UB got themselves a head football coach
Maurice "Mo" Linguist

Most recently the co-defensive coordinator at the University of Michigan.

Some good info about his background here. Sounds like a good one. We're Baaack!

What a week for UB, was it an emotional roller coaster?

Has experience as a DB coach at Buffalo. 2012 & 2013. I think it's important MAC schools hire coaches w/ ties to the MAC. So that makes me think it's a decent pick right off the bat.

I think Buffalo is trying to find another Fleck (young and a great recruiter).

Big difference here is that he comes with ties into the department already. While the AD has changed most of the staff in Alumni Arena knows coach Mo.

Considering the circumstances I think it's a much better hire than I feared it may have been.

An apparent Home Run hire! Mo has electrified my hometown of Ann Arbor with his energy, much like PJ did in Kalamazoo. Considering also that Lance hardly left the cupboard bare of talent and the guy has program history, this is an AD's dream. Bull, one could expect a max of two fabulous seasons before Buffalo sends yet another coach to the P5. Congrats, you have a great program.

This next year may be very rough unless all the portal guys come back.

* We lost two OL to graduation and two to the portal..
* We lost a DL to graduation and two to the portal..

Already three of the six who entered the portal have decided to stay at Buffalo (but officially none of the linemen).

Then there is the matter of replacing virtually the whole staff, 120 days before the season. We now have a coach, oc, and dc. We have four coaches that Lance did not take with him still on staff (no idea if they stay).

Really I would call 6 wins this year a major accomplishment for Linguist but... If the stars line up right with the portal and the hires, I could see 8-10 and pushing for the east.

The thing about Mo is we do not know what kind of a HC he is going to be. He could be great, he could be meh. He's never been in the big chair before.

But, again, if the stars line up, and UB is really good the next 2-3 seasons I expect him to be hired away. He moves around *a lot* and Buffalo has went from "dead end" to "launching pad" over the past dozen years or so between football and hoops.

Hired our OC Shane Montgomery away today....many aren't upset to see him go as he had a propensity to get extremely pass happy in tight games. Guy certainly knows the MAC well.

Not thrilled to hear that, UB has had a solid running team identity for the past 15 years (minus the Tyree Jackson years).

You’ll be fine running the ball, he’s been very run heavy in his 2 years of calling plays at JMU.

(2021) passes 183 rushes 393 [72% run]
(2019) passes 401 rushes 782 [66% run]

He'll run the ball, but abandon it at head scratching times. Perfect example was last week when down by 3. We ripped 4-5 consecutive runs that netted about 40 yards and had us on the opponents 30. We start passing, take a couple sacks to push us outside FG range and lose by 3.

That being said, he has forgotten more about FB than I will ever know. Take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Sorry but your perception does not match reality. They gained 11 yards on the ground that possession on 11 plays, 14 yards on 4 carries by the RBs and -3 on the 4 QB plays. What was working that drive was the quick passes as the D was on their heels, they hit for 9 yards, 10 yards, 15 yards and a Pass Interference call while also grinding out over 6 minutes of clock on what they hoped was the game winning drive. They were losing and trying to get deep enough to not have to kick into the wind with a kicker that doesn’t have the range while also working the clock and bring out of TOs. The D was stacking the box and forcing you to go elsewhere, that a D1 QB made poor decisions including eating a sack and being pushed out of FG range isn’t on the OC.

You are correct. I mixed it up with the previous drive. Nonetheless, we were averaging 6.5 ypc over the last 2 drives and really only getting stuffed once before calling pass plays on 8 of our final 9 plays. Certainly, some of those pass plays were down and distance calls after taking sacks.

And some would say the running on that possession was not wise, they were into the 4th quarter and down 11 and couldn’t afford to chew up the clock but took the runs because the D was sitting back on the pass. And the runs worked until they sprung that 34 yard pass for a TD. So hitting them with the run game to open up the air worked which is why you saw it on their final drive.

RE: UB got themselves a head football coach
Montgomery returns to the MAC, interesting. In some alternate universe where our admin support for football didn't nosedive in the mid-2000s he may have turned out fine for Miami, but it's been nearly two decades since then or his time as our OC during the Big Ben years. Best of luck to him, hope his tenure is better than our last ex-head coach to return to the conference (Treadwell at Kent State).
