Off topic - - from the lying, underhanded Biden-Harris spokesperson, so I keep it short (or at least shorter than I usually do) - - but one of the most fascinating books I've read in the past few years is "Sapiens" by an Israeli professor, Yuval Harari. The book covers a lot of ground, but one of the questions addressed was how Homo Sapiens, a much smaller and more fragile species, was able to compete with and ultimately subdue the much stronger, heartier Neanderthal.

It's well worth reading to find out.

I've read different things on this including that Neanderthals just bred into modern humans and that they didnt have an immune response to a disease that wiped them out or rapid environmental shift. Probably all of the above

Okay, I’ll spoil it - - mostly because I can’t help myself.

According to Prof. Harari, what Sapiens had that Neanderthals lacked was the ability to understand fiction - - i.e., an imagination.

Unlike other species - - such as birds, fish and livestock - - the humanoid forms generally do not congregate in herds. Most monkey and ape families number roughly 50 before they start breaking up into subgroups. The largest chimpanzee colony recorded was about 150 in number. There is just too much pressure among the dominant males to enable a band to stay intact at larger numbers. A single dominant male cannot maintain authority over large groups, and there is nothing else that keeps the group functioning in a cooperative fashion.

Sapiens are different. They can invent and believe in fictions that allow for larger group cohesion. Think of the conch shell in “Lord of the Flies”. There was nothing inherent about the shell that invested it with the power to let the holder be the one to speak uninterrupted, other than the belief of gathering rest of the boys in this fictional power of the shell. Sapiens were able to invest their tribal leaders with fictional authority over larger numbers than the Neanderthals were able to do.

So in a battle between a tribe of 100 Sapiens versus 100 Neanderthals, it would be a rout in favor of the latter. But in a battle between 500 Sapiens and 100 Neanderthals, the Sapiens win.

That’s just one of many very interesting observations from that book.
