Would you rather see an expanded playoff or a major realignment?
A simple question for everyone: which would you rather see, an expanded playoff or major conference realignment?

Both.

What I want to see is one of P5 dissolves or merges with another P5 conference, and the playoff expands to 4-1-3.

Tired of realignment. Also think the powers that be need to sort out other issues before thinking about reshuffling the deck chairs again.

I'd like to see an 8 team playoff, essentially incentivize OU and Texas to stay put for a few more years. Hope the P5 stays the same. More interested in the P12 getting it's media package and operations in better order to maximize their product and compete again regularly for National titles.

Expanded playoff 100%

I'm not sure why anyone would want major realignment unless they're a G5 team being promoted to P5.

I think an expanded playoff would eliminate the need for any major realignment. So expanded playoff for me

Expanded playoff. But only 6 or 8. No G5 autobid

You’re the type of guy that would rank a 13-0 AAC team #9 in that scenario behind a 9-3 BXII team.

Yeah, should be 6 with the six spot being a wildcard and that can go to the highest rated G-5 or independent.

RE: Would you rather see an expanded playoff or a major realignment?
I said both. It is easier to justify expanding the playoffs, especially after NIL and if the removal of the cap on stipends happens, should some privates opt out of big time football and spend their money on basketball.

If we simply expand the playoffs that does nothing to address the economic inequity between existing P5 conferences and between the existing G5 conferences. If the bottom third of Division I opts not to pay players and drops down the playoff situation could become much clearer by moving to P3 adjusted for economic equity, and a G2 for the same reasons.

To expand the playoffs without addressing the issue of equity is to institutionalize the haves and have nots and lock them in stone. While 2 conferences may like that in the end the if equity isn't addressed then guess where all of the at large bids will go? So just expanding the playoffs will tend to make the SEC and Big 10 richer and concretize the revenue gaps.

If you moved Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, and Texas Tech to the PAC you create a large multi time zone conference worth a substantial boost for the content and market reach.

If Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Duke, Wake Forest and B.C. decided to put their focus in hoops and either de-emphasized football or eliminated it then it would open enough slots to do the following:

Pitt, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, and Miami to the Big 10.

Louisville, Clemson, Florida State, N.C. State, Virginia Tech, T.C.U. and W.V.U. to the SEC.

The Big 10 picks up significant markets reaching into the recruit rich states of Georgia and Florida.

The SEC picks up significant markets and consolidates leverage in Florida and South Carolina and picks up the DFW metro.

Neither gain significant value.

That's 3 twenty team conferences that should be paid close enough to keep equity among the P schools.

The AAC should merge with the most profitable of the Eastern G5 and a new G5 should form with the best of the west.

Then in an 8 team playoff you have 2 G5 champs, 3 P5 champs, and 3 likely P5 at large.

Nobody hogs the best recruiting ground which is why SEC dominance is being established as they are in Florida, Georgia, Texas and Louisiana which are 4 of the top 5 recruiting grounds in terms of providing players to the NFL.

Now the PAC has better access to Texas with California being the other top 5 recruiting area and the Big 10 has access to the deep South.

That's as equitable as it gets.

Big 10:
Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina, Virginia
Notre Dame, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse
Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue
Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin

SEC:
Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, South Carolina
Kentucky, Louisville, N.C. State, Virginia Tech, West Virginia
Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Tennessee
Arkansas, Louisiana State, Missouri, Texas Christian, Texas A&M

PAC 20:
Baylor, Colorado, Texas, Texas Tech, Utah
Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State
Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Washington, Washington State
Arizona, Arizona State, California, California Los Angeles, Southern Cal

Then your 2 new G5's of 12 to 16 members each depending on commitment

As an SEC fan it is not what I would want, but for the sake of the future of college football something has to level things out. Simply expanding the playoffs does nothing in reality as funding and access to recruits are where the disparity resides.

Both.. want expanded playoffs AND smaller conferences/divisions.. 12 should be the absolute max, but 10 is the perfect number..9 conf games, 3 OOC games

fight me.

The point of a spot for the G5 would be to throw a bone to the lesser-resourced schools of FBS. Notre Dame is certainly not lesser-resourced and should not be eligible for the 6th spot in this scenario.

RE: Would you rather see an expanded playoff or a major realignment?
Even as someone that loves writing about conference realignment, I definitely have no personal need for a major realignment as a fan. It is a fascinating topic for my brain and I’ll talk about it all day, but I don’t really want it in my heart at this point.

On the other hand, I won’t rest until there’s an expanded playoff. There’s nothing that I personally want more in sports than at least an 8-team college football playoff with P5 auto-bids. The postseason will feel incomplete every single year for me until that happens.

I say both P5 go to 14 and G5 go to 12. Playoff is 8 or 12. Semi finals at new year 6 bowls if 8 team playoff then quarterfinals week before semi's. No autobids but G5 gets a spot if ranked in the top 15.

Expanded playoff.

I don't want to see a major realignment, because something is always damaged in the chase for more money. Realignments are never pursued "to fix things that bug some fans about the current way things are done", they are always pursued to try to grow the cash flows coming into the biggest programs.

While I want to see a G5 make it to the playoffs, autobid isn't the answer. What if the best G5 has two losses and simply isn't in the same league as the other playoff contenders. We don't need an embarrassing game, and face it, that G5 team will be put up against the number one team in the nation. I want it to be an eight team playoff with an autobid to a G5 only if they are undefeated and have achieved this with a predetermined strength of schedule.

I think an autobid is fine. P5s get blown out in most of the CFP games as well.

And what if the P12 champ is 9-4 or 10-3, after the championship game. That is just as likely than the best G5 being 11-2. As long as champs have an auto bid, there will be years where you get some one who doesn't belong. Bottom line is with 2 at large, you can't say the best 3 to 5 teams are not in the 8.

expand playoff to 16, every conference gets autobids, 6 at larges. Play on higher seeds campus until semi's, then play it out like we do now.

Expanded playoff.

Major realignment was fun back in 2010. It's stale now, and it destroys CFB even when it's "fun".
