Heflin to Packers
Naperville Central

Emmanuel Rugamba, CB Ball State

Age: 23 (Born March 3rd, 1998)
Height: 5'11 1/4"
Weight: 198 pounds
Pretty decent agility if they want him to play in the slot. His explosion is pretty underwhelming and he is listed as having run a 4.74 40.

Surprised he wasn’t drafted. He should be able to stick at Washington.

They have Peyton Barber, Lamar Miller, Antonio Gibson, JD McKissic & Jonathan Williams. Gibson & McKissic are likely locks. Miller, if he has anything left in the tank, is not going to play special teams at this stage of his career. So if he can show any value on specials then he would really give himself a good shot at making it.

Apparently Heflin going to Iowa didn't help him stand out and get drafted.

Antonio Nunn is so good. He always destroyed us.

Not a lot of Huskies getting looks.

Honestly, in my opinion of course, this is the perfect example of how Carey recruited vs how Hammock does.

We already have some kids Hammock has brought in that you can say have a legit chance of being drafted - not just a tryout thing.

Lafayette stands out right away. A host of the kids on the DLine could have a legit chance if they can produce. There are WRs who can seriously play.

It’s interesting- it isn’t to say Carey’s guys couldn’t win in the MAC, because they can and did. But Hammock is going for guys he thinks can compete on a national level.

It’s going to be fun to watch the difference in the next season or so.

I really don’t think this is a Carey thing—-it’s truly a MAC thing and if Hammock is good enough to recruit multiple draft picks (to be seen) that would be great. The MAC is pretty consistently from 6-8 picks from ALL teams combined getting drafted. There were 11 in 2017 but I’m have no idea if any of them in the bottom half of the draft are playing.

And, it’s not like Kill or Doreen (or Novak) cranked them out either—going back almost 15 years:

07–Wolfe (no NFL impact)
09-English (injures really made him a bust in the 1st round)
12-Harnish (better story being Mr. Irrelevant than any impact)
14-Bishop
15-Brown
17-Kenny (making a living out of it)
19-Sutton (hurt in camp and out really quick)

We’ve had more non drafted players do fine than drafted players.

The MAC is the MAC—every once in a while an impact player comes through, but not very often for a D1 conference.

You're missing quite a few there:

Darrel Hill
Christian Blake
Tommy Lee Lewis
Doug Free
Max Sharping
Ryan Diem
Michael Turner

and the most glaring Jimmy "Freakin" Ward

gotcha I was looking at Players in the NFL not just drafted players. I missed Justin McCareins, Rashaan Melvin and Sam Hurd on my list as well, a few of those are also going back.

We have had more NFL players in the last 20 years than I thought though.

Also, I think that Greg Barksdale was hired by an NFL team to launder players’ jock straps. An important position. But, even for that, he was an UDFA.

—-and Jimmy was my favorite—-sorry—-just flat out missed and Scharping went right over my head.

To be more succinct—-I don’t think anyone recruits NFL draft picks TO the MAC—-those players are made in the MAC. The MAC is going to win very few recruiting battles even against most lower echelon P5 schools.

It’s been 523 days since NIU last won a football game. I’m gonna hold off on saying Hammock’s piling up NFL talent.

The only MAC coach I can recall actually getting NFL talent through great recruiting was Fleck. And he was recruiting over and above the MAC level. Hammock is still only 3rd or 4th best in MAC recruiting. So he will just have to get lucky like all the previous coaches.
