It called the BONUS. It should be a bonus for getting fouled, not a potential penalty that could favor your opponent's strategy. I want the game rules to motivate great defense, great offense, good rebounding, and good shooting; not intentional and lazy fouls and gaming the system.

yeah, that'll never happen. Make your free throws and you don't have an issue.

Over time, it became clear that having a rule that favored the trailing team made for exciting finishes, and exciting finishes pay the bills. In this case, it's not so much a rule that favors the trailing team, but rather a convenient and deliberate ignoring of a rule that was on the books for a long time - the intentional foul rule. We can rationalize it by saying that the defensive player is making a legitimate play on the ball but everybody knows that these fouls are in fact intentional, except late in the game. Anybody who doubts that need only to watch the losing coaches frantically yelling at their players to foul and coaching them on who to foul during timeouts.

Why do we accept this now as "part of the game"? See the part about paying the bills.

but could easily go to the psuedo quarters where fouls just reset at the 10 minute mark.
