That info is correct. Happened late last year. I’m surprised we kept it under wraps so well.

I mean, with the exception of Football and Basketball which may or may not be on track depending on who is posting, ODU is not bad athletically. Soccer teams do pretty well usually, baseball is having a great year, Field Hockey had a good year, both Tennis teams are killing it, and we had a much better than expected debut season of volleyball. You can faulty him for the JJ hire if you wish, but all in all we are not in a bad place across the atheltics division

ODU standards. Financials are in the sewer, football is has been one of the worst teams in FBS over the last 5 years... so bad we opted out of an entire season and basketball is in purgatory, but hey, soccer, baseball, and tennis aren't bad. Lifetime contract!

We didn't opt out of a season of football because we're bad, and to suggest so is pretty disingenuous.

Do you think we would have opted out if we were expected to win CUSA?

It was really nice of JBrod to get his buddy a few more years locked up before the new President took over.

Gotta agree. I think we opted out for Covid, but the fact that we were likely going to struggle made it a lot easier to make that decision. I think Im ok with a small 3 year extension for Wood. That will show us if Rhane and DMJ are good hires. I dont think he warrants a pay bump though. In fact, Id think he should be on the hot seat. If we've made the NCAA in mens and womens hoops and been to another bowl game by the time his contract is up again, then by all means give him a raise then. If none of those things have happened, then it may be time for a change in 3 years.

I'm more concerned honestly that we get out of this CUSA problem than I am about the short-term performance of the teams. Look, I supported the move at the time and we all make mistakes. In hindsight, that was a mistake. Once we joined, nothing worked out the way it was supposed to and it became an anchor around our finances. The focus needs to be a solution and if he can't find or execute a solution, we need someone here that can. The only thing he seems to do well is raising money. Yes, that is important in the short run, but our athletic department is not in a good position right now.

There's not a lot an AD can do on the conference affiliation front except be ready when things start shifting. It seems there was some smoke to the A10 rumors a few months ago but that fizzled out. It shows that we're not sitting on our ass doing nothing though. Our finances are not in such a bad shape that we can't hold out for a few years and see what shakes out. Unless we want to retreat of course. I'm sure the CAA, Big South or SoCon would take us tomorrow but that's not the direction we should be moving.

RE: Wood Extended Through 2024
Wood doesn't operate in a vacuum.
Decisions he makes are subject to "influence" from the Office of the President, the Board of Visitors, and ODAF - and of course the budgetary considerations of a non private institution.

During the WS era, there have been two (IMO) obvious and glaring issues.
The first being Karen Barefoot. That "mistake" was resolved fairly quickly. Nikki McCray was an excellent hire as a replacement. We shall see re Milton-Jones.
The second was the the time of retention of Bobby Wilder. That was almost entirely out of Dr Selig's hands. Indeed my understanding is that WS wanted him gone far sooner.

As noted above, the state of non revenue sports is very good.

What many here on this board consider a disaster is the tenure of Jeff Jones.
However, the office of the President, and the BOV might not see it that way. Consider;
He has a winning (.645 record) in his time here. In eight seasons he has four post season appearances. He has had only one losing season.
The above stats are not likely to move the BOV or the Office of the President into supporting a change, especially considering budgetary implications.

As far as the Conference move, WS did not operate in a vacuum, and in no way was he the final "decider".

Given the above, the WS extension should be no surprise.

FYI, if anyone is interested in the approval process of Ricky Rahne, this link is interesting and enlightening.

RE: Wood Extended Through 2024
If you don't want to hear about wrestling, just skip to the next post.

That being said.

Selig's contract listed Title IX compliance as one of his job responsibilities.

He failed so badly at that, he had to cut a sport. Title IX has been on the books for decades. When you do something departmentally that creates a Title IX problem, that's not the law's fault - that's YOUR fault. This was all put into motion months BEFORE the pandemic, so even him citing the pandemic as a rationale is bull$hit and everyone and their mother knows it. He's turned us into Eastern Michigan. That's what we are now athletically. Directional U.

To cut wrestling and dig himself out of the Title IX hole he created, he hired his buddy (Sander, former AD at ETSU and VCU) as a consultant and someone who never worked at a school with intercollegiate wrestling. Sander couldn't actually get paid through ODU despite months of back-and-forth over paperwork, so paid Sander's son's private LLC got paid for the consult in DECEMBER (after my FOIA inquiry to ETSU) and all the while, instructing Sander exactly how to cut wrestling and set up "stipulations" to apply to soccer and baseball to make it look like they were eyeing one of three sports for possible elimination.

His management of the move to FBS football and shift to Conference USA was so woeful, it shows he doesn't have the chops to run an actual D1 athletic department in this climate, not here or any place for that matter, even the freaking Apprentice School.

Almost everything he's done has smelled of cronyism. The best hire was Nikki, who got out of dodge as soon as a better gig opened. I'm also not the only donor/alum who has bolted on account of his mere arrogant, antagonistic presence.

Looks like I know how I can spend my contribution funds through at least 2024 ... somewhere else.

Depends on your definition of postseason. Does anyone actually consider the CBI or whatever that Vegas thing was a legit postseason appearance? The Dance and the NIT are it (and have always been it) from where I sit.
