coaches and Top Drawer Soccer Poll)

Coach Grassie was on the Michigan staff from 2007-2011, so he was on the staff in 2010, not 2018. Coach Grassie is 42, has been in the US since he was 17 and those are the only 4 years he has spent working outside of West Virginia.

Marshall took down some College Soccer Royalty to win.
Marshall's March To The National Title
#23 Fordham- Undefeated coming into the NCAAs -- Marshall 2-1 in OT, Golden Goal by Milo Yosef at the 96:41 mark of the first OT

#16 and unseeded North Carolina- UNC had made the College Cup semis the last 3 of 4 years -- Marshall 1-0, Goal by Jamil Roberts at the 30:22 mark in the 2nd period
#3 and 3 seed Indiana- Indiana has the most NCAA wins with 95 and 2nd most titles with 8 -- Marshall 1-0, Golden Goal by Jamil Roberts at the 98:41 mark of the first OT

Clemson - 2 time National Champions (32 NCAAs, Titles 1984, 1987)
Georgetown - 1 National Champions (10 NCAAs, Defending National Champs, Title 2019)
North Carolina - 2 time National Champions (26 NCAAs, College Cup Simis 3 of the last 4 years, Title 2001, 2011)
Iniana - 8 time National Champions (44 NCAAs, 21 College Cup semis, 16 College Cup Finals, Titles 1982, 1983, 1988, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2012)

Marshall Wins The 2020 Men's College Cup National Championship

And this happened just a few hours ago:
Marshall BOG Approves New 5 Year Contract for Coach Chris Grassie

For those of you who don't bother to read Coach Grassie was already getting a competitive salary at 120K. Average DI men's soccer coach makes just under 50K.

New Contract:
1,878,750 over 5 years
or
375,750 per year

In soccer, are DII programs not far removed from DI? Reading that of course I realize he was top of D2. Why the move to Marshal? The money offered? How good was the Marshal program before he came?

Basically two reasons he took the Marshall job. He has said he needed a new challenge. Of the 12 conference titles he competed for at Charleston (regular season and conference), he won 11 of them - finishing 2nd place regular season one year. The other factor was Marshall had recently opened a new $8 million soccer dedicated facility, and he was asked in the press conference after the title game, and he said "I was there in Charleston watching that thing go up and thinking 'you play some good soccer there'."

First, thanks for reminding me that Toledo always struggled to properly give Marshall L's. But to answer the question specifically, Marshall failed to qualify for the 8 team conference tournament it hosted when there were 9 teams in the league before his arrival. He had them basically .500 in year 1, Top 10 nationally in year 3, and national champs in year 4.

I truly believe coaching and recruiting is the same at every level. You just have to learn to adapt at what ever level you are on. If you can't adapt then that is when you fail. Most coaches who have success at the NAIA/DII/DIII level or even the IAA level and fail at the IA level it isn't because they forgot how to coach. They fail because they forgot to or juat failed to adapt to there new situation.

Coach Grassie has said over the last 4 years he took the Marshall job because he felt he wasn't growing anymore at UC and that he wanted a new challenge. Plus he said he knew he could do it at the IA level. He has said if it wasn't for that he was fine with staying the UC coach. He loves the area and is married to a Cross Lanes WV girl.

In short, from the Herdster's replies I'd say "yes" wouldn't you? Long shot but obviously it began when they took a chance on soccer and built the facility. Be an interesting fly on the wall to know if someone at Marshal had talked with that coach about the possibility of moving BEFORE finalizing plans for the facility.

Having connections in a lot of fertile overseas development leagues sure would seem to be key starting a program in ANY underdeveloped University sport. Soccer might not be the only possibility.

Hoops Family Field opened in 2013. It was unveiled in the spring of 2011 as the next project in a capital campaign for new facilities that included the IPF, Sports Medicine, Academic Center and HOF.

Coach Grassie became the Charleston HC in 2011, so anything to do with him becoming coach took place well after Marshall was to build Hoops Family Field.

Soccer was almost cut at Marshall in 2003. And played on a field pushed up against Joan C Edwards Stadium from 1992-2013. Sam Hood Field may have had 100 temp seats for games. Mike Hamrick the AD took a gamble on building an 8.3 million dollar soccer complex in 2011 and not without its critics from Marshall fans not understanding why that money wasn't put in football or basketball. It opened in 2013 and in 8 years produced a National Championship.

Do you get much in the way of attendance?

Great point. I'm sure there are plenty of our international students who would be thrilled to attend an intense men's futbol match at Hotmer Field.

Hoops Family Field holds just over 1000 at 1006. In 2019 for regular games there was maybe 500-750 at games. The last home game of the year saw a contest between #15 Kentucky vs #20 Marshall that drew 2,032 of standing room only. There was people standing all around the stadium. Three weeks later Marshall played in and hosted their first ever NCAA Tournament game against WVU where 2,126 seen Marshall beat WVU 2-1 and advance to the Sweet 16.

There has already been multiple calls to the ADs office to inquire about season tickets. As of right now both men's and women's soccer is covered under the olympic sports book. A book you can get for 150 dollars a year that will get you into anything but football, both men's and women's basketball and baseball. I assume that in the coming weeks men's soccer will be taken out and regular season tickets will be sold.
