Fantasy!

Of Course! But It makes sense for WVA. Two more desertions from the Uoftexas conference makes the bigxi the little 8 and puts them behind the American and the PAC in the pecking order. Especially if Ok and OKst joined the PAC. Nothing would please me more than really frosting Texas; unless it was frosting OofT knoxville.

I'm sure the $30 million/year pay cut makes perfect sense.

What if ESPN decides that the addition of WV, Boise, and BYU makes us a POWER league, worthy of $25M per team per year? Would a $15M cut be worth it for them to get more regional with at least their divisional conference mates? Is there ANY amount of cut that would make up for getting out of their ridiculous island situation. Not saying it has a snowball's chance, just interested in this dynamic.

Maybe it takes us from an $8 million league to a $10 million league. It would for sure make the league worthy of better bowl tie ins, but the cartel would never give in.

We would then be in the same situation that the Big 12 was in when expansion was considered. The middle tier and bottom tier of the league would take a big hit exposure wise. Right now our tv setup is something like this.

ABC/CBS/Fox
- The occasional game, only the top teams get a game or two a year

ESPN
- GREAT setup, especially the weeknight games, with captive audiences that get good ratings

ESPN2
- Still decent ratings, but not nearly as good as ESPN

ESPN News/ESPN News/CBS Sports
- Horrible ratings, many games with less than 300K viewers

Right now, if you are Memphis, Cincinnati, UCF and to a lesser extent, Navy and Houston, you get the pick of the best times and networks. The top 3 lately have been Memphis, UCF and Cincinnati. We will get all the games on the major networks, a high majority of the ESPN games and the majority of the ESPN2 games. The rest of the league will fight over ESPN and ESPN2 games where they play one of the top 5. After that it's obscurity on the bottom networks, or even worse, not having your games televised on any of them.

The question is this. Is it worth the extra money for all of us to take in teams that are going to "steal" games from us that are on the major and better networks? Is it worth the extra money to get bumped from ESPN2 to ESPN News?, or to lose the ABC/CBS game that will go to a hotter team?

Then of course, we aren't like Alabama, Oklahoma or Clemson. You can add anyone to their league and it won't matter. Adding a couple of teams that could beat you (especially when you are on the road) and wreck your NY6 bid would be devastating.

This is a moot point, if the cartel decides that we are worthy of a lot more attractive bowl bids, but there is no way that they will. IF we go from $8 million to $25 million, we absolutely do it; but there is no way Boise, BYU and San Diego State get us more than a couple of million a year.

IMO, that is what the league has to consider before expanding.

No, because then the Big 12 just raids the AAC and takes Cincy and one or two other teams...

The problem is Houston. Last time, the Big 12 had settled on us, Cincinnati and probably UCF. NOBODY wanted Houston, including the Texas schools, which was going to be a big headache politically for them. The timing last time was bad because Houston was good and Cincinnati was bad.

The best thing that could happen would be for Houston to continue to suck in football, with their program being run like a circus run by Fertitta. That will MAYBE justify the Texas members snubbing their noses at Houston without suffering too much politically.

If they expand and take two schools, it will be us and Cincinnati.

One other thing to consider is the deal Navy has with CBS/CBS Sports Network to televise their football games. At least I think that is still in play for them. I could be working off of old info though....

I don't like them...but they have been the AAC gold standard for a good while.
Their last 3 coaches have been home-run hires for them.

The reason why we would be ahead of them, is because we are right in the middle of the conference geographically. On a map, the conference would look like a 12-14 limbed octopus, with us right in the middle.

Since 2014, Memphis is the only team in the AAC with 40 Conference wins. We've played in the most AAC Championship games and have the best record against other G5 teams. Memphis leads UCF in overall wins in that time 64-56. I am not sold on UCF being the gold standard of anything, much less the AAC.

Not sure you can say their last 3 coaches have been home runs either. Frost was an unproven commodity as only been an OC for 2 seasons that wasn't thought of as a major hire. Heupel, might be the biggest "name", took Frost's championship team and after his first good season, the best he finished was 3rd. Nobody knows how Gus will do. But, if you were thinking O'Leary, the reason UCF hired him because he was available after the Notre Dame scandal.

Pot and Kettle are not applicable in this situation. More like Player F takes 100 3 pointers and makes 9 being called a 3 point specialist as opposed to Player AAA that takes 100 3 pointers misses some but is known for 2 shots: the game winning 3 pointer that was waived off because time expired and another one to tie the game and send it to OT not counting because another offensive player fouled the opponent before the shot was taken.

If they expand and take two schools, it will be us and Cincinnati.

it's hard to make an argument against UCF tho.
I don't like them...but they have been the AAC gold standard for a good while.
Their last 3 coaches have been home-run hires for them.

Frost at UCF would have been unstoppable had he stayed.
The move to Nebraska, while understood was doomed to failure before he began.
When Nebraska moved to the Big 10, they got away from their rivals Oklahoma, Colorado, etc..rivalries that had been decades in making.
They went from being a bowl lock damn near every season...to being a also-ran in the Big 10...for the payday.
Under Frost... UCF was a recognized national title winner. One computer ranked them as co-champs with Alabama that season. Sorry, but that counts.
There is no reason to think that a UCF squad led by him would not continue to have done well.
Heupel was a good hire for UCF, and he got out while the getting was good. I guess he knew a down season or two was coming.
A lot of his former UCF players have spoke up and expressed their dislike for him as a coach after he left for Tennessee...so again...got out while the getting was good.
I think UCF will be very good again under Malzahn.
He did about as well as anyone could expect at a school like Auburn.
Alabama is the state behemoth, with 5* starters, and 4* backups.
At a place like UCF, with their exposure and recruiting... he will kill it there.
He has made it clear this is his last coaching stop. I think they may take a step back on defense as they get used to a new system, but his offense will be a juggernaut...much like ours had to be in Norvell's time with us.

UCF is putting their money where their mouth is...and Memphis needs to be just as aggressive, if we want to be seen as a candidate for future expansion.

We need to look at FULL MEMBERS ONLY.

In the P5 conferences, you do not see football-only schools.

I personally would rather add Appalachian St.

The last time the Big XII considered expansion we were the first team eliminated.

They had their eyes on BYU, but could not accept them due to the scandal having to do with their honor rule. The Conference was right in the middle of the Baylor scandal and could not justify adding BYU at that time.

Homosexual rights groups at all the Big XII school were very outspoken against adding BYU

Yes, they had their eyes on a school in the middle of nowhere. Also, Rice was ahead of us. 03-lmfao01-wingedeagle

Really the Baylor (largest Baptist college in the nation) and TCU have homosexual rights groups that were protesting BYU? 03-lmfao

No, you don’t. Through decades of expansion, they’ve gobbled up most every all-sports school that can move the needle. This is why the AAC must think outside the box.

If we added App St we would effectively be adding a "football-only" school. And one with very limited growth upside (and zero revenue upside) at that.

RE: New Conference Members?
Wasn't this idea about a West-Coast expansion something that was batted around back when we were in C-USA?

If it didn't make sense then, why would it make sense now?
