RIP Courtney Hall '90
I have received word that one of Rice's greats, Courtney Hall '90, passed away unexpectedly yesterday, apparently of a heart condition.

Graduating from high school as a National Merit semifinalist at age 16, Courtney was an all-conference center at Rice (starting every one of Rice's 44 games during his four years) and an All-Pro center for the San Diego Chargers, with whom he played in Super Bowl XXIX in 1995.

Since his playing days he has had an illustrious career in finance and public service. I had the great honor of serving with Courtney on the Association of Rice Alumni board of directors in the early 2000s (when he was also earning a joint JD/MBA from U of Chicago), and have been privileged to call him a friend. Among his many other services to Rice, he was recently elected to the Board of Trustees; his term would have begun July 1.

Tragic news. He was probably the best offensive lineman Rice has ever produced, and also one of the smartest and most successful post-professionals we've ever had as well. Just terrible news.

A huge loss to the Rice community — and the world.

No! I remember getting his autograph on the field after the Texas Tech game in 1988. He was devastated by the loss, but he put on a smile for me and made it memorable. I remember my dad taking note of how crushed he looked as he walked off the field. I'll never forget it. RIP Courtney Hall.

What a sad day. One of the best ever. And to think that he played the whole Jerry Berndt era, and still had such a phenomenal Rice and NFL career

RE: RIP Courtney Hall '90
I still can't entirely process this, as I had been texting with Courtney just a few days ago. He was the paradigm scholar-athlete, and an absolute gem of a person. My kids are devastated, as he was like an uncle to them, around them their entire lives. He even helped move my daughter into her dorm at Columbia, and did a zoom call with my son before his first varsity start at center. I was fortunate enough to be one of his guests at his induction to the SWC Hall of Fame in November 2019, and I recorded his "fireside chat" (apologies for the sound quality, but it was the best I could do with a phone). It's not too long--only 6 minutes--and definitely worth watching. It captures his warmth and humor, and his pride in "Rice Fight Never Die". He leaves an awfully big hole, and a lasting legacy of excellence in all things, on and off the field. https://vimeo.com/543888138

Was thinking the exact same thing. RIP Courtney; you'll be missed.
